Considered the first American sport with roots tracing back to the 1400s, lacrosse is an exciting game and among the fastest growing in the United States. Each player car-ries a netted stick (the crosse) that is utilized to pass and catch a hard rubber ball. The object of the game is to propel the ball into the oppos-ing team’s goal, therefore scoring one point. Like football or basket-ball, four quarters are played.

You see the game on the col-legiate level pop up on your TV screen on ESPN now and then. The Kenosha Raptors have brought local awareness of the sport through their involvement at the high school level. Although immensely popular on the East Coast and other scattered pockets, lacrosse is far from mainstream nation-wide. But, that is changing.

In Wisconsin, the sport has bal-looned from 473 lacrosse players in 2004 to more than 3,600 currently. The 2011 season saw 47 high school teams compete statewide and another 25 at

the youth level. Next year, the state is expecting that number to grow substantially.

Growth leads to grantsIt is this growth which allowed

the Raptors to gain two major na-tional grants from U.S. Lacrosse on Nov. 12 at the Wisconsin Fast Break Initiative in Waunakee. The presen-tation was made during a Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) training in which Raptors coaches took part. The PCA included lacrosse techniques and how to coach in a positive way. Coaches also are subjected to a national background check.

“U.S. Lacrosse sees Wiscon-sin as a growing lacrosse market and we were the one club in the state which they recognized as the fastest growing,” explained Rob Wikstrom, president of the Raptors. “We went from one team a year ago to six this year and they couldn’t believe we expanded by that much so quickly.”

More than 90 kids are involved in the indoor league at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha. The league is broken into three sessions. The first is currently taking place every Mon-day night at the new state-of-the-art facility. The second one begins Dec.

12 and anyone interested should go to the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha, 1715 52nd Street, prior to that date and sign up.

“The Boys & Girls Club’s facility has made a world of difference for us,” said Wikstrom. “It allows us to play into the winter.”

One of the grants is an equipment grant which goes toward 20 sets of boys lacrosse equipment and 20 sets of girls lacrosse equipment. An additional grant is for AED (automated external defibrillator) equip-ment and training for all of the Raptors’ coaches.

Wikstrom has laid out a plan for the grant money.

“We plan to rent out the lacrosse equipment at a low cost,” he said. “If we charge a small fee each season and put that money aside, hope-fully when we need new equipment, we can buy it on

our own and just keep that process going. As for the AED money, as a new club we would never have been able to afford that.”

Wikstrom said the grants allow those who just want to try the sport a chance to do so without the financial commitment. In addition, the Raptors will work with low income families who can demon-strate a need.

“The main thing is to get the kids involved,” added Wikstrom.

Lacrosse is not an elitist or expensive sport to play, which many parents find attractive. On the youth and adult levels, clubs and leagues have popped up in the Milwaukee area and in northeast Illinois. Its growth is continuing at a high clip, and now the Raptors have grant money to reinforce that growth in Kenosha.Thomas Larson

As Christian Life School works toward building its soccer program, its girls soccer players are working on their skills at the Boys & Girls Club of Kenosha. Eagles One defeated Eagles Two, 7-0. The teams played against each other with-out any coaching. It was a great environment for the play-ers to work on their skills and have fun at the same time in a low pressure situation.
