area

plateauA large, high level area of land

ridgeA line of hills or mountains

Coastal plainA low lying coastal plain that makes up the

eastern most part of Virginia

Fall lineThe area where rivers form waterfalls or

rapids because of a general drop in land’s elevation

Tidewater RegionA flat stretch of land bordering the Atlantic

Ocean

Hampton Roads

Wide harbor at the mouth of the James River on the Chesapeake Bay

Piedmont RegionLong sloping plateau that stretches from the

fall line to the Blue Ridge Mountains

RichmondIndependent city and Virginia's capital

Blue Ridge RegionOld rounded mountains and source of many

rivers.

Allegheny MountainsPart of the Appalachians that runs from

Pennsylvania to Virginia and West Virginia.

Valley and Ridge RegionAn area of western Virginia that includes the

Alleghany Mountains and Great Valley

Cumberland GapA pass though the Appalachian Mountains

where Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee meet.

Daniel BooneFrontier explorer and hunter who helped

blaze a trail across the Appalachians through the Cumberland Gap.

Appalachian PlateauAn elevated woodlands, hollows and gorges

in the far southwestern part of Virginia.
