when it comes to rental accommodations, it’s important to be as diligent as possible to make sure you have a good experience from start to finish.
If possible, speak to current tenants and ask about their experience. If you’re shown a model, ask to view the actual suite where you’ll be living so you can check out the view and get a sense of exactly what you’re getting beforehand so there are no surprises. While you’re renting, know your rights. Tenants are not responsible for normal wear and tear on the premises during the tenancy. The landlord is responsible for general upkeep, including wear and tear. You should be asked to fill out an Inspection Worksheet when you move in, which the landlord will sign. This is an important document to keep on hand for moving day. Consider taking photographs if there are damaged areas, or bring a video camera if you have one and tape the inspection. A little diligence now ensures peace of mind for later.

you’ve got the reno bug. I know, it sounds like fun. A new bathroom vanity, hand-scraped exotic hardwood flooring. But you can’t. You rent. You’re stuck reading all of these great décor magazines with no way to express
your inner interior decorator!
I’ve got two things to say:
1) You’ll never truly appreciate how lucky you are that you don’t have to live through a renovation. It’s hard to believe, but the experience of dirt, dust and disruption really does take away from the enjoyment of the final outcome.
2) Think outside the big beige box. Sure, you may not be able to rip up floors – but there are reams of products out there that will do the trick. Floating floors: they click together and are temporary – if you move you can even take them with you to your new home and reconfigure them there! Or go with a rug or hallway runner. Since they’re not permanent you can be more daring, go with colour, pattern or texture that can easily be changed as something new in your décor mag strikes a chord.
You can’t tear out that bathroom vanity, but you can spend that extra money in changing up the hardware and on really amazing accessories. If you need more storage, find a chrome trolley, or brass bar cart – the ones on casters are totally on trend. They offer great storage capacity and can be adapted for use in the office, bedroom or kitchen when you want to change things up.

It’s sometimes what drives me to do a blog with a specific focus. A while back I got a slew of letters asking about the ‘Save-10 Per Cent-Rule.’ Most recently, I’ve had a barrage of request from people who are very concerned about fraud. If this has been on your mind, here are some I do.

If you’re a sucker, you deserve to lose your money. Sounds harsh. Really? Have you ever got one of those emails promising you thousands of dollars if you take advantage of a new business opportunity, fabulous investment with amazing returns, or for your help is moving money from another country? Just how gullible are you?
Work-from-home scams are another way some people are ambushed. With people looking for ways to make more money, the temptation to send money to someone with a promise of getting paid work you can do at home is sometimes too much to resist. One of the most successful lures you into becoming a “representative” or “collection agent” for a company. The fraudsters have you collect and deposit cheques into your bank account and then wire the cash to Head Office while keeping your commission for yourself. Sadly, the cheques turn out to be counterfeit and the bank comes after you for the cash because you are responsible for any deposits to your bank account.
I’m also pretty careful when I shop online. I choose to use reputable retailers and I have a credit card with a very low balance that I use only for online purchases. I change this card every year or so. A credit card can actually help to protect you since if you have a dispute with a seller, you can ask your credit card company for a “chargeback” – read “don’t pay this seller” – if your purchase was not as advertised.

I periodically go through my paperwork and files and get rid of anything I no longer need. I don’t just dump ‘em. I shred ‘em. This applies to financial statements, invoices, anything with personal information that someone could use to hurt me. Since “dumpster-diving” has become a favourite way for fraudsters to find information they can use to apply for loans or credit cards in your someone else’s name, I bought myself a cross-shredder and make my financial stuff into confetti.
I never write my PINs down. Yeah, I’m old, but I can still commit a few number to memory. And I would’’t dream of sharing my PIN with anyone. When choosing a PIN don’t make it too obvious: a phone number, address, birth date. And periodically I change my PINs. If you’re having trouble remembering your multitude of PINs and passwords, take a page from my girlfriend: she carries a telephone book around with her and has her PINs and passwords concealed amongst all the other names and numbers.
I never give out info on the phone. I’ve had people call me to “verify” stuff, and ask me for the information. I point out that I’m happy to verify what they already know, but I’m not telling them squat. Your bank will never call you at home requesting personal information. If someone does, rest assured that it is a scam and should be reported to both your bank and the Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or info@phonebusters.com.

any information they believe is wrong. If you have
identified an error, you can approach Canada’s
two major credit reporting agencies, Equifax
Canada and TransUnion Canada. FCAC also
suggests that you:
• support your case by gathering receipts,

pork MEDALLIoNS in Mushroom Marsala Cream Sauce
1 pork tenderloin, cut into 1-inch thick medallions and lightly pounded
1/2 tsp coarse salt
1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
3 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp unsalted butter
3 medium shallots, finely diced
12 oz cremini or button mushrooms, thinly sliced
1 tbsp flour or cornstarch
1/2 cup dry Marsala or Sherry
1 cup chicken broth
1 tsp Dijon mustard
3 tbsp heavy cream
1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley
INgrEDIENtS Serves 2
DIrEctIoNS
Season the pork medallions on both sides with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter in a large non-stick sauté pan over high heat. When the butter is melted and foaming, add half of the medallions and sear until they’re nicely browned, about two to three minutes per side. The pork should be golden brown and slightly firm to the touch. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining pork.
Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the pan. Add the shallots and sauté for about 30 seconds, using a wooden spoon to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Add the mushrooms, reduce the heat to medium-high and sauté until all of the liquid has evaporated and the mushrooms are golden, about three minutes. Season with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, sprinkle with the flour and add the sherry. Once the wine has almost completely evaporated, add the chicken broth and reduce by half, about three minutes. Stir in the mustard, cream and parsley, return the pork and any accumulated juices to the pan, and cook, flipping the medallions once, until they’re firm to the touch and still a little pink in the middle, about three to four minutes.
To serve, place the medallions on a serving platter and spoon over the mushroom marsala sauce with a final garnish of chopped parsley for show. I like to serve this dish with buttered noodles or sautéed new potatoes.

Chopped shallots and sliced mushrooms are sautéed until golden, then sprinkled with a little flour and jigger of sherry to thicken and flavour the sauce. Chicken stock is added and cooked until reduced by half, then the cream, Dijon mustard and parsley are stirred in along with the browned and juicy pork medallions. Served in a large serving bowl with a flurry of chopped parsley, this dish is an easy, elegant and delicious meal, perfect for a mid-week dinner but also impressive enough for serving family and friends.
