Great Plains College show-cases state-of-the-art heavy equipment simulators
Great Plains College showcased four brand-new CAT simulators to industry personnel and prospective heavy equip-ment operators at a Come & Go Open House earlier this month. The simulators will be used in the upcoming Heavy Equipment Opera-tor program that starts June 9 at Swift Current Campus. Attendees were intro-duced to the benefits of the technology as a training tool for new employees and
as a method to refresh and enhance the technical skills of current heavy equip-ment operators. “The key ingredients to the motion experience are our proprietary software and physics engineering. Our program-ming team works closely with motion specialists to provide very specific in-formation to the motion platform,” ex-plains Annette Bailey Marketing Strat-egist, Simformation/CSE Software. “In turn the simulated machine’s physics respond and react realistically to the environment, maneuvers and terrain interaction.”

The six-week, Heavy Equip-ment Operator training pro-gram consists of a combination of simulator, hands-on field training and classroom theory. The simulators are housed in mobile custom-fitted trailers to ensure the college has the abil-ity to effectively and efficiently service the industry’s training requirements. “Through our partnership with Kram-er Ltd. and the tremendous support of Western Economic Diversification Canada, I am very excited that the col-lege has permanently acquired these state-of-the-art mobile simulators,” says Darlene Anton, Great Plains Col-lege Program Coordinator. “They are cutting-edge technology and emergent in the world of heavy equipment train-ing,” she added. During his 25 years of industry ex-perience Lionel Nordmarken, heavy equipment operator, has seen his share of workplace close-calls and mishaps. “The use of simulators allows me to put students into challenging circumstanc-es in controlled situations,” he replied. “There are huge risks, liabilities and
costs associated with putting an inex-perienced driver on equipment which costs upwards of $500,000,” he added. Thanks to the addition of an educa-tional grant of $1,000 alongside feder-al and industry funding, Great Plains College has greatly reduced the tuition associated with the Heavy Equipment Operator program. “At other post-secondary institutions in the province, the tuition for this pro-gram averages from $10,000-$13,000,” says Anton. “Through partnerships and government support, Great Plains College is able to offer this program for $7,500 plus GST and applicable book and student fees. It’s a pretty good in-vestment for those starting up their ca-reer or wanting to tweak their skills.” The Swift Current Heavy Equipment Operator training program has recent-ly been adjusted to begin on June 9, 2014. Students who apply by May 30, 2014, are eligible for the $1,000 educa-tional grant.

On this day in 1945, both Great Britain and the United States celebrate Victory in Europe Day. Cities in both nations, as well as formerly occu-pied cities in Western Europe, put out flags and banners, rejoicing in the defeat of the Nazi war machine.
The eighth of May spelled the day when German troops throughout Europe finally laid down their arms: In Prague, Germans surrendered to their Soviet antagonists, after the latter had lost more than 8,000 soldiers, and the Germans considerably more; in Copenhagen and Oslo; at Karlshorst, near Berlin; in northern Latvia; on the Channel Island of Sark--the German surren-der was realized in a final cease-fire. More sur-render documents were signed in Berlin and in eastern Germany.
The main concern of many German soldiers was to elude the grasp of Soviet forces, to keep from being taken prisoner. About 1 million Germans attempted a mass exodus to the West when the fighting in Czechoslovakia ended, but were stopped by the Russians and taken captive. The Russians took approximately 2 million prisoners in the period just before and after the German surrender.
Meanwhile, more than 13,000 Brit-ish POWs were released and sent back to Great Britain.
Pockets of German-Soviet con-frontation would continue into the next day. On May 9, the Soviets would lose 600 more soldiers in Silesia before the Germans finally surrendered. Consequently, V-E Day was not celebrated until the ninth in Moscow, with a radio broadcast salute from Stalin himself: “The age-long struggle of the Slav nations...has ended in victory. Your courage has defeated the Nazis. The war is over.”

What do you think?1) Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Mon-day, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?
2)This is an unusual paragraph. I’m curious how quickly you can find out what is so unusual about it? It looks so plain you would think nothing was wrong with it! In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out! Try to do so without any coach-ing!
3)You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?If you overtake the last person, then you are...?
4) (in your head!) Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000. Now add 30. Add another 1000. Now add 20. Now add another 1000. Now add 10. What is the total?
5) Mary’s father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
Answers:
1.) Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.
2.) The letter “e”, which is the most common letter in the English language, does not appear once in the long paragraph
3.) If you answer that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second! If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?!
4.) Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100. Don’t believe it? Check with your calculator!
5.) Nunu? NO! Of course not. The fifth daughter is Mary. Read the question again.
