discovery of the Americas. Many people, including those whose ancestors were indigenous to North America, found the celebration ironic and troubling because it represented history as seen from only a European perspective. In these images, Beam uses histor-ic figures such as Christ, Riel, Sitting Bull, Einstein, Lincoln, Kennedy, Co-lumbus, juxtaposed with numerous historical references and symbols, to make art work that represents a con-trasting, yet balanced, assembly of he-roes from different cultures. “My works are like little puzzles, interesting little games,” said Beam. “I play a game of dreaming ourselves as each other. In this we find out that we’re all basically human.” Beam is one of Canada’s most in-fluential and significant artists and The Columbus project is considered among his most significant works. Carl Beam and The Columbus Suite” will be on display at the Grand Coteau Centre until the end of the month. The Columbus Suite is from the per-manent collection of the Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery, curated by Cu-ratorial Director, Heather Smith. The exhibition is travelling the province as part of the Organization of Saskatche-wan Arts Council’s Arts on the Move program.

A little bit of service and preventative main-tenance can ensure that your lawnmower, string trimmer and other implements are run-ning efficiently and won’t break down before you place them back into storage for the winter. Such machines are typically gasoline powered, so they should be serviced using the following simple steps:1.) remove the gasoline. Leftover gasoline from the previous year can become stale, chok-ing the carburetor and causing rust.2.) disconnect the spark plug. This disables the engine, making it safer to perform service on the machine.3.) remove the blade. This step applies mainly to lawnmowers, though other equipment like edgers also have blades. While this piece is re-moved, sharpen it using a metal file.4.) drain the oil. This step doesn’t apply to string trimmers and other handheld lawn machines, which typically have two-cycle en-gines and run on a mixture of gasoline and oil. Four-cycle engines, common on lawnmowers, will need to be drained of oil.5.) Clean the equipment. Use a putty knife and wire brush to knock off accumulated grass and mud, then reattach the blade if you removed one earlier.6.) Fill the oil tank. If you’re servicing a four-cycle engine, refill the oil tank with fresh oil.7.) replace the air filter. This improves airflow to the engine, allowing it to run more smoothly.8.) replace the spark plug. Although your old spark plug may still work properly, installing a new one is a cheap and easy way to ensure op-timal performance.

with females, you might find that some-one opposes you. Be polite, but remem-ber: You don’t have to give in.

LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)Relations with authority figures, espe-

cially parents, are tested today. Why notconsider this an opportunity to practicepatience? After all, patience is a wonder-ful, rare virtue.

This day in History - may 8th, 1963Sean Connery stars in his first Bond movie, Dr. No

On this day in 1963, with the release of Dr. No, moviegoers get their first look--down the barrel of a gun--at the super-spy James Bond (codename: 007), the immortal character created by Ian Fleming in his now-famous series of novels and portrayed onscreen by the relatively unknown Scottish actor Sean Connery. Connery had acted in repertory theater and television and scored some bit parts in films before landing his first significant role, opposite Lana Turner in Another Time, Another Place (1958). Bigger roles followed, notably in Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure (1959). Harold Saltzman and Albert “Cubby” Broccoli, the producers of Dr. No, had other actors in mind to play Bond, including Cary Grant and James Mason; Fleming himself preferred another leading candidate, David Niven. After winning the role, however, Connery swiftly made it his own. Costarring Ursula Andress, Joseph Wiseman and Jack Lord, Dr. No sends Bond, a British Secret Service agent, to Jamaica to investigate the murders of a fellow agent and his secretary. There, he is forced to confront the villain-ous Chinese scientist Dr. No (Wiseman) with the help of a bikini-clad seashell collector, Honey Ryder (Andress) and a CIA agent (Lord). Dr. No established many signature elements of the Bond film series, including its distinctive theme song, fast-paced action sequences, sexy “Bond girls”--both good and bad, Bond’s fondness for vodka martinis “shaken, not stirred” and his introduc-tion of himself as “Bond. James Bond.” Connery went on to appear in six more Bond films, including From Rus-sia With Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and (after a 10-year hiatus) Never Say Never Again (1983). The title of the last film, an “unofficial” remake of Thunderball, was a self-mocking reference to Connery’s past statements that he had finished with the Bond franchise. Though he was a major box-office attraction after the overwhelming success of Goldfinger, Connery had report-edly already tired of playing Bond by the time he made Thunderball (1965). Afraid of being pinned down to his famous alter ego, he began seeking out different and more challenging roles, scoring hits with such films as The Man Who Would Be King (1975). With acclaimed turns in The Name of the Rose (1986) and The Untouchables (1987), for which he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Connery moved fully out of the Bond spotlight and emerged one of Hollywood’s most venerable leading men. Meanwhile, other actors kept the Bond franchise going over the years, with varying degrees of success. George Lazenby played Bond in only one film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969), while Roger Moore had a well-received run of seven films, beginning with Live and Let Die (1973) and ending with A View to a Kill (1985). After two films starring Timothy Dalton (1987’s The Living Daylights and 1989’s Licence to Kill), Pierce Brosnan was credited with breathing new life into the franchise with his debonair portrayal of Bond in four films: GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002). Daniel Craig, a brawnier Bond, made his debut in the hit Casino Royale (2006) and continued in Quantum of Solace (2008).

When the Smith family moved into their new house, a visiting grandparent asked five-year-old Tommy how he liked the new place.“It’s great,” he said. “I have my own room Alex has his own room, and Jamie has her own room. But poor mom is still in with dad.”

For all of you with teenagers or who had teenagers, you may want to know why they really have a lot in common with cats:1. Neither teenagers nor cats turn their heads when you call them by name.2. No matter what you do for them, it is not enough. Indeed, all humane efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.3. You rarely see a cat walking outside of the house with an adult human be-ing, and it can be safely said that no teenager in his or her right mind wants to be seen in public with his or her parents.4. Cats and teenagers can lie on the living-room sofa for hours on end with-out moving, barely breathing.5. Cats have nine lives. Teenagers carry on as if they did.

High School Track & Field athletes prepare

for a great season!

A man walks into his local butcher’s shop and com-plains about the leg of lamb that he had previous-ly bought, when I cooked it the joint had shrunk so much it went from 12 inches long to only 4-inches. The butcher said to the man that’s funny my wife knit-ted me a sweater and when she washed it, it was also 4-inches in length, what’s your sweater got to do with my leg of lamb asked the man, the butcher replied well they both must have come from the same sheep.

DID YOU KNOW?MininG Saskatchewan is the world’s largest producer of pot-ash, a mineral critical to the fertilizer that global crops need. Our mines account for roughly 30 per cent of world potash production, and potash companies have announced $13.2 billion worth of expansions to their existing mines by 2020. Our province is the second largest uranium produc-er in the world. The Athabasca Basin, in northern Saskatchewan, contains the largest, high-grade uranium deposits in the world.Saskatchewan is Canada’s third largest coal producer. Saskatchewan’s value of mineral sales was approxi-mately $8.1 billion in 2011.
