She will begin her work at the Clinic on August 15th.• Long time Shaunavon physician Dr. Pierre Louwrens will also be providing his medical expertise at the Clinic, as of August 15th. He will be continuing to provide clinical services at Climax and Shaunavon. Dr. Louwrens has been in-strumental in maintaining consistent medical services in the communities, and the region looks forward to his ongoing contributions at the Primary Health Care Clinic. The addition of the above three phy-sicians will complement the presence of Dr. Ignacio Barretto at the Clinic. In addition, several of the health region’s Nurse Practitioners (NP) have devel-oped a collective schedule that will see one of these NPs providing services at the Clinic until a permanent NP can be recruited to the community. Appointments to see the Primary Health Care Clinic’s nurse practitioner or one of the physicians can be made by calling 306-297-2644. When report-ing to the Clinic for appointments, all patients are requested to register at the Hospital’s main entrance registration desk. For patients wanting to make an ap-pointment with Dr. Louwrens prior to August 15th, they are encouraged to contact the Shaunavon Medical Clinic at 306-297-2625. Following August 15th, appointments for Dr. Louwrens can be made by contacting 306-297-2644. Grant Browne, the Medical Affairs Coordinator for the Cypress Health Re-gion, has been involved in physician re-cruitment efforts for the community of Shaunavon for some time and has ded-icated much effort to achieve additional physician resources for the patients of the area. “We welcome these physicians to the primary health care clinic team in Shaunavon and are excited that our recruitment efforts have been success-ful,” said Browne. “The combination of

physicians with experience in the com-munity and one that is new to the com-munity will be very beneficial for overall patient care and collegial support for all of them.” The health region is also pleased to announce that Dr. Kevin Wasko will be providing medical services every Wednesday at the primary health care clinic in Eastend’s Wolf Willow Health Centre. Currently living in Swift Cur-rent , Dr. Wasko is a recent graduate of the University of Saskatchewan’s Family Physician Residency Program. “Due to the fact that Dr. Wasko was raised in the Eastend area, it is tremen-dous to see that he would dedicate some time each week to provide his clinical expertise to the primary health care clinic at Wolf Willow,” added Browne. “This is another great example of the dedication of our physicians to ensuring that the needs of the region’s communi-ties and patients are given the attention they require.” Dr. Wasko’s first day in Eastend will be August 7th and appointments can be scheduled with him by contacting the Health Centre registration desk at 306-295-3534. He will join his medical col-leagues from Maple Creek who provide physician services at the Clinic, along with temporary part-time assistance from the region’s Nurse Practitioner team, in offering a team approach to primary health care programs and ser-vices. ingredients:

2 tbsp - butter1 ½ tsp - cinnamon

1 cup - raisins1 ¾ cup - maple syrup

6 cups cubed, - white or whole wheat bread

8 eggs¼ cup - orange juice

2 tsp - orange zest

Method:

Heat butter, cinnamon, rai-sins and maple syrup in a skillet until boiling. Whisk

1971: Bluenose II donated to Nova Scotia

It’s the most easily recognized ship in Canada but until a few days ago there was talk that it would be scrapped. For-tunately, the Bluenose II -- built from the same plans as the famous racing schooner Bluenose -- has found a new owner: the government of Nova Scotia. Rather than sell the celebrat-ed ship to foreign interests, the Oland family sells the ship to the province for the remarkable price of one Canadian dollar. (Or, more fittingly, ten dimes!)

• The original Bluenose was built in Lunenburg, N.S., and launched on March 26, 1921. It was designed to race for the International Fisherman’s Trophy, but was also a working Grand Banks fishing vessel. In an 18-year racing career the Bluenose never lost the trophy, beating numerous Canadian and American ships.• In 1955 both the Bluenose and its captain, J. Angus Walters, were inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame.

• During the Second World War, steel fishing trawlers re-placed wooden schooners. In 1942 the Bluenose was sold to a Havana, Cuba, company to carry freight in the West Indies. It was wrecked on a reef and sank off the coast of Haiti on Jan. 28, 1946.

• The Bluenose was immortalized on the Canadian 10-cent coin in 1937. But the artist simply referred to the ship as a schooner, and the Royal Canadian Mint did not officially rec-ognize the schooner as the Bluenose until March 15, 2002.• The Bluenose II was built from the same plans as the Blue-nose, in the same shipyard and by some of the same men. The rigging and sail plan are also identical.

• Both the Bluenose and the Bluenose II are actually black in colour. The origin of the name is the subject of much debate. Some say it came from the blue-skinned potatoes its crewmen carried fromNova Scotia to Boston. One story claims the namecame from blue dye left on the noses of fishermen wearing homemade woollen mittens.• The Bluenose II now represents Nova Scotia asa sailing goodwill ambassador. Its home port isLunenburg, N.S.

siMPLE stEPs EnsuRE sAFE suMMER ACtivity Summer is a busy time for many with barbeques, camping, water activities, and socializing on the agenda. The Cypress Health Region is reminding the public to exercise a few simple precautions to ensure that the summer months are as enjoy-able as possible. Picnics, barbeques, and potlucks are abundant during the summer months and are a great way to celebrate the summer holidays. Taking care of FOOD PREPARATION is an important step to staying healthy during these times. Before eating, preparing, or handling foods, wash your hands with soap and water and use paper towels. Keeping food either hot or cold right up to the moment of cooking and/or serving prevents bacterial growth that can cause illness. It is recommended that meat, poultry, and seafood all be cooked to appropriate temperatures prior to consumption. Partial precooking is not recom-mended. If you are using a barbeque to cooks foods it is particularly important to ensure that foods taken directly from a freezer are thoroughly cooked both inside and outside; the appearance of cooked meat on the outside does not necessarily equal cooked meat on the inside. The use of hand wear and properutensils around a barbeque are important to prevent burns from hot temperatures. Other helpful FOOD HANDLING TIPS include washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before cutting and refrigerate if not being eaten right away. Ensure all plates, cutting boards, and utensils are washed, rinsed, and sanitized (where possi-ble) before use, especially when in contact with raw meats. On short trips it is recommended that you bring your own bottled or purified water. If purified water is not available heat is still the safest, most effective method to purifying contaminated water. In a heat-safe container bring water up to the boiling point and maintain a rolling boil for at least one minute, then allow it cool. Only treated, purified, decontaminated water should be used for drinking, brush-ing teeth, and washing fruits and vegetables. On hot days where UV INDExES approach dangerous levels it is wise to be mindful of the potential dangers that the sun’s rays cause. Wearing sunscreen, sun-glasses, staying hydrated, and taking shelter in shade or cooled indoor environ-ments will help protect you from sunburn and heat stroke. Prolonged sun exposure on seemingly unharmful cloudy days can result in dangerous exposure to UV rays. Children are particularly susceptible and require maximum protection. Intense sun exposure during early childhood appears to increase one’s risk of health con-sequences later in life. With warm weather the likelihood of SEVERE WEATHER increases. During a summer prairie storm it is best to take shelter indoors. When indoors and light-ning is present do not use corded telephones and avoid items that conduct electric-ity such as appliances, bathtubs, radiators, and metal pipes. If you are in a vehicle and approach severe weather stay inside the vehicle and park in a location void of trees and power lines. Do not touch any metal. If you are caught outdoors during a storm and no immediate shelter is available look for low lying areas that are clear from streams in the event of flash flood-ing. The key to severe storms in summer is to minimize your contact with the ground and make yourself a small target to reduce the risk of being electrocuted by a ground charge. TORNADOES can be common in Saskatchewan and have potential to cause widespread destruction. Signs of a potential tornado include lightning, extremely dark clouds, and a rumbling or whistling sound that is caused by flying debris. If you suspect a tornado go to the basement or take shelter in a small interior ground floor such as a bathroom, staying away from windows, doors, and outside walls. If you are in a vehicle during a tornado do not stay in the vehicle. Take cover by crouching in a low-lying area such as a ditch and be prepared to move in the case of flooding. Do not take shelter under a bridge or overpass. Winds can accelerate under an overpass and cause injury or death from flying debris. If you have a MEDICAL EMERGENCY PLEASE DIAL 9-1-1 immediately to access an ambulance. For non-urgent medical advice call HEALTHLINE AT 8-1-1; a trained, registered nurse is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The Cypress Health Region encourages everyone to have a safe and enjoyablesummer.
