...Your.Daily.Fix.................CANADA AND SASKATCHEWAN IN-VEST $65 MILLION FOR FARM AND RANCH WATER INFRASTRUCTURE PROGRAMgov.ca - Support for Long-term Water Infra-structure to Benefit Producers and Grow the Industry Today, Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart announced $65 mil-lion over five years for the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program (FRWIP). “Our government is focused on helping create jobs, growth, and long-term prosperi-ty for Saskatchewan’s hard-working produc-ers,” said Ritz. “I am pleased that Saskatch-
ewan producers will continue to have access to this program as another tool in their tool-box to help build their operations and our overall economy. Building farm and ranch water infrastructure is an important way to increase producer profitability and secure a safe future for provincial water supplies and our producers’ livelihoods.” “Establishing a secure source of water is crucial to the long-term success of Saskatch-ewan’s farmers and ranchers,” Stewart said. “This investment in long-term water infra-structure such as wells, dugouts, pipelines and irrigation infill, is essential to the future growth of Saskatchewan’s agriculture indus-try and our economy.”

FRWIP, which was first introduced in 2008, helps farmers, ranchers, First Nation bands, rural municipalities and irrigation districts develop long-term, reliable sources of water and the related infrastructure necessary to support their agriculture businesses. Since 2008, more than $49 million in federal-provincial funding has been invest-ed through FRWIP to help establish nearly 5,500 wells, dugouts and pipelines. In addi-tion, since 2007, the federal and provincial governments have provided $20 million for infill funding which has increased irrigation capacity by nearly 12,000 acres. The program has now been enhanced to include a new component for Agricultural Business Development for intensive live-stock and horticultural operations. As well, value-added agricultural businesses and non-district irrigators are now eligible for funding. “SARM appreciates the continuation of this investment in rural Saskatchewan,” SARM President David Marit said. “We look forward to the development of many more community wells, on-farm wells and dugouts that will ensure a reliable source of water for the agriculture industry for years to come.” “FRWIP has been a valuable program for livestock producers in Saskatchewan,” Sas-katchewan Stock Growers President Harold Martens said. “Many wells, dugouts and pipelines have been developed and we thank the federal and provincial governments for continuing this program.” “We appreciate the long-term commit-ment to develop more irrigated acres in Sas-katchewan,” Saskatchewan Irrigation Proj-
ects Association Chair Roger Pederson said. “Irrigation not only adds val-ue to farmers’ and ranchers’ bottom lines but it also contributes to the provincial economy as a whole.” Funding for the Farm and Ranch Water Infrastructure Program is provided under the federal-provincial Growing Forward 2 framework. For more information, visit the Saskatchewan Agriculture website at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/GrowingForward2.

Fighting Cancer is a Team Effort
Get your friends, family and co-workers together and join the
fight for LIFE.
Relay For Life is a 12-hour overnight, non-competitive event. Teams of 12-15 friends, family members or co-workers get together and run, walk, or stroll around a track as part of a Relay For Life team. On Relay For Life night, participants pitch tents which may be decorated in their particular theme. The tent serves as the team’s headquarters for the evening. It is a time for you and your team to join in the celebration of survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, entertainment, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. It’s a night for all ages!

WHAT IS THE UV INDEx Environment Can-ada’s UV Index is re-ported daily and rep-resents the level of ultraviolet radiation that reaches the sur-face of the Earth. The UV Index varies with seasons, cloud cover, pollution and ozone layer. The UV index can help to determine what precautions should be taken in the sun for that day. The values of the UV index range from zero and up. The higher the number, the stronger the UV levels and the less time it takes for the sun to damage the skin. Sun protection measures should be taken anytime the UV index is above 3. Extra precaution should be taken for levels of 8 and over.

On this Day in History - May 6, 1937:THE HINDENBURG DISASTER The airship Hindenburg, the largest dirigible ever built and the pride of Nazi Germany, bursts into flames upon touching its mooring mast in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 passengers and crewmembers. Frenchman Henri Giffard constructed the first successful air-ship in 1852. His hydrogen-filled blimp carried a three-horsepow-er steam engine that turned a large propeller and flew at a speed of six miles per hour. The rigid airship, often known as the “zeppelin” after the last name of its innovator, Count Ferdinand von Zeppe-lin, was developed by the Germans in the late 19th century. Unlike French airships, the German ships had a light framework of metal girders that protected a gas-filled interior. However, like Giffard’s airship, they were lifted by highly flammable hydrogen gas and vulnerable to explosion. Large enough to carry substantial num-bers of passengers, one of the most famous rigid airships was the Graf Zeppelin, a dirigible that traveled around the world in 1929. In the 1930s, the Graf Zeppelin pioneered the first transatlantic air service, leading to the construction of the Hindenburg, a larger passenger airship. On May 3, 1937, the Hindenburg left Frankfurt, Germany, for a journey across the Atlantic to Lakehurst’s Navy Air Base. Stretch-ing 804 feet from stern to bow, it carried 36 passengers and crew of 61. While attempting to moor at Lakehurst, the airship suddenly burst into flames, probably after a spark ignited its hydrogen core. Rapidly falling 200 feet to the ground, the hull of the airship in-cinerated within seconds. Thirteen passengers, 21 crewmen, and 1 civilian member of the ground crew lost their lives, and most of the survivors suffered substantial injuries. Radio announcer Herb Morrison, who came to Lakehurst to record a routine voice-over for an NBC newsreel, immortalized the Hindenberg disaster in a famous on-the-scene description in which he emotionally declared, “Oh, the humanity!” The record-ing of Morrison’s commentary was immediately flown to New York, where it was aired as part of America’s first coast-to-coast radio news broadcast. Lighter-than-air passenger travel rapidly fell out of favor after the Hindenberg disaster, and no rigid air-ships survived World War II.

A young man at this construc-tion site was bragging that he could outdo anyone based on
his strength. He especially made fun of one of the older workman. After several minutes, the older
worker had enough. “Why don’t you put your money
where you mouth is?” he said. “I’ll bet a week’s wages that I can haul something in a wheelbarrow over
to the other building that you won’t be able to wheel back.”
“You’re on, old man,” the young man replied. “Let’s see what
you’ve got.” The old man reached out and
grabbed the wheelbarrow by the handles. Then nodding to the
young man, he said with a smile, “All right. Get in.”

Two drunks are driving down the highway, drinking their beer. All of a sudden the driver notices lights flashing in his mirror; the cops are on his tail. His buddy says, “What are we going to do?” The driver says, “Don’t worry. Just do exactly what I tell you and everything will work out perfectly. First, peel the labels off our beer bottles and we’ll each stick one on our fore-head. Then shove the bottles underneath the seat, and let me do the talking.” They pull over and the cop walks up to the car. He looks at them kind of fun-ny, but asks to see the guy’s driver’s license. And he asks him, “Have you been drinking?” “Oh, no, sir,” the driver replies. “I noticed you weaving back and forth across the highway. Are you *sure* you haven’t been drinking?” the cop asks. “Oh, no, sir,” the drunk an-swers. “We haven’t had a thing to drink tonight.” “Well, I’ve got to ask you,” says the cop, “What on earth are those things on your forehead?” “That’s easy, Officer,” says the drunk. “You see, we’re both alcoholics, and we’re on the patch.”
The long wait is over and the kids are finally enjoying the spring temperatures! Hannah Turner, Paige Kutschall and Arin Park going home after school.
