Dr.DannyDyer,ProfessorofMathematics

Danny Dyer is an expert on reliability theory. How fitting, since theDepartmentofMathematicshasbeenrelyingheavilyonhimfor almost fifty years. Dyer came to Arlington State College as a freshmaninthefallof1956almostbyaccident.AftergraduatingfromGrandPrairieHighSchool,hehadspentthesummerloadingfurnitureintorailroadboxcars,andtheonlythingheknewforsureabouthisfuturecareerwasthatitwouldnotinvolvemanuallabor.Onawhim,heandthreehighschoolbuddiesdecidedtoattendcol-legeonlydaysbeforethefallsemesterbegan.

Dyerspenthishighschoolcareercoastingthroughclasseswithoutstudying, knowinghewouldreceivethestandard“C”gradesgiventoathleteswhoshowedupforclassanddidn’tcausetrouble.Hehadnoideahowmucheffortwouldberequiredincollege, andhisfreshman grades reflected those misconceptions. The “F” in algebra and“F”intrigonometryareparticularlyironic, consideringhislatercareerchoice.Insteadofdroppingoutlikehisfriendsdid,Dyer’s competitive streak kicked in, and he decided to figure out whathisprofessorsexpected.It’snosurprisethathewasearningallA’sbyhissecondyearoncampus.Whatissurprisingisthathe’s still here, in the final years of an outstanding academic career thatculminatedinhisleadershipoftheMathematicsDepartmentaschairmanfrom2000to2005.Whenhecompletedhisundergraduatedegreein1961asamemberof the first UT Arlington baccalaureate graduating class, Dyer went ontoearnaMaster’sdegreeinmathematicsatSouthernMethodistUniversity.HereturnedtoArlingtonStateCollegein1963asastatisticsinstructorandbecameanassistantprofessorin1966.In1970hecompletedhisPh.D.inStatisticsatSMU,andsoonbecame well known in the field. His research in reliability theory created a demand for his services as a consultant to high-profile clientssuchasLosAlamosNationalLaboratory,NorthropGrum-manCorporation,theU.S.GeneralServicesAdministrationandLockheedMartin.HewasalsoindemandasanexpertwitnessinpaternitysuitsbeforeDNAtestingwasreadilyavailable.Attorneysfrequentlyhiredhimtotestifyonthestatisticalprobabilityoftheirclients’allegedpaternitybasedonthegeneticsofbloodtyping.

“This is the greatest job in the world,” he says when asked to reflect onhisyearsasaprofessor.“Ifyouloveresearch,yourworkfeelsmorelikeahobbythanajob.”
