(See AN AIR OF CHANGE, page 3)

That line of thinking was brushed aside as the UIL tossed a curveball in October, 2012, as its legislative council proposed sweeping changes for the 2013 and 14-15 seasons and approved them in January, 2013.

Creating the biggest rift

across all classifications in three decades, the UIL will add a fourth playoff team from each district in Classes 2A and 3A.

Classes 5A and 4A were previously the only conferences to allow four playoff teams per district and

W ith the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment and its usual slew of changes still a year away, the 2013 season was expected to pass

without much preseason fanfare.the new amendment now allows four teams in 3A and 2A.

The council also voted to place the creation of a split conference format for 3A football on a referendum ballot.

School superintendents voted in favor of the split format and that change will go into effect during the 2014-15 alignment.

format will classify 3A teams as either Division I or Division II prior to the season and place them in districts accordingly.

The creation of a Class 6A conference is actually more of a renaming process as the six-man division will simply become 1A and 1A becomes 2A and all other conferences will follow suit.

Locally, Dilley and Cotulla will “move up” to 3A while Pearsall will compete in 4A, however, in name only.

The move is similar to one made prior to the 1980-81 school year when Class 5A was created and Class B become Class A.

Locally, coaches had mixed reactions to the proposed changes.

“No doubt the adding of another team will generate excitement among everybody,” Pearsall High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David Silva said. “Our district is pretty even so there will be some competition among everybody for the four playoff spots.

“It’s good, basically everybody has a legitimate shot at making it. Some people will say it’s going to be watered down and there’s going to be big mismatches but we’ll just have to see.

“Some districts in the state really have four legitimate playoff teams that can go far,” Silva said. “I guess you could also run into a scenario where a first place team from a strong district faces a fourth place team from a district that’s not so tough.”

“It will be good,” Silva said of the split conference format. “It’ll create, not parity, but maybe eliminate some of the bigger school playing smaller schools in the playoffs.”

“With a state this big and so many schools, something has to be done to try and even things out some. Increasing the number of seeded playoff

teams in 2A and 3A to four per district, I believe, ‘waters’ down the overall quality of playoff football teams and takes away from the allure of Texas high school football playoffs,” DHS Athletic Director

and Head Football Coach Jody Cantu. “Also, it creates a stage of foreseeable blowouts between top seeded teams and the lower seeded teams of neighboring districts.

“However, it is a great opportunity for all school districts and their football faithful to prolong their football seasons, which, in turn, will also generate extra revenue during a time when many school districts are strapped for cash.

“Creating a 6A conference and bumping lower classifications up

a level is definitely needed and long overdue,” Coach Cantu said. “It allows UIL to keep up with the exploding population of suburbias in the great state of Texas and keeping the playing field even.”

Cotulla Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Joseph Alvarado was unavailable for comment.

4 2013 FOOTBALL PREVIEW - FRIO-NUECESCURRENT.COM

Citing a firm belief in his athletes, staff and his own coaching philosophy, new Pearsall High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach David Silva is optimistic the Mavericks can turn things around in 2013.

Silva came to Pearsall via Dilley, where he cut his teeth moving up the ranks under long-time coach Kelly Shull.

He was an integral part of the Wolves’ success through the years, having a hand in guiding them to the playoffs every year in the 1990s and 18 times in 22 seasons.

“I am an optimistic person, I took this job because I know we have the kids to turn it around and I know what it takes to win,” the coach said. “I was very fortunate to work under a great coach in Kelly Shull and a lot of the things we do here are a reflection of what I know works.

“The staff I’ve put together is a great football staff. I am confident that we will put our kids in a position to win every game we compete in.

“As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not experimenting with anything,” Silva said.

“The scheme I’m putting in has a 21-year patent behind it!”Known for his offensive prowess, Silva is also an old-school disciplinarian

who preaches the virtues of teamwork, character and discipline. “I want the 2013 Mavericks to be known as a team that plays hard, is a well-

disciplined team and displays character on and off the field,” he said. “We will pick the pace up from an offensive standpoint and put pressure on defenses to adjust on the run. Defensively, we are coming after you!

“I want other schools to know that we will not be one dimensional. We will be able to run and pass the ball.”

The Mavericks return a number of skill players on the offensive side of the ball and they’ve taken to Silva’s offensive scheme.

“Offensively, we look sharp,” he said. “Being able to put in the new scheme in January helped tremendously. Our run offense is solid but our pass offense needs more consistency, but will come with more live situations we face.”

Jason Wolfe is back at the quarterback position and in early workouts has shown vast improvement.

“He brings athleticism to the position,” the coach said. “Through the 7-on-7 summer league play and working on throwing fundamentals and mechanics, he will put stress on defenses now having to worry about throwing and

not just running the ball.“TJ Navarro will also get

playing time at quarterback. He brings a strong leadership ability to the position having run this offensive scheme last year at the junior varsity level.

“He has become a student of the game and knows all the ‘ins and outs’ of the offense.”

Jerry Chairez split time with Troy Rios a year ago, racking up 468 yards and a touchdown and figures to be one of the feature backs in Silva’s offense.

“He made the commitment to be an all-district player last spring and did all he

“George Brady has worked hard since last spring and will look to have a breakout year at fullback.

Ray Palomeque and Esteban Camacho also had great off-seasons and a great summer conditioning camp.”

Although losing many of their starters from last season, the defensive unit will still be led by Coach Randy Graf, who, despite the team’s 3-7 record, built a unit that kept Pearsall within striking distance in almost every game.

“Newcomers that will make an impact include Brian Martinez, Colton Briscoe, Josh Luna, Diego Lopez, Joseph Youngblood, Martin Delgado and Isaiah Lucio.”

Silva has set a goal for the team to return to the playoffs this year but maintains that the team will be in a battle

with perennial rivals Devine and Hondo.

“You really can’t argue with the fact that Devine will be the heavy favorite,” he said. “They have tradition and that alone goes a long way!

“Knowing that other teams lost a lot to graduation and our kids buying into our scheme and practicing with the confidence of knowing what to do and what their roles are, I feel we will be in the hunt for one of the three remaining playoff spots.”

He then graduated fromEast Texas State Universityin Commerce.“My overall philosophy ties in to a lot of

different things,” Silva said. “A big one for me is that I treat kids the way I would want my son or daughter treated.

“Coach ‘em up is something I tell my coaches to do daily,” he said. “At the younger levels, things for me are about as basic as you can get; you practice, you play. That’s the key to keeping them in the program.”

The coach outlined his short-term and long-term goals for the Pearsall ISD program. “In the short-term, our goal is to get as many kids in athletics as possible. We want to increase participation,” Silva said. “We’re also about getting the kids to buy into the importance of academics.

Everything we do is based on a simple philosophy, just good old-fashioned values.“In the long-term, I would like to see that every program here is successful, boys

and girls,” he said. “One of my goals is to try and make it out to every single event

possible. I want the kids to know that I support them in everything they do whether its athletics, academics or other activities.

“I believe the highlight of any coaching or teaching career should be to see these kids walking across that graduation stage and seeing them move on to the next level.

“I feel like I’m a prime example of the fact that there’s a place for everyone,” Silva said. “I wasn’t the biggest kid out there and had to go two states away to play; but there is a place for everyone.”

So far, Silva spent his coaching career in Dilley, serving as the junior high coordinator in 1991 and as an assistant varsity baseball and football coach in ‘91-’92. The coach spent eight years coaching the varsity basketball and baseball teams and served as offensive coordinator from 1994 through the 2011-12 season.

Silva said that response from the community has been good.“I’m a very visible person, I want to get to know people. If I don’t know you and

you know me, come up and introduce yourself.”

My overall philosophy ties it to a lot of different things,

Back in the playoffs for the first time in three years, Dilley revived its postseason fire and enters the 2013 season seeking, not only a return trip, but a district title and a deeper postseason push. “Our team goal is to win the district title, advance into the

state playoffs and make a push at the 2A Division II state championship,” Dilley High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Jody Cantu said. “After a two-year hiatus from the state playoffs and last year’s disappointing loss at Karnes City for a share of the district title...we have been working hard to earn a trip back. We want to win it outright and advance back into the playoffs.”

Citing its strength and conditioning program as a key to the team’s return to the playoffs last year, Cantu said that team strength, speed, stamina and endurance will be crucial once again this year.

“Strength and conditioning were some of the key components to our return to the state playoffs last year,” he said. “And I’m pleased how the boys have kept their overall strength and size throughout the summer.

“We have a couple of more weeks of game situation practices until I’m satisfied with our overall stamina and endurance. Coach Berrelez has taken

the position of strength and conditioning coach and done a magnificent job.”

Team conditioning will play a huge factor as offensive coordinator Moses Cantu is set to really the push the pace when the Wolves have the ball.

“We’re really working on pushing the pace and getting plays runs at a high up-tempo pace,” Moses Cantu said. “Everyone gets tired but we still want to be effective and execute when we’re tired.”

“Offensively, we have greatly increased our practice tempo,” Jody Cantu said. “What looked like a two-minute drill last year has now become our standard pace for our offense.

“The offense is extremely focused and have consistently executed our schemes at a high percentage.”

him with an equally explosive threat.

“Leo Garcia will take the reins this year at quarterback. He brings with him leadership and confidence and the individual expectations as he has excelled in every position he has played for the Wolves.

“His ability to identify pre-

snap coverage alignments and zones during the play makes him an efficient passer and elusive read-option quarterback.”

With Orlando Bernal also gone, the Wolves will be young at the running back position but that youth will be in the form of what Cantu describes as a powerful,

patient runner. “OJ Perez will carry the

rock for the Wolves after a successful junior varsity season and successful outings

in two varsity games,” the coach said. “His frame and running style are reminiscent of Pearsall’s Mario Camacho

in 2009. His patience and ability to accelerate through the hole accompanied with raw strength and power to run through tackles sets up OJ to have a successful sophomore

campaign.”With talent at quarterback

and running back, Cantu, however, might have his biggest talent at the wide receiver spot in Sabby Torres.

“Sabby will lead the receiving corps this season after a successful off-season and dominant 7-on-7 showing,” Cantu said. “Expect to hear a lot from Torres. He brings 4.5 (second) speed, accompanied with a 31-inch vertical leap and can outrun and body-position any cornerback to pull the ball out of the air.”

Defensively, expect the Wolves to be moving around and causing chaos.

“We have schemed to maximize our team speed,” Silva said of the defense. “Mastering that scheme will only increase our closing speed and turnover ratio. The boys are flying to the ball and looking to make the big play.

“Joe Dominic Garcia is returning as a first-team all-district outside linebacker after posting 70 total tackles, seven quarterback sacks, four forced fumbles and a defensive touchdown.

“He will remain at the position and our scheme will be catered to accommodate his dominant style of play and ability to create turnovers.”

Like most South Texas 2A school’s, Dilley’s never been known for its depth at any position and will once again rely on its front line to man both sides.

“Key players this year include Santana Aguilar (offensive tackle), Julius Gonzales (guard) and Alejandro Guzman (tackle), who will patrol the trenches on both sides of the line,” Cantu said. “They bring experience, size, strength and the tenacity needed to dominate in the trenches.

“Fabian Garza will take over at the free safety position and has had a tremendous camp this far while Daniel Autrey returns at inside linebacker with football smarts and punishing tackling.”

With his team back in the playoff hunt Cantu anticipates fighting it out with Karnes City and Poth for the top spot in the standings and the District 15-2A, Division II title.

“Karnes City will be defending the district title so I look forward to them continuing where they left off,” he said. “Poth, I look forward to them working to once

again finish on top of the district after last season.

“Strong safety Fabian Garza once told me that the Dilley Wolves were in the business of building championship-caliber young men, not a championship-

caliber football team,”Cantu said. “In hindsight he’s correct, however, I also believe that a team full of championship-caliber young men will only yield a championship-caliber football team.”

It’s rare to eat together, sometimes I’ll take cold cuts and we’ll eat inside the board room...

Four years ago Nelly Cantu married her husband Jody, knowing fully the sacrifices that came with being a coach’s wife. She however, viewed this as a bonus. Before acquiring the position as athletic director for Dilley ISD prior to the 2012 season, he served in the same capacity at

Pearsall. His new job position requires long hours with responsibilities being stretched

throughout the school year for all sports, not just during football season. Following her husband’s job change, Nelly took a position with Dilley ISD as a payroll clerk and accountants payable.

She stresses, however, that even though the couple work within the very same school district, it is only on rare occasions that they see one another.

“It’s rare to eat together, sometimes I’ll take cold cuts and we’ll eat inside the board room at the administration office,” she said. “This is alone time for us.”

Two children and an increase in responsibility later, the couple cherish any alone time they get.

“We have one date during football season, and it’s usually during the off week,” she said.

The couple travels to San Antonio one night during the week and eat a nice dinner then return home. “I’m very thankful for my sister, Lucy, who will watch the girls so Jody and I can do this.”

Truly a woman of many hats, her day consists of being a wife, mother and employee. On a typical day she hits the ground running at 5 a.m.

After she gets herself ready for the day, she’ll wake the girls and get them dressed. The couple have two daughters, Madison, 5 and Olivia, 4. Jody is long gone by the time the girls wake up.

“Jody leaves before the girls get up and doesn’t get home till around 11 p.m.”Being a coach’s wife requires acceptance, understanding of the long hours, sacrifice

of family time, patience to keep their mouth shut, and just a general love for the game.

“I have all that,” Nelly says. She says the ultimate sacrifice the couple share is the time Jody loses with the girls.

He misses the little things. An imposing 6’3” man on the football field, Nelly says Jody lets his guard down when it comes to the girls. Through a smile she speaks of moments when he comes home unexpectedly early.

“It’s a surprise,” she says. “The girls will hear the keys and run and hide in his closet. He’ll walk through the house and knock on the walls-‘I hear something’-he’ll call out.”

She says the joy in their eyes and loud laughter as they scream with excitement and jump into his arms makes her forget about the time they’ve lost by sharing their ‘daddy’ and cherishes that priceless moment.

During the week, Nelly hits the track at 4:30 p.m. for some of ‘her’ time. After running two miles, she’ll pick up her girls and head home to Pearsall, to begin her

duties as a mother and wife. She laughs, joking that she feels like a single

mom helping daughter Madison with homework, making dinner, performing house-cleaning duties and being on ‘mommy-patrol’. After putting the girls to bed, her day continues. She irons clothes, gets bags ready for school, does laundry and cleans up after the children.

Gameday comes and Nelly is dressed from head to toe in spirit gear that coaches’ wives make during the week. She is ready to take on Friday. Today, like

every other day, she will be his biggest fan, his cheerleader. After work, she’ll pick up her girls from her mother-in-law and feeds them. She

arrives at the stadium about an hour before kickoff to take care of any loose ends.

She sits in the bleachers, her cowbell in hand, cheering her husband on and also collects money from the sale of football programs. She is also his secretary. “I sit right on the 50-yard line,” she said. “I like to see everything.”

Nelly has developed a special bond with other coaches’ wives, one being her sister-in-law, Elia. “We sit together, our kids take care of one another, we are a family,” she says. These amazing women offer support and comfort as each football season poses a new journey. After every home game, the

‘family’ that shares many a long night, gathers at a designated home and has dinner.

The strong bond these women share helps make the negative banter expressed by some fans during and after games much easier to swallow. “You know one of the hardest things is dealing with negative remarks, especially to my children,” she said.

Lorena, Nelly’s oldest daughter, has questioned her mom about the negative comments aimed at her step-dad when he became the new AD. “I just told her not to listen, brush it off and smile.” She’s learned the value of tolerance and growing a thick

skin.Sunday’s are family day as

Jody fulfills his film-breakdown duties at home after church. “He’s here physically, but not mentally,” she laughed. Madison and Olivia, however, still enjoy their favorite pasttime with daddy, listening to music on the Ipad, especially Cody Johnson.

Nelly says she realizes that giving up time with Jody is not necessarily a bad thing. She’s learned to share him with athletes who need his guidance, not only on the field, but off it as well.

Some nights all she gets is a kiss on the forehead and a “babe, I’m home,” and she is content with that.

“Unless you’re a coach’s wife, you wouldn’t know what it’s like to

be one. There’s a saying that goes something like this, ‘Behind every great man is a great woman.’ Now,

I’m not saying I’m a great man, but what I am saying is my wife is a great woman. I would not be Coach Cantu if it wasn’t for my beautiful wife. She is my rock,

my comforter, my supporter and, most importantly, my best friend. Her strength, patience and grace allow me to take on the good and not so good that comes with being a head football coach. I thank the good lord every night for blessing me, not with just a woman; but

FRIO-NUECESCURRENT.COM - 2013 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 19

After knocking on the doorstep of a playoff berth in 2012, the Cotulla Cowboys are primed to bust that door down this season as the team looks to make that final push and clinch a spot in the postseason tournament.

The Cowboys went 6-4 last season and 4-3 in league play, losing only to the three playoff qualifiers.

Aiding the Cowboys’ push this season will be a veteran defense that returns seven starters and an assist from the University Interscholastic League, which in January approved an amendment that will add a fourth playoff team from each district in Classes 3A and 2A.

Had that measure been in place a year ago, the Cowboys’ 6-4, 4-3 mark would have been good enough to place them in the Division II postseason bracket.

Instead, the team will have to achieve similar success this year, although they’ve lost a ton of talent on the offensive end.

Gone are quarterback JoJo Tellez, a three-year starter, Joel Garcia, a four-year contributor at running back and fullback David Garza. Linebacker Ryan

Umanzor will also be a big loss for the team in the leadership department. Cotulla’s defense will be counted on early to

hold things together as the offense finds its legs in pre-district play.

The Cowboys still possess a bevy of talent with four-year starter Saul Garcia toting the rock at fullback. He’ll ease the transition of new quarterback Kade Northcutt, who’ll look to replace Tellez’ production at quarterback.

Halfback Ricky Ayala and wide receiver Noe Rodriguez are also playmakers that will ease Northcutt’s transition under center.

The team played well to open the season, winning three of four games and battled 3A playoff contender Carrizo Springs in close outing.

The team then went into a free-fall, losing three straight games to each of the eventual District 15-2A, Division II playoff teams, Poth, Karnes City and Dilley.

While Poth crushed the

Cowboys in their outing, Cotulla was on the verge of upsetting league champion Karnes City before dropping a heartbreaking 19-7 decision.

Still stinging from that loss, the Cowboys then took

on long-time rival Dilley and fell 34-27 in another classic

contest in the IH-35 series.

Those narrow losses ultimately cost the Cowboys their shot at the 2012 playoffs.

Cotulla is hoping to turn things around in 2013 behind its experienced defensive unit.

Veteran linebackers Saul Garcia, a four-year letter and all-district defensive selection Johnny Perez will lead the unit.

Garcia has seen varsity action since his freshman year and has valuable playoff experience while Cotulla Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Joseph Alvarado lauded Perez, saying the speedy junior “has a natural ability to find the ball and is a good hitter.”

Cornerbacks Rodriguez and Marcus Tellez return to the secondary where they will likewise provide valuable experience.

On the defensive front, tackle Jared Garcia is a solid prescence and sees action on both sides of the ball.

As the season heats up, Cotulla will need its offense to come around and score points.

Poth and Dilley are loaded this season and will be gunning for a district showdown.

Karnes City looks vulnerable with only five of 22 starters returning but have the league’s top passer returning in Dylan Lopez.

Stockdale could be a team to watch

for as they will feature the district’s top runner in Matt Valadez, the pre-season Offensive Most Valuable Player, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine.

Cotulla was on the cusp of their second playoff berth in three years last season and things are aligning in 2013 for the Cowboys to ride into the postseason, barring injuries. A young offense will need to mature quickly for Cotulla to ‘get over the hump.’
