IN THE DEAN’S WORDS‘At UCR, professors encourage you to speak up in class, to take initiative in formulating your own research questions and research projects, to challenge received wisdom in a rigorous yet fair-minded way, and to express yourself convincingly in writing, in speaking, and in visual presentations. We offer a broad academic curriculum in the arts and humanities, social science, science, and engineering. Guided by the advice of academic faculty, you will gradually build your own individual program. Studying at UCR is an exercise in thinking carefully about your passions, interests, and ambitions; learning to understand what knowledge and skills are needed in order to fulfil them. That, to us, is the essence of undergraduate education.
Our alumni are scholars, writers, judges, scientists, entrepreneurs, medical doctors, conservationists and environmentalists; they are lawyers, musicians, bankers, activists, teachers, artists, politicians, diplomats, strategic advisors – and so much more. What sets UCR alumni apart is their self-confidence, their civic engagement, and their entrepreneurial sense of opportunity. Be one of them, and come join us at University College Roosevelt’.
Prof. Bert van den Brink, Dean UCR
At University College Roosevelt you get an education built
around you. You create your own program by choosing courses
from close to forty disciplines. From Art History to Computer
Science and from Economics to Mechanical Engineering, there
is always a combination that will fit you. In and outside your
classes you interact with engaged professors. Our tight-knit
community enables you to find and explore your passions and
enjoy a wonderful student life in Middelburg.
IS THIS YOU?
✓ Motivated ✓ Engaged
✓ Eager to learn ✓ Social
✓ Curious ✓ Not afraid to choose for something off the beaten path ✓ Broadly interested
Then UCR might be the right place for you!
AN EDUCATION BUILT AROUND YOU
BUILD YOUR OWN PROGRAMAt UCR we offer a three-year Liberal Arts & Sciences program. This means that we have four academic departments: Arts & Humanities, Engineering, Science and Social Science. Together, these departments cover the entire spectrum of academic fields. We refer to those as tracks.
Each track is composed of different courses, with every course covering a specific aspect of the academic field. Courses are offered at either an introductory, intermediate or advanced level. You will start with introductory courses and work your way up to the advanced level. For example, within Environmental Science, you start with an Introduction to Biodiversity (Introductory), continue with Ecology and Evolution (Intermediate) and finalize with Marine Biology (Advanced). Of course there are many more options. Have a look at our course offerings over the next few pages!
STUDENT PROFILE
‘Middelburg is a beautiful and buzzing city’From the moment I stepped inside the beautiful building, I immediately knew that UCR was place that I had been looking for. Middelburg is a beautiful city to live in; it has a buzzing city center where I can go for drinks with my friends, yet there is plenty of nature close by where I can go for a run.I was looking for a Bachelor program that challenged me, not only on the level of academia, but also in the subjects that I could explore. Any other Law Bachelor program would not have been able to give me the experiences I have had at UCR. Besides the building and the course offerings, the people here at UCR make me feel at home.

ORIENTATIONIn your first year, you will start with Orientation. You
will take two mandatory courses; Academic Writing &
Presenting and Methods & Statistics I. Next to that, you
have the chance to explore the curriculum and figure
out what you want to continue studying. You will mostly
take introductory courses. In your first year, you should
also think about whether you want to go on Exchange.
You do not need to do all of this alone. UCR has
many options that help support you throughout
your 3-year program.
1. TUTOR SYSTEMEvery student has a personal tutor, a professor who is the first person you contact in case there are problems and who helps to create the best academic program with you.
2. EARLY WARNING SYSTEMEvery semester before the mid-term break, professors are asked to indicate which students may be struggling. That way, we can still help them before the problem becomes too large.
3. STUDY SKILLS SUPPORTMany of the classes require papers and reports. If that is something you struggle with, you can always get in touch with Writing Support. They help you to improve your papers and proofread where necessary. You can also take workshops on time management, study strategies and meditation.
4. COUNSELORIf you are having difficulties with your mental health or just need to talk, you can always make an appointment with the Counselor. They are also able to refer you to further specialized care.
5. STUDENT BOARDSBesides professors and staff, you can also find help in the student boards. The Housing Affairs Council helps with housing issues, and the Academic Affairs Council is there for your academic questions.
YOUR PROGRAM THROUGH THE YEARS
HOW DO WE SUPPORT YOU?
MODERATIONAt the start of your second year, you will choose your
Major. During Moderation, which takes place in your third
semester, you discuss your future with the professors of
the fields you find most interesting. You will mostly take
intermediate and advanced courses. You may even go on
Exchange in your fourth (or fifth) semester.
GRADUATION Your third year is preparing for graduation and beyond.
You take the intermediate and advanced courses that
will best fit your choice of Master program. Next to that,
you complete your research during your Senior Project.
At the end, we celebrate Graduation with you.

STUDENT PROFILE
STUDENT LIFE A university is not complete without a social life
– meet the student organizations that will make
your time at UCR a lot more fun!
Roosevelt’s All Student Association (RASA), is central to student life in Middelburg. It serves as the umbrella association for all the societies and teams. These groups organize extracurricular activities that are open to all students.
Academic Affairs Council (AAC), who save the day by handling complaints, monitor academic standards and represent the students in governance. They help you to reach your full academic potential.
Common House Elliott (CHEF) is the completely student run venue with a bar, study areas, classrooms, and meeting spaces. Many of the activities at UCR are hosted in Elliott, as well as the weekly parties.
Housing Affairs Council (HAC) will make your life easier when it comes to all things housing and represent your housing interests.
IS IT JUST ABOUT STUDYING?
‘This society gave me my dearest friends’ UCR allows me to not only explore my academic interests (which are plenty), but also to extend my social network and follow my other passions. For example, I have been an active member of the theatre society (THEATRA) for all my semesters here, and have even been the chair of this society for a year. We perform twice a year; in the Fall semester we have two short plays and one short musical, and in the Spring semester we perform one big play in the Stadsschouwburg of Middelburg. Everything, from costumes to set to directing, is organized by students. I have always loved acting and theatre, and this society gave me the opportunity to become even more involved in this. Being part of the THEATRA board taught me so much about organizing big events, collaborating with other people, and acting itself. Most importantly, this society gave me my dearest friends, whom I will cherish for the rest of my life. Being part of a society is so much fun and it adds a lot to your experience as a student. Academics here can be challenging, but my society always provided support and fun for me when I was feeling stressed. Besides this, I get to perform every semester; how awesome is that?!
Maran van der Oord (Class of 2020), Interdepartmental major in Linguistics, Cognitive Science, and Psychology from the Netherlands
SOCIETIES AND TEAMS Many societies – based around interests – and teams – based around a specific goal – exist under the RASA umbrella. Join Cooking Society for all things food, MedAffairs if you are into medicine, THEATRA for all things acting or one of the many others. Perhaps you prefer to make a yearbook or organize the end-of-term-party, that’s also possible. Something missing? Find enough people to join you and start it yourself!
MIDDELBURGAs well as activities on Campus, you can also explore Middelburg. The wonderful library, study spaces at the Archives, and the Lange Jan tower are fun to discover. You can also have an ice cream or drink on the Market square or join one of the volunteering activities organized by PUMA.

KAART?
WHERE WILL YOU LIVEMiddelburg is a relatively small but buzzing city, which enjoys the luxury of being the urban heart of a unique delta area of great natural beauty. It has a vibrant cultural life, a fascinating history of political and trade relations, and is at the crossroads between the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the rest of Europe.
YOUR FUTURE HOMEThis is where you will cook, eat, study, gossip, and party with fellow students from all over the world. You do not need to worry about finding a place, as housing is guaranteed for three years. In our Bagijnhof location students have their own private bedroom but share bathroom and kitchen facilities with 9 or 15other students. In our other locations students either have their own personal apartment or share a bathroom and kitchen with one other student.
ALUMNUS PROFILE
‘Research I did at UCR prepared me for my career’At University College Roosevelt I majored in Social Science with tracks in International Relations and Sociology, and was always interested in technology. Thanks to the interdisciplinary Liberal Arts & Sciences, I pooled academic resources and did research on Cyberwarfare. This project was my first introduction to the field of Cybersecurity and was a major milestone in preparing me for my career in this field.
After UCR, I went on to a Master’s of Science in Crisis and Security Management at Leiden University and worked at the Centre for Terrorism and Counter Terrorism, UNDP in New York City, the HCSS in The Hague, and FGV’s Center for Technology and Society in Rio de Janeiro. Currently, I work for Capgemini Invent as a Senior Manager in Cyber Security.
