Students should complete work, including homework, on time and to the best of their ability

Students should respond to written feedback

Students should strive to reach an objective which challenges them and allows them to make progress within the lesson

Students should be aware of their target level and recognise ways they can improve and develop their work to achieve this target

Students should behave appropriately in lessons and will be aware of the ‘C’ system, should they not follow these expectations

What are our expectations of students at Rawlins?

Page 5: An introduction to the Year 7 pathway at Rawlins and how

In all lessons at Rawlins, teachers will present students with a BIG question e.g.;

‘Is it OK for the media to use an image like this?’

‘How can language be used to have an effect on the reader?’

‘What is the most effective setting for a horror story?’

The BIG question helps students to understand the focus of the lesson and to recognise what they will be learning during each session; this may be skills based, analytical or creative

How are lessons structured?

Page 6: An introduction to the Year 7 pathway at Rawlins and how

Students will also be presented with 3 differentiated objectives per lesson as they will in every lesson. In English, these will reflect the difficulty of the skill they are being asked to display;

Evaluation; analysis; comprehension; punctuation, characterisation etc…

How are lessons structured?

Lessons begin with fifteen minutes of reading. This is tracked using Accelerated Reader

All Yr7 students have weekly spelling tests which are determined by their start of year spelling age tests

How are lessons structured?

Students will follow a pathway comprising of 4 topics. These topics will develop the skills students will ultimately require in their GCSE examinations

Homework and assessments are built in to the pathway along with analysis of fiction and non-fiction, speaking and listening and creative tasks

Units are in ten week blocks which fit into our reporting cycle

What will students be learning?

Students complete several assessed tasks per unit including at least one reading/analytical assessment and one writing/creative. This will be tracked using GCSE style numerical grades

Where relevant, speaking and listening will also be assessed during the units

Student progression can be monitored over the course of these assessments and students also have a ‘flight path’ in their exercise books so they can view their own achievements

How is achievement monitored?

Page 11: An introduction to the Year 7 pathway at Rawlins and how

You will find that there are gaps in your spelling lists after week 3/4. These gaps represent a word that you have already learnt that fits

alphabetically into the list.
