Academy is a well-established Post 16 centre of learning where high expectations and excellent teaching with experienced professionals ensure that our students thrive.

Alongside your academic studies, there is a host of valuable enrichment activities, which will enhance your Post 16 experience at Rawlins. There are numerous opportunities for students to occupy positions of responsibility and contribute to Rawlins community life and to broaden your horizons locally, nationally and internationally.

High quality pastoral support and careers guidance are offered throughout Post 16 to ensure that your experience is fulfilling and that there is no limit to your achievement. You will be supported throughout years 12 and 13 in crucial areas such as writing your personal statement and understanding the UCAS process from beginning to end.

Positive relationships between students, staff and parents underpin everything we do. Current Rawlins students know that this is a priority and can be confident that this will remain a focus in Post 16. Making choices for your future

Post 16 learning is about choosing courses that match your interests and aspirations. We proudly offer over 35 A-Level and BTEC courses that allow you to create a study timetable that is tailored to you.

When it comes to university applications it is important that you are clear about expectations and entry requirements and that you are able to ask the right questions. Through the application process, we give extensive information and support to you so that you make the right choices. It is imperative that you build on GCSE success to make informed decisions and ensure you have the necessary qualifications for the next step, be that university, an advanced apprenticeship or a different route.

Learning routes

Students study four A-Level courses (or BTEC equivalents) in year 12 with the option of progressing to either four or three courses in year 13. Every student also follows a ‘wider core’ programme, which enables you to select suitable learning activities from a wide range of options. These include opportunities for Extended Projects with additional A-Level accreditation, work experience, mentoring, sports and vocational experience.

A student enrolling on A-Level courses must meet the following criteria:• Five GCSEs at grades A*- C• Some subjects require a GCSE grade C in English

Language, English Literature or Mathematics• In some subjects, students will be asked to present a

portfolio of work or have an audition• Students who do not have at least a C grade at GCSE

in English and/or Mathematics must study that subject as part of their wider core studies

• A student enrolling on a combination of BTEC and A-Level courses must meet the following entrance criteria: Five GCSEs at grades A*- C or BTECs at Merit - Distinction*

Enrichment

We believe that educational fulfilment is not just about academic success. At Rawlins, there are unlimited opportunities to get involved, enrich your experience and realise aspirations. Enrichment activities integrate with courses to create a holistic programme of study and play a crucial role in the wider development of our students. They add valuable depth to university applications.

Enrichment activities include:• House leadership – as part of Rawlins’ successful

house system, Post 16 students can take leadership roles with peers and younger students such as House Captain, House Sports Captain, Arts Captain and Charities Captain. Students gain leadership experience through organising events, attending governing body meetings and leading assemblies.

• Mentoring – many students work within Rawlins and in primary schools, supporting and mentoring, younger students. This is a rewarding experience as well as an excellent addition to your curriculum vitae or university application.

• Academic enrichment – students have the opportunity to study complimentary Open University modules and the level 3 Extended Project. These qualifications enable you to demonstrate a breadth of study and independent research skills to employers and universities.

• Volunteering – many students get involved in voluntary activities which support the wider community, for example supporting the Reading Scheme in local primary schools, sports coaching, language classes and fundraising for charities.

• Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme – you can take part in DofE to Bronze, Silver and Gold level – a richly rewarding way to spend your time!

• Sport – Rawlins is renowned for its successful sports teams and students can be involved with competitive teams, play for fun or take coaching qualifications and help to lead teams alongside members of staff.

• The arts – Rawlins is also renowned for outstanding visual art, music, dance and drama – all of which can be studied at A-Level or enjoyed as enrichment activities.

Transition

A smooth transition from year 11 to Post 16 is really important for success. You need to be highly organised and prepared to work more independently on A-Level and level 3 BTEC courses. If you choose to study at the Rawlins Academy Post 16 centre, a series of induction activities will prepare you for those important firstfew days. Transition projects are set to be completed over the summer so that you are already switched on to advanced study right at the start of year 12. Transition support continues through the autumn term to ensure that you have made the right choices and to enable any necessary tweaking of study programmes to take place.

Welfare and support

Pastoral careRawlins prides itself on supporting every student’s wellbeing and happiness. Individual support is provided by your personal coach, your House Team Leader and others who are experts in working with older students. All teachers work really hard to make sure that Post 16 students are nurtured to ensure success.

Academic reviewAcademic progress is monitored very closely in class, through assessments, mock exams and progress checks. Necessary support and intervention are provided to keep you on track to success.

UCAS and careersThroughout your Rawlins Academy Post 16 experience, you will be given the most up to date information, rigorous support and careers guidance. Students applying for university go to the UCAS convention, university open days and for some, the OxbridgeConvention. We organise assemblies and evening meetings for students, and parents, to explain potentially confusing matters such as Student Finance and UCAS applications.
