Editorial

When another year starts, we always look back to the year that was and how fast it flew by! The things we have done and the things we have not managed to do. The New Year comes with new plans, new hopes and both old and new dreams.

Kingsway Tyres had a great 2012 with many changes and new things that we learnt. We are in the process of starting a new business software to work more efficiently – a project that started last year.

As part of our CSR activities we have supported the Guru Nanak both in Nairobi (in the KCB Rally) and donated money for their clinic in Mombasa. We also sent a team from the Mombasa branches to the Gokarting competition organized by the Round table of Mombasa which turned out to be a good motivating event for the Mombasa staff. These are just a few highlights from the end of last year.

With this note, Let us also make this year count - each month, each day, each moment! We have great things in-store for everyone.

Annual Party

Junior Staff Party

Senior staff annual party this year was themed “Black, White and Elegant”. Everyone outshined the other in the dressing, especially the ladies! The participants of the games that were played in the early part of the evening were highly entertaining together with the

vibrant Slum Drummers. The awards ceremony, always the highlight of the party, saw winners from Funzi road branch, Corner plaza branch, University way branch, Mombasa, ICT Department, Sales department and Finance department excelling in their field and beyond. Congratulations to all!

The workshop staff this year had an unforgettable treat countrywide. With their new year’s presents, the Nairobi staff also got together at Hillock Country club for a scrumptious lunch, music and drinks. The upcountry branches also treated their junior staff to delicious lunches

at their respective towns. What a grand way of ushering in the New Year and nurturing fellowship!

Women’s Tyre Clinic

Testimonial - Women’s Tyre Clinic

We hosted the 3rd of its kind, Women’s tyre clinic in December 2012. Partnering with Toyota Kenya for the know-about-your-car basics and the Kenya Police representative to talk about Road safety, we had yet

another successful event with ladies leaving fully equipped with practice and knowledge of their tyres, car and how to be safe on the roads. I would like to thank the partners and the participants! To explain what happened, we have a testimonial to share from Ann Gitari of the Village Market who was one of our participants.

Eager to answer questions right at the end of the tyre clinic, the ladies did a great job!

Everyone had a go to jack up the vehicle and change the tyre. The women participants celebrated and appreciated each other

in the process.

Dear Kingsway,

I write to thank you for the training you offered at the Women’s Tyre Clinic in December last year. The knowledge I gained from the sensitization programme will be of much value to me as a car owner. The Kingsway tutors were well versed with the subject matter and they answered every one of our questions, no matter how rhetorical.

It’s a noble thing what you are doing to empower women about car maintenance. Many are the times we as women have left that department to the men in our lives and it is a shame that many women cannot change a flat tyre. Women who work, pay bills and drive their own cars cannot claim to be empowered when they cannot tell the difference between ATF and Engine Oil. It is nothing to be proud of either.

I would also like to appreciate the all-female Toyota Team for being part of the training. Thanks to them, I can pop up my car bonnet with less trepidation. Special thanks goes to SSP. Beatrice Kiraguri from the Kenya Police Traffic Department for enlightening us on the recently enacted Traffic Law among other things.

It’s truly amazing that Kingsway can offer such a valuable course for free complete with stationery, refreshments, meals and best of all Kingsway merchandise and vouchers. This was by far the best Christmas gift I received.

I recommend this course to all the ladies that have never taken it before. As ladies we can certainly do better; we can show our men that we know more about cars than just driving them. Someday, this “extra” knowledge may come in handy!

Car Care for the Holidays

Easter Holiday is fast approaching and many of us are looking forward to a break from our daily routines. You perhaps have in mind a drive to an out of town holiday destination or to Shagz. But there are few things we need to do before driving off that I would like to share.

Service your car – I know this one is obvious! But sometimes, with lots of work pressure it can slip out of our minds! At least a week before travelling out, get your mechanic to check your vehicle.

If a service has already been done, it is still good to just pop the hood and check for yourself visually (yeah, don’t be scared ladies) and get assistance if necessary. Things that are important to check are Oil (Engine, Automatic Transmission Fluid, brake fluid), battery, coolant, lights, wipers, hose, fan belt/power steering belt, air filter etc.

Tyres – Inspect your tyres, visually and physically.

Quick and simple ways of checking: while you drive if you feel your car wobble, your tyres may need balancing; if your car is steering heavy towards one side, check the car alignment. When your tyre is wearing off unevenly, part of the tyre (left/right/middle of the tread) looks more worn out then rest of the tread.

It is recommended that the tyres need to be replaced before the tread depth reaches to 1.6mm. [Michelin tyres have tread wear indicators situated in the base of the main tread grooves at the height of approximately1.6mm]. This is specifically helpful not because you may get caught by cops, but for your safety, for best tyre grip while you drive!

It is recommended to replace all four tyres at a go. But if you can’t, then purchase them two at a go for each axle. However, note that it is recommended to fit the new tyres or the least worn out tyres on the rear axle. This will reduce the risk of losing control of your vehicle especially on wet roads and ensures better road handing whether your vehicle is a front or rear wheel drive.

Last but not least, check your tyre pressure! Correct tyre pressure reduces the risk of losing control of your vehicle and saves fuel, among other benefits. Remember 2 things; one – air escapes from a tyre naturally due to various reasons. If there is damage, get the tyre or rim repaired or replaced; two – check tyre pressure when the tyre is cold. If they are hot from driving already, it is advisable to add 4-5psi more to the pressure recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Spare tyre & tools – The spare tyre is something that can be overlooked easily. However, it is crucial that the spare tyre is in good condition, with no punctures, all repairs made, has the right tyre pressure and is well balanced. Ensure that your car has the right jack, wheel spanner and wheel nut tools in check!

It is recommended that you have the actual size spare tyre and not a donut tyre. However, if you must go with a donut tyre, don’t use it for too long a distance. Find the nearest pit stop and get your tyre repaired and replaced. Donut tyres are good for an emergency for a short distance, just to get you to the nearest mechanic.

Safety – With a rise in road accidents, we can never be too safe. Load in your car a well equipped first aid box, fire extinguisher and life savers. Drive in the correct speed limits and take caution on the road when overtaking. Aim to reach the destination, may be a bit later than anticipated but in one piece!

Even after thorough checks, things may go wrong on the journey so always be on guard and be prepared.

Visit our Kingsway Tyre Centres countywide for tyres and tyre care before your journey.

The year’s continuous training carried on to the last quarter 2012. The Staff was immersed in preparing for the new ERP we are putting into place. Headed by our ICT Manager, Abhishek Tiwary all branches and departments went through a rigorous training

schedule to get ready for go-Live.

The Senior management and marketing executives of Kingsway group of companies also underwent management and motivational training with Reg Athwal, a world renowned motivational speaker. Unleashing our DNA has been the prime focus for all and this has proven helpful in building ourselves as individuals as well as building a visionary company.
