Phillips Mill, New Hope, PA

This year marks the 21st annual exhibition of photography at Phillips’ Mill. Jurors selected 163 images from approximately 1,000 submitted by a wide range of artists including students, amateurs, and professional artists.

The Phillips’ Mill Community Association believes that photography has become an art form in its own right; therefore, the focus for the Photographic Exhibition is to respect the photographers as artists and to view and appreciate their works as art. Work submitted is judged solely on its strength of personal vision and the artists’ creativity and visual language.

Phillips’ Mill was built in 1756 as a water-powered grist mill and served area farmers for over a century. Artist William Lathrop purchased the property in 1894, and his home and mill studio became the intellectual center of a growing community of artists that formed the nucleus of the original New Hope art colony. The Mill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

In 1929 the Phillips’ Mill Community Association was formed and established an annual juried Art Exhibition displaying the works of local painters and sculptors. The annual juried Photographic Exhibition was inaugurated in 1993.
