The osprey

María Campo

Page 42: Animal Project 5º A

Size, weight and other caracteristics

• The osprey is a vertebrate, it´s a bird the belonging to the vultures group.

• Its scientific name is gypaetus barbatus.• Its weight is between 4,5 and 7 kg.• Its wingspan is between 2,35 and 2,75m.• It has the head, the chest and the legs white,

and the wing brown, black or gray.

Page 43: Animal Project 5º A
Page 44: Animal Project 5º A

Habitats

• In Spain it lives only in Pirineos and Cazorla.• It´s in danger of extinction.• It makes its nest in mountain caves.• When the osprey is 4 months old, it flies for

first time.• During its youth it travels everywhere in

Spain.• When the osprey grows up returns to the

place where it flew for first time to breed.

Page 45: Animal Project 5º A
Page 46: Animal Project 5º A

Diets

• Their food is:1.70% bones 2.25% meat3.5% skin

• It can eat bones of 20 cm

Page 47: Animal Project 5º A

Unique behaviors

• When the bones are too large, the osprey flies with the bone in its beak. Then it drops the bone to the rocks to break it to eat.

Page 48: Animal Project 5º A

Other interesting facts

• It has red eyes, a beard and feathers in its legs.

• When it´s ungry its eyes become redder.• One day somebody saw a young osprey in the

Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. It was there two or three days. Then it continued its travel from Cazorla to Pirineos. The name of this osprey is Tono.

You probably have heard the phrase “wise old owl” before, so you might be surprised to learn that these birds aren't the most intelligent. Their brains are actually considered quite small for their comparative size, and geese, crows, and ravens are all thought to be “smarter.”

Page 52: Animal Project 5º A
Page 53: Animal Project 5º A

There is also the common belief that owls simply "look" smart! Unlike most birds, owl eyes are placed on the front of their heads (versus on the sides) to help them focus on prey when hunting. This wide-eyed glance gives them the impression of thinking really hard when, in reality, they are most likely just thinking about their next meal!

Page 54: Animal Project 5º A

Owls are a group of avian animals that belong to the order Strigiformes, constituting 200 extant species. Most are solitary and nocturnal, with some exceptions (e.g., the Northern Hawk Owl). Owls hunt mostly small mammals, insects, and small birds, although a few species specialize in huntingfish. They are found in all regions of the Earth except Antarctica, most of Greenland and some remote islands.

Page 55: Animal Project 5º A

Though owls are typically solitary, the literary collective noun for a group of owls is a parliament. Owls are characterized by their small beaks and wide faces, and are divided into two families: the typical owls, Strigidae; and the barn-owls, Tytonidae. Despite common belief, owls are not true birds, but rather, they are owls.

Stingrays are a group of rays, which are cartilaginous fishes related to sharks. They are classified of eight families:

Sixgill stingray, deep water stingray, stingarees, round rays, whiptail stingrays, river stingrays, butterfly rays and eagle rays.

Page 62: Animal Project 5º A

Most stingrays have one or more barbed stings (modified from dermal denticles) on the tail, which are used exclusively in self-defense. The stinger may reach a length of approximately 35 cm. And its underside has two grooves with venom glands.

Page 63: Animal Project 5º A

Stingrays are common in coastal tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world, and also includes species found in warmer temperate oceans. And a number of whiptail stingrays (such as the Niger stingray), are restricted to fresh water.
