ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT

FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2011 – 2012

The IQAC meeting was convened on 18.10.2012 by Dr. G. Arutchelvan, Director

and Head, Department of Computer Science and Applications, and Coordinator of IQAC.

The members discussed in detail the role of the Cell, chalked out an action plan for the

academic year 2011-2012 and requested the staff to scrupulously follow the action plan

and implement it in true spirit.

PART – A

The plans of action chalked out by the IQAC at the beginning of the year towards

quality enhancement were:

PLAN OF ACTION

1. To function as an autonomous college from the academic year 2011 – 2012.

2. To constitute new Boards of Studies, Academic Council, Finance Committee and

Governing Body.

3. To convene the meetings of Boards of Studies, Academic Council, Finance

Committee and Governing Body.

4. To form an Examination Cell with a Controller of Examination and supporting

staff to look after question paper setting and conducting examinations under the

Autonomous stream.

5. To convene and conduct meetings of Institutional Animal Ethical Committee

under the guidelines of CPCSEA (Committee for the Purpose and Control and

Supervision of Experiments on Animals) for conducting scientific experiments on

animals.

6. To continue linkages with National Academic Bodies, by continuing the operation

of the Regional field Unit (RFU) for language teaching, with the assistance of

National Testing Services, India (NTS-India), Mysore.

7. To develop the practical skills and employability of students, the different

departments planned to initiate Certificate and Diploma courses.

8. To acquaint with the recent trends and to enhance knowledge of teachers and

students, to organize conferences, seminars, symposia and workshops by inviting

experts from various fields of study, by the Departments of Biochemistry,

Microbiology, Computer Science and Applications, Commerce, Business

Administration, Tamil and English.

9. To improve the analytical skills of students, training in designated laboratories,

hospitals, research institutions and industries was proposed.

10. To enhance employment opportunities, apart from off-campus recruitments, it

was decided to bring in more prospective employers for campus placements.

11. To benefit the community at large, the NSS (National Service Scheme) had on its

agenda blood donation camp and a special camp.

12. To organize training programme, competitions, blood donation camps, screening

camps, veterinary camps and to invite resource persons for various club activities

of the institution.

13. To encourage the staff and students to participate and present papers outside the

campus at various symposia / seminars / conferences and also to publish books

and research papers.

14. To improve extracurricular activities, encourage students to actively participate in

sports.

OUTCOME

AUTONOMOUS STATUS

The College applied for autonomous status in December, 2008. An experts

committee appointed by the University Grants Commission (UGC), under the

chairmanship of Prof. R.P. Kaushik, Former Member, UGC, visited the college on

1st and 2nd July, 2010, and conducted inspection of the infrastructure, facilities and

staff details and submitted its report to the UGC. Based on the committee’s

recommendations, the UGC conferred status of fresh autonomy to the college by

its letter No. F.22-1/2010(AC) dated 23.09.2010 and the Thiruvalluvar University,

Vellore conferred status of fresh autonomy by its letter No. TU/R/A/Conferment

of Autonomy/2011-2012/A.2298 date 06.04.2011.

The college has started functioning as an Autonomous College from the

academic year 2011-2012.

CONSTITUTION OF STATUTORY BODIES

New Boards of Studies, Academic Council, Finance Committee and

Governing Body have been constituted consisting of members as per the

guidelines of the University Grants Commission with the members nominated by

the Thiruvalluvar University Vellore, University Grants Commission, the State

Government and the Management.

FUNCTIONING OF STATUTORY BODIES

The Boards of Studies of all departments met on 16th July, 2011 and

framed the Syllabus, Rules and Regulations for all the Courses. The Academic

Council had its 1st Meeting on 10th August, 2011 and approved the Board of

Studies and the proposals of the Boards of Studies. The Finance Committee had

its 1st Meeting on 23rd, August, 2011, 2nd Meeting on 29th November, 2011, 3rd

Meeting on 14th March, 2012, and 4th Meeting on 11th April, 2012. The Governing

Body had its 1st Meeting on 2nd February, 2012 and 2nd Meeting on 30th April,

2012. The college is functioning as an Autonomous institution with taking into

consideration the resolutions passed by these bodies.

EXAMINATION CELL

An Examination Cell has been formed with a full-time Controller of

Examination Mr. G. Gajendran, and three supporting staff to look after question

paper setting and conducting examinations under the Autonomous stream.

MEETING OF IAEC UNDER CPCSEA

Department of Biochemistry convened and conducted a meeting of

Institutional Animal Ethical Committee (IAEC) of CPCSEA on 6th August, 2012.

Fifteen researchers submitted their research proposals for animal experiments and

the Committee approved their proposals for using rats for animal experiments.

NTS ACTIVITIES:

The National Testing Services (NTS), Mysore, India, has approved the

College, as a Regional Field Unit for the Districts of Vellore, Thiruvannamalai

and Kancheepuram, with effect from 1st July, 2009, for the promotion of language

teaching here. The RFU has conducted Conferences, Guest lectures etc., for the

College Teachers of Vellore, Thiruvannamalai and Kancheepuram districts, on

23rd July, 2011, 30th August, 2011, 1st November, 2011 and 2nd February, 2012,

and organized a Film show on “Karmaveerar Kamarajar”.

CERTIFICATE COURSES

Department of Biochemistry conducted “Diploma in Medical Laboratory

Technology” Course and started “Certificate Course in Electro Cardiography” in

collaboration with Bharat Sevak Samaj, Chennai. Department of Microbiology

conducted Certificate Course in “Medical Laboratory Technology (Pathology)” in

collaboration with Bharat Sevak Samaj, Chennai. Department of Computer

Science and Applications conducted CCNA (CISCO-Certified Network

Administration) Course. Department of Commerce and Business Administration

conducted “Certificate in Accounting Technicians” Course at two levels (Level I

and Level II) in collaboration with ICWAI (The Institute of Costs and Works

Accountants of India), Kolkatta, TALLY, and a Course on Computer in Office

Automation (COA). Hindi language coaching classes are conducted for UG and

PG students with an intake of Forty Two students (31 in Prathmic, 9 in

Madhyama and 2 in Rashtrabasha courses) conducted by Dakshin Bharath Hindi

Prachar Sabha, Chennai. Students are given driving classes and free typewriting

classes.

SEMINARS AND SYMPOSIUM CONDUCTED

To improve co-curricular activities and to acquaint with the recent trends

and enhance knowledge of teachers and students, conferences were organized by

all the Departments. Department of Microbiology organized a National

Symposium on “Microbial Enzymes and Probiotics – ENPRO ’11” on 28th

October, 2011. Department of Computer Science and Applications organized a

National Level Conference on “Data Mining” on 6th March, 2012. Department of

Commerce conducted a National Level Conference on “Issues and Challenges in

Foreign Direct Investment” on 20th March, 2012. Department of Biochemistry

conducted a State Level Workshop on “Analytical Technique - HPLC” on 8th

May, 2012. Academic scholars from various educational institutions and

industries enlightened the students on different issues.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Industrial Visit

About four hundred students of the Biochemistry, Commerce and

Business Administration, Computer Science and Applications and Microbiology

departments visited 15 research institutions and industries, such as Agricutlure

farm, Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, Kalavai, Ashok Leyland, Hosur,

Biogas Plant, Nelvayal, Hatsun Agro Product Ltd., Kancheepuram, HCL Info

System, Chennai, Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, Indian Institute of

Science, Bengaluru, Infosys Limited, Chengalpet, Neyveli Lignite Corporation,

Neyveli, Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Telecom Training Centre (BSNL),

Meenambakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation

Ltd., Sholinganallur Dairy, Chennai, The Dream Zone Technologies, Chennai,

The Electrophoresis Institute - Biotech, Yercaud, The Puducherry Agro Service

and Insdustries Corporation Limited (PASIC), Puducherry, Ultramarine Pigments

Limited, SIPCOT, Ranipet, etc.

Development of Communication Skills

Department of English trained the students for appearing the Proficiency

Test in English (PTE) and Vocabulary Test in English. Seventy four I year

Undergraduate students appeared in the Proficiency Test in English and fourteen

students appeared in the Vocabulary Test in English, conducted by the

Shakespeare Institute of English Studies, Chennai.

Field Visit

The students have visited Yelagiri Hills, Queens Land, Chennai, Javadhu

Hills and Sathanoor Dam.

CAREER GUIDANCE AND PLACEMENT

The placement cell organized on-campus recruitments by M/s. VirBac

Animal Health India Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, and M/s. ALLSEC Technologies Ltd.,

Chennai. Nine students were selected as Customer Care Executive. The placement

cell conducted on-campus recruitment by M/s. AQUAPURE PLUS PVT. LTD.,

Chennai, on 27th March, 2012. Eight students were selected as Sales Executive,

and Seventeen students were selected as Customer Service Executive. In the

Campus Recruitment by M/s. VALLABHA DISTRIBUTION SERVICES (for

HDFC STANDARD LIFE INSURANCE), Chennai, held on 10th and 12th April,

2012, Twenty four students were selected as Telemarketing Executives.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

NSS organized a special camp for 150 volunteers at Mulluvadi, Palla

Mulluvadi and Palyam villages from 24th February to 1st March, 2012. The

volunteers cleaned and whitewashed the school buildings, noon meal scheme

centre, Balvadi, Panchayat office and the local temples, cleared bushes on the

sides of the village roads and around the bore wells, leveled the area to avoid

water stagnation, leveled the roads, planted tree saplings (100 Nos. of Flame of

the Forest) , conducted literary programmes and a survey on “Dropout in School

Education” among the villagers, formed a playground and conducted a free

Medical Camp in association with Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Hospital and

Research Centre, Melmaruvathur, an awareness campaign on diabetes etc. Four

special lectures were also arranged. The NSS units distributed note books, slates,

geometry boxes, pens, pencils, etc, to school children. Also, 50 plates, 50

tumblers, 1 fan and 3 plastic chairs were donated to the Noon Meal Scheme

Centre.

NSS students controlled traffic at Melmaruvathur, during Irumudi festival,

on 1st January, 2012, and during the founder president His Holiness AMMA’s

birthday functions on 3rd March, 2012.

The Red Ribbon Club conducted a programme on “Awareness of

HIV/AIDS through Folk Media” on 20th September, 2011, and organized a Blood

Donation Camp with the collaboration of Christian Medical College Hospital,

Vellore, on 21st January, 2012, in which 50 units of blood were donated by the

students.

Student Volunteers of Youth Red Cross participated in one-day district

level Study Camp of YRC at D.K.M. College for Women, Vellore, on 27th July,

2011, and in 62nd Anniversary of Geneva Convention Day, organized by Red

Cross Society of D.K.M. College for Women, Vellore, on 5th August, 2011, and

by Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu branch, on 18th August, 2011. On 10th

October, 2011, YRC collected Rs. 3800 as Hundi Collection, one of the maximum

fund among other Arts & Science Colleges in Vellore District.

The Department of Biochemistry organized a programme for Screening of

Anemia for school children at Government Girls Higher Secondary School,

Perungattur and Government Higher Secondary School, Kavanur, on 30th January,

2012, in which about 160 students benefited, and also conducted a Blood

Grouping Programme for school children at Panchayat Union Primary School,

Gajambarpettai, Kalavai, on 15th March, 2012, in which about 65 students were

tested.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

The club activities of the college include: Consumer Club conducted an

Awareness Progemme on Food Adulterants on 24th December, 2012. The

Coordinator of the Consumer Club, Mrs. S. Kavitha, received the Best Service

Award, from the Collector Mr. Ajay Yadav, at the World Consumer Day function

at Vellore, on 28th March, 2012. Consumer Club also conducted a Guest Lecture

on “Consumer Protection Act” by Prof. A. Senthil Kumar, Head, Department of

Business Administration, Adhiparasakthi College of Engineering, G.B. Nagar,

Kalavai, on 22nd March, 2012. The students, Ms. J. Anupriya, Ms. R. Nivetha and

Ms. L .Jayagandhi, I M.Sc, Biochemistry, got the I, II and III Prizes respectively

in the Elocution competition and Mr. S. Vijay and Mr. J. Santhosh Kumar, I B.Sc,

Biochemistry, got the I and II Prizes respectively in the Essay competition on

“Consumer Awareness and Education” on 28th March, 2012.

The Women’s Cell conducted Cooking Competition as a part of Deepavali

Celebrations 24th October, 2011. The Cell also organized International Women’s

Day Celebrations on 3rd March, 2012, with a Guest Lecture on “Women’s

Welfare” by Mrs. Shanthi Manikandan, Rotarian, Inner Wheel President, Ranipet,

and a Training Programme on “Embos Painting” by Mrs, Manikavalli, Crafts

Teacher, Arcot.

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

One book and fifteen research papers have been authored by the college

staff and students.

Many students from various disciplines participated in seminars,

symposia, conferences and workshops outside campus and won prizes.

Department of Tamil conducted Inter-Departmental Poetry Competition

on 7th July, 2011, Inter-Departmental Drawing Competition on 20th August, 2011

and an Inter-Collegiate Elocution Competition on 1st October, 2011. The

Department of Business Administration conducted Inter-Departmental Quiz

Programme on 1st October, 2011.

Twelve students participated in the Essay competition conducted by

Vidiyal Kalai Ilakkiya Mandram, Chennai, on 12th August, 2011. Mr. A.N. Raja

Mohamed, II M.C.A., won the I Prize in the Drawing Competition held at

C. Abdul Hakeem College, Melvisharam. Ms. S. Subashini, II M.Sc. (Applied

Microbiology) secured II Prize in the Essay competition conducted by Tamil

Nadu Murpokku Eluththalrgal – Kalaignarkal Sangam, on 16th Novemebr, 2011.

Ms. N. Divya, II M.Sc., won II Prize in the JAM Competition conducted by

Auxilium College, Vellore. The student team of Ms. N. Divya and Mr. C.

Praveen, II M.Sc. and Mr. S. Nithyanadham, III B.Sc. won a consolation prize in

Quiz competition conducted by JCI (Metro), Vellore. In the Competitions

conducted by JCI (Metro), Vellore, on 20th August, 2011, the College Students

participated in various categories and got I Prizes in Singing and

Bharathanattiyam, III Prize in Solo Dance and Consolation Prize in Quiz

competitions. In the Competitions held at Marudhar Kesari Jain College,

Vaniyambadi, on 29th September, 2011, the College students participated in

various cultural events and got I Prizes in Solo Singing and Pencil Sketch and III

Prize in Pair Dance.

Ms. N. Divya, II M.Sc., won III Prize in Paper presentation and Ms. J.

Anupriya and Ms. R. Nivetha, I M.Sc., won III Prize in Poster presentation in the

National Level Seminar on “Recent Trends in Phytotherapy”, conducted by

Islamiah College, Vanimyambadi, on 15th and 16th February, 2012. Ms. J.

Anupriya and Ms. R. Nivetha, I M.Sc., won II Prize in Poster presentation in the

National Level Seminar on “Herbal Remedies and Health Management”,

conducted by Indo – American College, Cheyyar, on 3rd March, 2012. Ms. J.

Anupriya and Ms. R. Nivetha, I M.Sc., Ms. S. Srilekha, II B.B.A. and Mr. S.

Noorudeen, II M.C.A., won I prize in the Inter-collegiate Quiz competition

conducted by Adhiparasakthi Teachers Training Institute, G.B. Nagar, Kalavai, on

20th March, 2012. Ms. S. Rajammal and Ms. C. Suriya, III B.C.A., won III Prize

in Paper presentation at D.K.M. College for Women, Vellore, on 20th January,

2012.

EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Three students participated in Forest Film Festival at Periyar University,

Salem. Eighteen students participated in Cultural activities during the Founder

President His Holiness AMMA’s birthday celebrations at Melmaruvathur, on 29th

February, 2012.

Onam was celebrated in the College Campus on 9th September, 2011.

Deepavali was celebrated in the College Campus on 24th October, 2011.

Christmas, New Year and Pongal were celebrated on 27th December, 2011.

Five students were selected to represent University Teams in Tournaments

[Badminton - Ms. C.P. Aishwarya, II B.Com.; Boxing – Mr. J. Hemachander,

M.Phil. (Microbiology); Foot Ball – Mr. J. Srinivasan, III B.B.A.; Hand Ball –

Mr. E. Logesh, III B.C.A.; and Kabbadi – Mr. A. Anbalagan, III B.Sc.

(Biochemistry)]. Ten students secured Prizes in Inter-Divisional Tournaments in

Badminton, Boxing, Cricket, Foot Ball, Hand Ball and Kabbadi. The College

hosted Thiruvalluvar University Inter-Collegiate Badminton and Table Tennis

Tournaments for Women on 16th August, 2011; and Thiruvalluvar University

Inter-Divisional Hand Ball Tournament for Men on 29th and 30th August, 2011.

PART - B

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution:

The vision of the institution is to mould youth, to combat changing challenges and

to serve global community, with professional competence and spiritual commitments to

excellence. To achieve this, the mission is to provide quality, value – based and career

oriented education to students, especially rural young men and women, who will be

agents of social transformation and global development through their selfless and

spiritual service. Being the first self-financing institution started in rural Tamil Nadu in

1988, the development of the institution in terms of infrastructure, curriculum and faculty

has created a magnificent atmosphere conducive for higher education for rural youth here

till date.

In this regard the goal of the Institution is to obtain autonomous status for the

college from the University Grants Commission. The college applied for autonomous

status in December, 2008. An experts committee, appointed by the University Grants

Commission (UGC) under the chairmanship of Prof. R.P. Kaushik, Former Member,

UGC, visited the college on 1st and 2nd July, 2010, and conducted inspection of the

infrastructure, facilities and staff details and submitted its report to the UGC. Based on

the committee’s recommendations, the UGC conferred status of fresh autonomy to the

college by its letter No. F.22-1/2010(AC) dated 23.09.2010 and the Thiruvalluvar

University, Vellore conferred status of fresh autonomy by its letter No.

TU/R/A/Conferment of Autonomy/2011-2012/A.2298 date 06.04.2011.

The college has started functioning as an Autonomous College from the academic

year 2011-2012. The newly constituted Boards of Studies met on 16th July, 2011 and

framed the Syllabus, Rules and Regulations for all the Courses. The newly constituted

Academic Council had its 1st Meeting on 10th August, 2011 and approved the Board of

Studies, the proposals of the Boards of Studies regarding the Syllabi and the Rules &

Regulations for admission of students from the academic year 2011-2012, and the Panel

of Examiners. The Finance Committee had its 1st Meeting on 23rd, August, 2011, 2nd

Meeting on 29th November, 2011, 3rd Meeting on 14th March, 2012 and 4th Meeting on

11th April, 2012. The Governing Body convened its 1st Meeting on 2nd February, 2012

and 2nd Meeting on 30th April, 2012. The Boards of Studies met again on 4th May, 2012

to frame the Syllabus for the II year for all the Courses.

2. New academic programmes initiated (UG and PG):

M.Phil. (Commerce) has been introduced during the academic year 2011-2012.

The college has applied to University for the introduction of B.Sc. (Maths) from the next

academic year.

3. Innovation in curricular design and transaction:

As the institution has become functioning as an autonomous institution from this

academic year, the Boards of Studies of the various departments have improved and

framed new syllabi for most of the courses.

4. Inter-disciplinary programmes started:

Department of Biochemistry is continuing “Medical Laboratory Technology” and

“Electro Cardiography” Certificate Courses and Department of Microbiology is

continuing “Medical Laboratory Technology” Course in collaboration with Bharat Sevak

Samaj, Chennai. Department of Commerce and Business Administration is continuing

“Computer in Office Automation” Course. Hindi coaching classes are continued for all

UG students, conducted by Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, T. Nagar.

As per the CBCS (Choice-Based Credit System), the Departments have opted for

various inter-disciplinary courses for the students.

Department of Biochemistry offers Diagnostic Biochemistry – I and Diagnostic

Biochemistry – II for II B.Sc. Microbiology and Nutrition in Health and

Diseases for II M.Sc. Applied Microbiology.

Department of Microbiology offers Computer Applications in Biology and

Bioethics for II B.Sc. Biochemistry and Herbal Technology for II M.Sc.

5. Examination reforms implemented:

An Examination Cell has been formed with a full-time Controller of Examination

Mr. G. Gajendran, and three supporting staff – Mr. S. Nambi, Assistant Professor in

Computer Science and Applications, Mrs. S. Malarkkodi, Assistant Professor in Tamil

and Mr. M. Vasudevan, Junior Assistant, to look after question paper setting and

conducting examinations under the Autonomous stream. The Academic Council

approved the Panel of Examiners for all the departments, and questions papers for the

End semester examinations were prepared and scrutinized by the members of these panel.

The Examination cell purchased Copier and Duplicating machine and Stationeries for

conducting End Semester Examinations under the Autonomous Stream.

The Examination Cell conducted End Semester Examinations from 7th December,

2011. An External Additional Superintendent was appointed for the Theory

Examinations. The photos of the candidates are included along with the name and register

number in the Attendance Sheet for the End Semester Examinations. External Examiners

were invited for central paper valuation. The Examination Cell has planned to include

the photos of the candidates in the Mark Sheets of the End Semester Examinations. It

conducted Practical and Theory Examinations of Thiruvalluvar University. The results of

the End Semester Examination for UG and PG course were published on 3rd February,

2012. The Examination Cell conducted Even Semester Practical Examinations from 9th

April, 2012, and Even Semester Theory Examinations from 23rd April, 2012.

many awareness programmes. White washing of community buildings, donation of sports

goods and stationeries to school children were carried out by different clubs.

NSS organized a special camp for 150 volunteers at Mulluvadi, Palla Mulluvadi

and Palyam villages from 24th February to 1st March, 2012. The volunteers cleaned and

whitewashed the school buildings, noon meal scheme centre, Balvadi, Panchayat office

and the local temples, cleared bushes on the sides of the village roads and around the bore

wells, leveled the area to avoid water stagnation, leveled the roads, planted tree saplings

(100 Nos. of Flame of the Forest) , conducted literary programmes and a survey on

“Dropout in School Education” among the villagers, formed a playground and conducted

a free Medical Camp in association with Melmaruvathur Adhiparasakthi Hospital and

Research Centre, Melmaruvathur, an awareness campaign on diabetes etc. Four special

lectures were also arranged – “Cattle and Human Life”, by Dr. N. Babu, M.V.Sc.,

Assitant Professor, Animal Husbandry, Adhiparasakthi Agricultural College, G.B.,

Nagar, Kalavai; “Development of Mental Health by Yoga”, by Dr. G. Arutchelvan,

Director, Department of Computer Science and Applications, Adhiparasakthi College of

Arts & Science, Kalavai; “Diabetes Diagnosis Camp”, by Prof. Mrs. M. Jayanthi, Head,

Department of Biochemistry, Adhiparasakthi College of Arts & Science, Kalavai. The

NSS units distributed note books, slates, geometry boxes, pens, pencils, etc, to school

children. Also, 50 plates, 50 tumblers, 1 fan and 3 plastic chairs were donated to the

Noon Meal Scheme Centre.

NSS students controlled traffic at Melmaruvathur, during Irumudi festival, on 1st

January, 2012, and during the founder president His Holiness AMMA’s birthday

functions on 3rd March, 2012.

The Red Ribbon Club conducted a programme on “Awareness of HIV/AIDS

through Folk Media” on 20th September, 2011. Red Ribbon Club organized a Blood

Donation Camp with the collaboration of Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, on

21st January, 2012, in which 50 units of blood were donated by the students.

Student Volunteers of Youth Red Cross participated in one-day district level

Study Camp of YRC at D.K.M. College for Women, Vellore, on 27th July, 2011. They

also participated in the 62nd Anniversary of Geneva Convention Day, organized by Red

Cross Society of D.K.M. College for Women, Vellore, on 5th August, 2011, and the 62nd

Anniversary of Geneva Convention Day, organized by the Indian Red Cross Society,

Tamil Nadu branch, on 18th August, 2011. On 10th October, 2011, YRC collected Rs.

3800 as Hundi Collection, one of the maximum fund among other Arts & Science

Colleges in Vellore District.

The Department of Biochemistry organized a Programme for Screening of

Anemia for school children at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Perungattur

and Government Higher Secondary School, Kavanur, on 30th January, 2012, in which

about 160 students benefited. The Department of Biochemistry also conducted a Blood

Grouping Programme for school children at Panchayat Union Primary School,

Gajambarpettai, Kalavai, on 15th March, 2012, in which about 65 students were tested.

Consumer Club conducted an Awareness Progemme on Food Adulterants on 24th

December, 2012. Mrs. S. Kavitha, Coordinator of the Consumer Club received the Best

Service Award, from the Collector Mr. Ajay Yadav, at the World Consumer Day function

at Vellore, on 28th March, 2012. Consumer Club also conducted a Guest Lecture on

“Consumer Protection Act” by Prof. A. Senthil Kumar, Head, Department of Business

Administration, Adhiparasakthi College of Engineering, G.B. Nagar, Kalavai, on 22nd

March, 2012. And the students, Ms. J. Anupriya, Ms. R. Nivetha and Ms. L .Jayagandhi,

I M.Sc, Biochemistry, got the I, II and III Prizes respectively in the Elocution competition

and Mr. S. Vijay and Mr. J. Santhosh Kumar, I B.Sc, Biochemistry, got the I and II Prizes

respectively in the Essay competition on “Consumer Awareness and Education” on 28th

March, 2012.

The Women’s Cell conducted Cooking Competition as a part of Deepavali

Celebrations 24th October, 2011. The Cell also organized International Women’s Day

Celebrations on 3rd March, 2012, with a Guest Lecture on “Women’s Welfare” by Mrs.

Shanthi Manikandan, Rotarian, Inner Wheel President, Ranipet, and a Training

Programmed on “Embos Painting” by Mrs, Manikavalli, Crafts Teacher, Arcot.

In order to cater to the needs of students, college bus facilities has been

increased.

27. Technology upgradation:

The broad band internet services with M/s. Sify have been renewed and are being

distributed through Wi-Fi technology throughout the campus. 25 CPUs with i3 processors

have been purchased at a cost of Rs. 4,05,000, and 30 Tubular batteries (for uninterrupted

power supply) have been purchased at a cost of Rs. 3,80,000 for the UG Computer lab.

28. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and students:

A separate internet lab with 25 systems is functioning for both teachers and

students, and is accessible throughout the working hours. To facilitate the usage of the

Internet lab, one hour has been allotted for all the final year UG and PG students.

29. Financial aid to students:

30. Activities and support from the Alumni Association:

Alumni Meet was conducted in the college campus on 26th January, 2012, in

which about 350 old students participated. The alumni shared their experiences and

promised to help the current students. Alumni in the marketing profession took classes on

personality development. Old students in the diagnostics division have helped staff and

students in training instrumentation. Alumni working in Research and Development were

able to accommodate students for summer training. Alumni paid one semester tuition fee

for six final year UG students (one student / UG course).

31. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association:

Parents-Teacher Association meetings were conducted on 14th July, 2011 and 24th

August, 2011. Feedback obtained from parents regarding the academic performance of

students, campus cleanliness and general amenities are discussed. Remedial measures are

accordingly prescribed.

32. Health Services:

A hospital (G.B. Hospital) is functioning in the college campus from 1st February,

2011, to provide free medical service to the students and neighbouring villagers. An

ambulance has been permanently stationed in the campus to meet emergency situations.

Freezer box for deceased is also freely provided for the nearby villages.

33. Performance in sports activities:

Five students were selected to represent University Teams in Tournaments

[Badminton - Ms. C.P. Aishwarya, II B.Com.; Boxing – Mr. J. Hemachander, M.Phil.

(Microbiology); Foot Ball – Mr. J. Srinivasan, III B.B.A.; Hand Ball – Mr. E. Logesh, III

B.C.A.; and Kabbadi – Mr. A. Anbalagan, III B.Sc. (Biochemistry)].

Ten students secured Prizes in Inter-Divisional Tournaments in Badminton,

Boxing, Cricket, Foot Ball, Hand Ball and Kabbadi.

The College hosted Thiruvalluvar University Inter-Collegiate Badminton and

Table Tennis Tournaments for Women on 16th August, 2011; and Thiruvalluvar

University Inter-Divisional Hand Ball Tournament for Men on 29th and 30th August,

2011.

In the Thiruvalluvar University examinations held in May, 2011, the College

students secured 23 University ranks including three Gold medals. The Gold medal

V.D. Sivaranjani (M.Sc. Applied Microbiology). The four 2nd Rank holders are Ms. S.

Nithya (M.Sc. Biochemistry), Ms. R. Sangeetha (M.Sc. Applied Microbiology), Ms. J.

Anupriya (B.Sc. Biochemistry) and Ms. I. Rasika (B.Sc. Microbiology). 3rd Rank was

Twelve students participated in the Essay competition conducted by Vidiyal Kalai

Ilakkiya Mandram, Chennai, on 12th August, 2011. Mr. A.N. Raja Mohamed, II M.C.A.,

won the I Prize in the Drawing Competition held at C. Abdul Hakeem College,

Melvisharam. Ms. S. Subashini, II M.Sc. (Applied Microbiology) secured II Prize in the

Essay competition conducted by Tamil Nadu Murpokku Eluththalrgal – Kalaignarkal

Sangam, on 16th Novemebr, 2011. Ms. N. Divya, II M.Sc., won II Prize in the JAM

Competition conducted by Auxilium College, Vellore. The student team of Ms. N. Divya

and Mr. C. Praveen, II M.Sc. and Mr. S. Nithyanadham, III B.Sc. won a consolation prize

in Quiz competition conducted by JCI (Metro), Vellore. In the Competitions conducted

by JCI (Metro), Vellore, on 20th August, 2011, the College Students participated in

various categories and got I Prizes in Singing and Bharathanattiyam, III Prize in Solo

Dance and Consolation Prize in Quiz competitions. In the Competitions held at Marudhar

Kesari Jain College, Vaniyambadi, on 29th September, 2011, the College students

participated in various cultural events and got I Prizes in Solo Singing and Pencil Sketch

and III Prize in Pair Dance.

36. Activities of the Guidance and Counselling Unit:

Students are constantly monitored for their psychological disturbances, emotional

imbalances and healthy inter- and intra-relationships within genders and corrective

measures are suggested. Chronic health and physical problems are reported to their

parents. Some of the grievances addressed by the management are provision of first-aid

box in the Women’s Cell and Physical Education room and ambulance facility.

40. Linkages developed with National / International, Academic / Research

bodies:

The National Testing Services, India (NTS-India), Mysore, has approved the

College, as a Regional Field Unit (RFU) for the Districts of Vellore, Thiruvannamalai

and Kancheepuram. The RFU conducts programmes such as group discussion,

orientation programme and workshop. The Tamil Department looks after the functions of

the RFU.

The college library has subscribed to NLIST Programme of INFLIBNET,

Ahmedabad, with 163 Staff and Students getting username and password, for accessing

this facility. Linkage to DELNET (Developing Library Network) has been renewed with

annual subscription.

Final year B.Com, B.B.A., B.C.A. and B.Sc. Computer Science and first year

B.Sc. Biochemistry and Microbiology students are trained in type writing.

With the autonomous status of the Institution, the syllabi for the second year

courses are under preparation and will be placed for approval by the Boards of Studies

and Academic council. Examination Cell is being strengthened for the purpose of

conducting Semester Examinations under the Autonomous Scheme.

PART - C

Details of the plans of the institution for the next year:

Futuristic objectives of the institution are planned ahead, providing scope and

space for timely execution. Towards fulfilling the same, the departments are requested to

project and place a plan for the current academic year, keeping in mind the vision and

mission of the institution. To improve the employability of the students, the Departments

have been instructed to prepare syllabi for the Autonomous Institution that will

concentrate more on increasing the skills of the students.

It has been proposed to apply for reaccreditation with NAAC.

It has been planned to start B.Sc. (Mathematics) course from this academic year.

Department of Commerce and Business Administration has plans to introduce

Short Hand course and to continue TALLY, CAT, ICAI and COA courses for

undergraduate students. Department of Biochemistry has proposed to continue DMLT

and ECG courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, Department of

Microbiology has proposed to continue DMLT course for both undergraduate and

postgraduate students, and Department of Computer Science and Applications has

proposed to coach final year postgraduate students for UGC-NET examinations, final

year undergraduate students for TANCET examinations and to provide CCNA and

Animation courses. It has been proposed to continue to impart Typewriting course and

Hindi and Yoga coaching classes for all undergraduate students.

Department of Tamil has plans to train students on Document writing, Proof

reading and higher level translation. Department of English has proposed to conduct

Communication skills classes and to continue Business English Certificate (BEC),

Proficiency Test in English (PTE), Employability Skill Test (EST), and Test in Effective

Communication (TEC) coaching classes for undergraduate students utilizing the new

language laboratory constructed. To encourage more number of students to do research, it

has been proposed to continue coaching classes for students appearing CSIR-NET,

GATE and ICMR examinations. There is also a plan to continue coaching students for

State and Central Public Services Examinations.

A proposal has been submitted to invite product and application specialists from

industries, to train the faculty. Staff will be continued to encourage participating in the

seminars / symposia / conferences / orientation or refresher courses to update their

knowledge and to attend workshops to gain skills in new techniques. Institution will

continue its support to staff pursuing higher studies. The departments will continue to

organize national level seminars / symposia / conferences / workshops and approach the

central funding agencies for sponsorship. Departments will be encouraged to apply for

projects from funding agencies and to sign MOUs (Memorandum of Understanding) with

research institutions and industries to take up collaborative research programmes.

Departments in association with various clubs will continue to involve themselves

in carrying out fresh programmes such as conducting classes for school students,

fortnightly medical camps in neighbouring villages, dental screening camp, conducting

intra-collegiate and inter-collegiate cultural competitions, certificate programme on

Crafts, counseling for girl students, oratorical competition, awareness programme on

women self-employment, free blood-grouping for school students, health awareness

programme, arranging eco-field trips, besides existing programmes, such as blood

donation camp, career guidance programme, first-aid awareness programme, AIDS

awareness programme, one-week NSS special camp, women’s day celebrations.

To improve library services, it has been proposed to increase the use of

INFLIBNET services to students. Plans are put forth to purchase new books worth Rs,

1,00,000.00 and to subscribe journals worth Rs. 50,000.00. A proposal has been drawn to

set up an Audio Visual room, and to increase the number of computers in the library.

Head of the Departments are advised to obtain assessment of teachers from the

students and to take remedial actions based on the student feedback.

A proposal to construct a gym and to start coaching camps for sports and athletics

is under consideration.

Regular meetings and support activities are planned to strengthen the Alumni,

Parent-Teacher association and the Guidance and Counselling unit.

A proposal has been drawn to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with a

reputed organization for imparting Soft Skills and Computer Operations to final year

students to increase their employability. It has been proposed to invite more prospective

employers for campus placements. A core team has been formed to initiate interaction

with industries to ascertain their requirements and to train the students accordingly.

Career guidance, communication skills and personality development programmes are

planned for the benefit of students.

The staff and students will continue to be encouraged to participate and present

their papers in various symposia / seminars / conferences and to publish books and

research papers. The students will be encouraged to undergo training and to do project

work in research institutions, industries and hospitals. Experts will be invited to deliver

lectures. Students will be encouraged to visit research institutions and industries to learn

more about recent developments in their field of interest. Group Insurance scheme is

planned for the benefit of students.
