Message from the Chairman

Baluchistan has been neglected since long in terms of

socioeconomic development and mainstreaming of human

potential despite the fact that the province has the best human

and material resources. Cultural, social practices, lack of

quality education infrastructure and poverty factors interface

with each to exclude children living in poverty from their right

to education. Parental perception about high opportunity cost

of education in Balochistan is another factor that keeps a child

away from education institutes at the province.

The interplay of poverty and lack of quality education

institutes is depriving 70% of school age going children from their right to education in the

province. Balochistan is trapped into vicious circle of poverty and illiteracy both. Lack of

quality education institutes and poverty both are pushing youth of the province into spheres

of misfortune.

Under the above-mentioned scenario, the targeted poverty alleviation program that means

free/subsidized quality education for poor leading to stable jobs leading to higher incomes is

the only solution. The scenario at Balochistan required a two-pronged intervention that may

address issues of poverty and lack of quality education both.

We are thankful to government of Balochistan for helping us to lay down foundation of an

institute at Ziarat, Balochistan that addresses both these concerns simultaneously. The core

purpose behind establishment of Al Hijrah Residential School and College Ziarat was to

provide free of cost quality education, character building and nurturing for professional

excellence to talented children of poorest households in Baluchistan who otherwise are not

able to avail equivalent educational opportunities. Presently 251 students are enrolled at the

campus and 237 students have graduated successfully. Since its establishment AHST is doing

its best to provide quality education to these students in a professional and dignified manner

without compromising the values of independence and impartiality in selection of the

students and their upbringing at the campus.

The annual report covers few aspects of the progress made during the year 2017-18 by

AHST. I would like to congratulate all staff of AHST, students and contributing alumni for

their respective roles and obligations.

Finally, I would like to thank all our donors especially Turkiye Diayanet Wakfi for their

continuous financial and technical support. Let me assure them that their contributions to Al

Hijrah is paving a path from a good school to good job and good society. Their contribution

is steering out youth and families from vicious circle of poverty through sustainable means

of education. I am hopeful that in coming future they will see the ripple effect of their

contributions in the shape inspired youth of Balochistan with aspirations to get and

complete higher education.

Message from the CEO

It is my immense pleasure to present the annual report of Al-

Hijrah Schools Trust for the year 2017-18. Alhamdullilah, this

year was another successful milestone in the history of Al

Hijrah’s struggle to help children living in poverty through

education. This year the 14th batch of 52 students got enrolled

to the institute with the hope that instructions and learning

environment at the school will turn them into agent of

change for their society and families struggling in the most

impoverished living conditions of the country. Another

success that added to our sense of achievement is the

graduation of our 9th batch (14 student) enrolled in 2012. The

most encouraging part of this year’ accomplishments is the improvement in learning

outcomes. 64% of our intermediate students secured A+, A and B grades in Board exams

while 80% of our students in class 10th acquired A+ and A and B grades. I must attribute this

improvement to inside classroom struggle of faculty and especially school leadership

working beyond working hours for improvement of school learning environment.

Our 251 formally networked alumni members are aspiring for better future in higher

education and professional fields. Till now 39 of alumni members have become earning

hand for their families and are contributing to society as serving professionals in field of

medical, engineering, armed forces, civil administration and academia.

We are thankful to of Siddique Leather (pvt) ltd, with whom support we successfully

completed residential facility for principal (School Leadership). Commitment of Akhuwat

Foundation for construction of multipurpose hall is another hope in areas of physical

infrastructure development of the project. This year several higher education institutes

agreed to provide scholarship to our graduates for higher education.

The most exciting part of this year journey was nomination and selection of Al Hijrah for

prestigious Balochistan Excellence Award from government of Balochistanas

acknowledgment of Al Hijrah services in field of academia and education.

We would remain thankful to all philanthropists, educationists and social activist that

invigorated us with their visit to Al Hijrah during the year. I on the behalf of parents and

communities of children enrolled at Al Hijrah would like to thank all our donors especially

Turkiye Diayanet Wakfi their technical and financial support during the year.

strong prospects for admission in higher education institutes and entry in jobs market. Earlier

1 student from each district was selected for enrollment in class 7. The intake is being increased

to 2 students per district in each new class.

Upon availability of resources, AHST aims to deepen the outreach by taking students from

each tehsil of the province and establish similar kind of institutes in other deprived areas of

Balochistan.

Introduction

During 1988, Mr. Abdul Karim Saqib, a Birmingham based Pakistani enthusiast and

educationist along with a group of other passionate Muslims of Pakistani origin laid the

foundations of the Al Hijrah Schools Trust in Birmingham, United Kingdom. The trust

aimed to provide contemporary quality education with a rich blend of Islamic values,

principles and ethics with a special focus on connecting children of Pakistani diaspora with

the ideological basis of Pakistan.

In Pakistan, Al-Hijrah Schools Trust was registered in 2002 with a broader objective of

piloting value centric quality education programme with prime focus on talented children of

very low-income households especially who don’t have access to quality education.

Believing in the social, political and economic impact of quality education and character

building for a societal transformation, a well thought education system on non-commercial

basis was designed. Instead of sticking to typical approach of providing rote learning in

middle and higher levels for better grades, the envisaged approach and strategy included

development of thinking skills and curiosity, above par knowledge and competencies,

mindfulness of civic sense and obligations, group behavior through campus culture of

engagement, personality development and creating a strong urge to learn, adopt and

demonstrate core values of patriotism and principles of Islam.

This system required tremendous teaching capacities, physical infrastructure and financial

resources. This model provides meaningful and career-oriented education to bright and

talented students of extremely low-income households in a residential setup on free of cost

basis. Students in entry class i.e. Grade 7 are selected from each of the district based on their

income profile and performance in entry test.

This all was to be done through providing state of the art institutional infrastructure with

competent faculty, learning atmosphere, provision of boarding, lodging and other

Annual Report 2017-18

educational needs to assist children focus on education and above all the coaching and

engagement of alumni until they get achieve their career goals.

Paving towards achieving these dream objectives was not less than an ordeal especially

when there was no significant financial arrangement to take a start. Br. Abdul Karim Saqib

reached out as many prospected stakeholders as he could to obtain resources to establish the

minimum set up.

As startup and pilot, AHST started from Baluchistan by establishing Al-Hijrah Residential

School & College in 2004 for grade 7-12 in Ziarat, a town associated with Founder of

Pakistan. In this pilot, AHST is successful in transforming raw potential of Baluchistan into

well groomed, confident, visionary and self-reliant alumni, many of whom are in prestigious

careers like civil service, doctors, engineers, armed forces, education etc. The processes,

quality standards of education, attitudinal reflections of the graduates and the prestigious

careers held by many alumni members gave AHST distinction in education sector in the

province as well as at country level.

The financial arrangements for this cause were only possible because of the generosity and

helpfulness of so many worthy individuals and organizations who believed in AHST’s

philosophy, integrity and commitment.

Cooperation Agreement with Turkiye Diyanet Vakfi

Since its inception in 2004, Al Hijrah’s leadership is striving for sustainable financial

conditions where larger community of stakeholder may support the cause. The most

positive and effective development in this regard was cooperation agreement of TDV with

AHST in 2014. Since the establishment of cooperation agreement, TDV has helped us on

many fronts including financial, technical and leadership support. TDV support has help us

in winning confidence of local donors that enabled us to develop partnership with

philanthropic organizations and companies with CSR programs. Many projects were

completed including principal residence and two dormitories for students through these

local donors. Following TDV advice for replacement of school leadership and enhancement

in faculty plus provision of missing facilities at AHRSC by TDV has helped in improving

learning outcomes of student. Proportion of exceptional and excellent grades is rising since

the establishment of cooperation agreement with TDV.

TDV Technical support has helped us in standardizing our management and financial

systems. TDV support has helped us to move from manual recording to computer based

systems in admirative and financial matters. Through this partnership Al Hijrah has

developed IT based systems to track and trace students learning outcomes, alumni status,

financial matters and donations.

TDV support has helped us in winning local level recognition of our services. The genuine

work that Al Hijrah carried out with technical and financial support of TDV has helped us in

winning Baluchistan excellence award in August 2017. This is highly prestigious award by

provincial government of Balochistan in recognition of our services in field of education and

academia.

Al-Hijrah Alumni Pakistan

Al-Hijrah Alumni Pakistan (AAP) was established in 2010 to provide the graduates a

platform where they can share their ideas, discuss networking and other opportunities,

develop communication and leadership abilities and showcase their abilities and potential.

Since its inception, every year new graduates are becoming part of the association and this

circle is increasing its volume each year. AAP has its own governing body, electoral process

and SOPs. The AAP Cabinet is selected for each year where president and general secretary

are being elected for the year. AAP conducts annual activities for networking and

communication and different events are organized across the country. The other members of

the cabinet perform their respective roles of management and coordination.

AAP publishes its yearbook on regular basis which includes briefs and profiles of each batch

of alumni along with contact and current activities whether ongoing higher education,

business or profession.

Alumni Progression Path

To determine effectiveness of instructions at college and accordingly achievements of the

graduates and for the purpose tracing, cultivating and staying connected with our

graduates, Al Hijrah Schools Trust with support of alumni members developed a database

of Alumni. The database contains data and information of alumni members, their fields of

specialization and career pathways.

We are glad to share that, although Al Hijrah at campus caters educational needs of children

living in poverty from Class 7 to Class 12th, the spirit of progression, opens new doors and

avenues for them in acquiring higher education and attaining prestigious position in

professional fields. The below graph shows and trace trends in Alumni aspirations. The

extoling and admiring aspect of picture is that majority of members successfully secured

seats in medical and engineering which are most demanding technical specializations in

higher education in Pakistan. The another most encouraging depiction in trend analysis is

the presence of our alumni in almost every fields of specialization. The data shows that

trend of student joining management and natural sciences is rising with relatively stable

trend in field of medical and engineering. (See Annex 1)

Improvement in Physical infrastructure

a. Construction of Principal Residence

Al Hijrah Residential School and College Ziarat Campus lies in hard to reach area of

Baluchistan. The major challenge for the trust was to attract and retain quality leadership at

the college. As major focus of the trust is building character and creating enabling

environment to nurture leadership traits, the initiative of constructing principal residence

was taken with a motive of attracting and retaining quality leadership at the campus.

A full-fledged residence facility consisting of two rooms, lounge, drawing room, three

washrooms and one kitchen was constructed through funding by Siddique Leather Works, a

local business company under its CSR component. Almost 80% of the work has been

completed and for the remaining 20%, a proposal along with detailed BOQ has been

submitted. The facility will assist direct supervision from senior staff (principal) to the

students away from parental supervision. The ultimate result we expect is the young

generation instilled with quality life skills besides having conventional knowledge
