Dear Friends,

...inspires our mission

Pride in our Library...

2015 Board of Directors Friends Staff

As the nonprofit partner of our world-class Hennepin County Library, Friends of HCL is an active community of supporters whose mission is to

enrich the resources and enhance the potential of the Library.

Every day, our Library is making a powerful and lasting difference.

In recognition of your vital support, we are delighted to share Friends of the Hennepin County Library’s 2015 Annual Report, highlighting the important difference that Friends members are making possible.

It’s a difference that begins with 41 buildings brought fully to life by dedicated people, transformative programs and essential services. These spaces are community hubs where people young, old, and any age in-between, can come to learn more, dream big, and open doors to the future.

Visit any one of our bustling neighborhood libraries, and you will clearly see how these vibrant spaces come alive with Friends-funded resources to brighten days, strengthen communities, and improve lives.

From powerful youth programs like Homework Help and Summer Learning… to innovative “pop up” libraries in the Cedar Riverside community… to At Home outreach to seniors and homebound individuals… your support helps our Library make the wonders of learning and discovery more accessible to all.

Thank you for extending the promise of our Library into every corner of our county and beyond.

Your Powerful Impact

Building & Preserving Our Treasured Collection

Empowering Teens Through STEM-based Learning

TWO WAYS YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE• Your donations help buy more books and other popular resources,

decreasing wait times, increasing circulation, and diversifying titles.• Funding from Friends like you helps preserve our history by digitizing

and maintaining thousands of items per year, ensuring the longevity and accessibility of our collection.

WHY IT MATTERS“I’ve seen the power of a single book to show someone their own identity. I interact with kids who come in trying to figure out who they are and discover a world of books they don’t have access to at home. Librarians help people discover new possibilities. And that changes the world.”– Lois Langer Thompson, Hennepin County Library Director

Your Donation Bridges Gaps, Enriches Lives, And Empowers Our Community To Thrive

Helping Tackle the Achievement Gap

Reaching Out and Engaging Seniors

TWO WAYS YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE• Powered by your donations, Hennepin County Library provides powerful resources including the Best Buy Teen

Tech Center, a buzzing, vibrant place of discovery for young people like the Hanafi siblings (below) to gain robotics, computer programing, graphic design, and other skills.

• Through funding from Friends like you, Hennepin County Library hires and trains 28 Teen Tech Squad leaders to plan and deliver project-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) workshops to more than 600 fellow teens and other youth.

WHY IT MATTERSDigital literacy skills are critical for teens to succeed in school, apply for jobs, research colleges, and build career skills. Yet thousands of youth in Hennepin County do not have home Internet connections, computers, or tablets.

In neighborhoods with few after-school resources, Teen Tech Squad engages teens with opportunities to experiment with high-tech tools, exposes them to STEM fields they may never have considered, and inspires them to build invaluable technical and leadership skills.

Through Teen Tech Squad and the Best Buy Teen Tech Center, the Library is providing access to the latest technology and ongoing trainings in seven of Hennepin County’s most culturally diverse and economically challenged communities.

TWO WAYS YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE• Gifts like yours fund Homework Help, a drop-in after-school tutoring program that offers youth in 12 neighborhoods

a free and welcoming after-school space to work with adult volunteers to master academic concepts and complete homework assignments.

• Friends help power Súper Kínder, a summer kindergarten-readiness program for Latino children ages 4-5 that uses fun, interactive lessons to build children’s early literacy skills and help caregivers create learning-rich environments at home.

WHY IT MATTERSIn a survey of more than 200 students, over 80% reported that their grades have risen since they began attending Homework Help. Similarly, after completing Súper Kínder, 80% of parents said they were helping their child learn by connecting daily activities to key knowledge areas for kindergarten-readiness (compared to 20% before).

TWO WAYS YOUR SUPPORT MAKES A DIFFERENCE• Your gifts deliver enriching resources and programming that help

ensure every member of our community – regardless of age or ability – has the opportunity to read, engage, and learn.

• Gifts like yours enhance the quality of life for more than 900 homebound individuals and the residents at 70+ assisted living facilities by providing high-quality social engagement and community-building activities.

WHY IT MATTERS“I no longer drive, so going to the library meant calling for a cab or taking a bus... So when the library started coming to me, I thought what a treat.”- Nora Johnson, resident at one of 70+ senior residences that receive resources and programming from our Library

Stalwart champion of our Library, Mary Doty, passed away in March of 2015. Mary was a true public servant and devoted Friend of our Library. She served for 18 years on the Minneapolis Public Library Board and during that time also served on the boards of the Metropolitan Library Services Agency (MELSA), and on the Urban Libraries Council. She fought hard for education, particularly for literacy and women’s education, and taught English in Cloquet, MN, and in Minneapolis Public Schools. Because of the devotion she inspired in others, and because of her generosity of spirit, our community donated over $15,000 in her memory to support our Library.

Tribute and memorial gifts in support of Hennepin County Library are among the most enduring and meaningful ways to honor or remember a loved one. In 2015, 334 generous individuals made tribute and memorial gifts in support of the Library. For a full acknowledgment of these gifts, visit supportHCLIB.org/tribute-2015

In our fast-paced culture, we’re proud to continue to provide our Friends with the opportunity to learn, ask questions, and hear unique perspectives by connecting with great stories and storytellers.

Prolific, award-winning authors spoke to sold-out Pen Pals audiences and packed Talk of the Stacks audiences this year. Take a look back at some of the highlights.

“I so loved going to the public library and still do. I found my first favorite book there, Madeline, and I never stopped reading. Where would we be without libraries?”- Judy Blume, Pen Pals speaker (right with Library Director Lois Langer Thompson)
