The past year has been successful for the alzheimers association greater Indiana Chapter, in both programs delivered and funds raised to further the mission of the association. Over 120,000 individuals in Indiana are living with alzheimers disease. Providing support and resources for these individuals and their families is the essence of the Chapter. By offering multiple education opportunities regarding alzheimers disease, both persons with dementia and their families can make informed choices.

Delivery of programs and services to those affected by alzheimers disease is the core mission of the chapter. With the assistance of dedicated volunteers and staff, the Chapter served 66,154 individuals in 2010 through our programs and services.

The greater Indiana Chapter brought several nationally recognized speakers for local programs throughout the year. David Troxel, MPH, visited the Chapter several times to speak

    Year In Review

to professionals that work directly with those who have alzheimers disease. additionally, anne Basting, Ph.D., spoke at the Chapters Fall Caregiver Conferences, delivering her message to caregivers in Indianapolis and Bloomington. Dr. Bastings presentation titled Forget Memory: Try Imagination, captured the audiences attention and spurred their creativity. Mother-daughter team of Mary Sharp and Rachel Kail were the Chapters keynote speakers at the Spring Caregiver Conferences in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. Family and professional caregivers attended these conferences and gained beneficial information to take back to their families or workplaces. In all, the greater Indiana Chapter experienced a 27% increase in attendance at education programs and attendees expressed a 96% overall satisfaction rate on the quality of these programs, with 95% of participants learning something new.

In 2010, the alzheimers association introduced two exciting new programs, alzheimers association TrialMatch and alzheimers association Comfort Zone. TrialMatch is a confidential and interactive tool that provides comprehensive clinical trial information and trial matching service for people with alzheimers disease and related dementias. Comfort Zone is a location management system designed

specifically for persons affected by alzheimers, giving those with the disease more freedom and independence in their community while providing their families peace of mind. The web-based Comfort Zone works with various devices to monitor the location of the person with alzheimers disease.

The programs and resources offered to those touched by alzheimers disease would not be possible without financial and community support. The greater Indiana Chapter is especially grateful to the individuals and organizations that help make our mission a reality through their generous contributions. Whether through participation in a special event, direct donation or corporate sponsorship, this critical support allows the Chapter to further its reach and scope.

Memory Walk, the nations largest event to raise awareness and funds for alzheimers care, support and research attracted over 7,000 individuals. We are grateful to everyone who participated in one of our twelve walks in the Fall of 2009, which helped us raise over 1.1 million dollars.

In addition to Memory Walk, there are other ways that the Chapter raised funds. In the 2010 fiscal year, special events such as Chocolate Sunday, Skeet Thompson golf Outing and QUaSH, in addition to planned gifts, individual and corporate contributions, conferences and grants provided a significant source of funding for the Chapter. as good stewards of the funds raised, 78% of the Chapters expenditures provided direct program support to those impacted by alzheimers disease.

In the 2010 fiscal year, the alzheimers association was focused on advocacy efforts, with 5,454 individuals in Indiana registered to be an advocate and to take action for our

cause. advocates of the Chapter work with local and national lawmakers to improve services for people with alzheimers disease and their families by informing policy regulators and lawmakers about the effects on families and its cost to society.

Our contacts with our elected Congressional representatives reached an all-time high. The most visible result of our effort was Senator evan Bayh sponsoring The National alzheimers Project act in the Senate which would establish a national plan to address alzheimers research, care and services. groundwork has also been laid to develop a similar plan for Indiana.

Thanks to our supporters and volunteers, the alzheimers association greater Indiana Chapter is poised to reach even more families and individuals affected by alzheimers disease in 2011. For information on how to become involved please contact us at 800-272-3900, or at www.alz.org/indiana.
