Having served Hawaii for 137 years, Matson has long benefitted from the deep sense of community that is central to island culture and the knowledge that we ultimately rely on each other for the security and well-being

of our families. It has become a core value that carries throughout our growing Pacific network, where we seek to strengthen all of the communities in which we live and work.

Last year, guided by employee committees, focused on organizations that are particularly effective in our communities and fully supported by our board of directors, Matson contri-buted more than $3.6 million in cash and in-kind support to more than 850 organizations in Hawaii, Alaska, Micronesia, the South Pacific and on the U.S. mainland. Added to this were the countless hours of personal time and effort Matson employees and their families devoted to making a difference in their communities.

We dedicate this edition of Manifest to the important work of nonprofit organizations in our communities and salute the leadership of those who volunteer to serve on our regional Matson Giving committees and the active participation of so many other employees who together embody the giving spirit of Matson.

$2,095,000: Cash contributions were made to 691 organizations and included significant predicable cash donations to United Ways in Hawaii and on the U.S. Mainland; the American Red Cross; the Navy League of the U.S.; the American Heart Association; and the Coast Guard Foundation. Matson also responded to unantici-pated needs and opportunities. The total includes donations to 178 organizations that participated in the Ka Ipu ‘Aina and Adahi I Tano’ environmental programs in Hawaii and Guam, respectively, and those programs’ costs.

$1,350,000: In-kind contributions were comprised primarily of donated shipping for environmental programs and food banks, and in response to multiple natural disasters including Typhoon Yutu, Cyclone Gita, and the Kilauea volcano eruption. Loans of containers for fundraisers and donations of used containers are included. In total, 74 charities were assisted.

$170,000: Cash contributions that match gifts made by employee donations (not including United Way workplace giving campaigns) were directed to 164 different charities. In addition, Matson employees made just over $15,000 in personal contributions to disaster-response efforts worldwide.

Since 2012, Matson has invested more than $17 million in its communities.

An extraordinary donation of multiple used containers

formed the framework which volunteers for the Impossible Roads Foundation modified

into ‘tiny homes’ for veterans in the Pacific Northwest.

Temporary cold storage for fundraising fairs and carnivals. Permanent storage for sports or fire-fighting equipment.

Moving a container full of furnishing and supplies for a new public charter school…of almost-new donated fitness equipment for the Y…of recovered discarded fishing nets no longer a hazard to marine life.

Relocating recyclable materials destined for new uses…or feed for cattle urgently moved away from lava….and breathing masks and building materials for the same purpose. And moving disaster relief equipment and supplies in response to fires, cyclones and typhoons…Matson’s in-kind support was often the best option.

Matson moved a donated fire truck from Dutch Harbor to Anchorage, destined to serve in Ninilchik, a remote Alaska Native village (Pop. 833) on the Kenai Peninsula. Several members of the all-volunteer crew ceremoniously ‘pushed-in’ the truck for the first time.

After Category 5 Supertyphoon Yutu devastated Saipan and

Tinian in CNMI in October 2018, Matson moved containers with

relief materials and supplies from ports as close as Guam and as far

away as the U.S. West Coast for local charities and governments

to speed up recovery.

as they annually design, build and landscape a home—

adding to the island’s supply of affordable housing.

HC&S, the last sugar plantation, is the reason many of us call Maui home and its closure was significant and, for many, deeply personal. Maui United Way knew it was time to support our HC&S family when Alice Lee formed the A Hui Hou steering committee to raise funds. It was a grassroots effort…and then something great happened. Matson. Matson jumped in with a HUGE contribution of $100,000 that gave the Committee the ability to help many families through this difficult transition, removing barriers so they could stand on their own again. MAINLAND

Matson’s cash donations across the U.S. mainland—excluding Alaska— are directed primarily to benefit the West Coast port cities in which we have operations—Seattle/Tacoma, Oakland and Los Angeles/Long Beach —and to states hosting our administrative operations—Arizona, Illinois and Georgia. Donations in other areas are generally linked to relationships we have established over time or which broadly support the transportation industry.

Cash donations in 2018 for these areas exceeded $430,000 (not including matching gifts), directed to 134 different organizations. Listed here are the recipients of Matson’s cash support.

The San Francisco Maritime National Park hosts both the USS Pampanito (front) and the SS Jeremiah O Brien, US Navy submarine and Liberty ship respectively, which just marked 75 years of age. Having previously served in World War II, both vessels now serve to remind peacetime visitors of the sacrifices made to end that conflict.

The Oakland Public Library is four years more esteemed than Matson—having been founded in 1878! Of its 16 branches serving the community, one is less than a half mile from Matson’s Oakland offices. Our support helps the OPL serve a diverse and multi-lingual population.

Thank you for making the difference, Matson! Brigantine Matthew Turner is the first educational tall ship… with an electric eco-hybrid propulsion system that charges under wind power—a tall ship first! Charles Hart, Call of the Sea

With your help…we carry on environmental educational programs that…help Bay Area school children better understand the awesome power of science! Marilou Seiff, Marine Science Institute

ALASKAMatson’s cash donations in Alaska exceeded $370,000 in 2018, benefiting 79 charities across the State.

During the fourth year of Giving in key communities of Anchorage, Kodiak and Dutch Harbor, two dozen charities new to Matson were funded, evidence of growing awareness of the giving program.

Listed here are recipients of Matson’s cash support.

The Covenant House Alaska youth shelter is a refuge for

homeless, abused, or exploited youth escaping the unforgiving

streets of Alaska. It offers a coffee shop and employment

training center for at-risk youth to learn a popular trade—

hot cups of coffee are practically a food group in this state.

Matson’s capital support was directed to Covey Café.

Alison Kear (left) and Covey Café staff on opening day.

With your lead gift…Matson helps transform this space into an amazing new training center…and makes a significant impact in the lives of homeless and run away youth. We are grateful that you continue to remember the most vulnerable in our community. Thank you for your compassion and support. Alison Kear, Covenant House Alaska

Our relationship with Matson is very much appreciated. Your efforts…in the prevention of suicide are important for all of our Alaskan communities. Dennis Lasley and Wendy Nielsen Fick, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

Matching the personal contributions of employees, whether personal funds or time and talent, empowers the donor and directs support to a broad range of interests. Together, employee contributions and funding from Matson’s varied matching gift programs provided approximately $250,000 in support to these employee-identified organizations.

Your matching contribution allows…free programs for people with disabilities…to have access to the healing power of the beach and ocean…Cara Short, AccesSurf
