VolunteersCounty Durham Community Foundation currently has almost 100 volunteers including board members, those who sit on panels, work in the office and help out at events. We thank them all for their valuable contribution.

‘The Next Chapter’ is in memory of: Brian Manning and Mike Airey

We have a team of dedicated staff who work closely with the board of trustees in order to deliver a quality service to donors and grant recipients alike. This year has seen more changes as we continue to grow, employing new staff to help us fulfil our vision to make a genuine difference in the community.

Our People

Page 3: Annual Review 2017 - CDCF · 2019. 4. 12. · Net gains/(losses) on investments 1,789,255 1,789,255 -478,628 NET INCOMING RESOURCES BEFORE TRANSFERS-372,813 -161,239 2,136,823 1,602,771

A lot has been achieved by the team and I am extremely honoured and proud to be asked to become chair of an organisation which makes such a difference.

Having been a supporter of the Community Foundation for the best part of 15 years, I am convinced of the organisation’s enormous value to the county as an independent grant-making charity. Therefore I am delighted to be succeeding Mark I’Anson, who has chaired the charity since 2008, overseeing huge growth in its operations and out-performing other charitable foundations in bigger and wealthier parts of the country. That’s because it has been brilliantly run and my job really is to maintain those standards.

My appointment comes at a time when more good causes are benefiting from the Community Foundation than ever before.

A lot has been achieved by the team and I am extremely honoured and proud to be asked to become chair of an organisation which makes such a difference.

My home county of Durham is magnificent in so many ways but we have to lift people’s aspirations, widen their horizons, and help them see what’s possible. CDCF must go on raising money and matching donors to the causes that matter to them, but it is about more than making an immediate impact. It is also about supporting individuals, groups and projects that can make a long-term difference and help the people of County Durham and Darlington realise their potential.

I plan to concentrate on the Community Foundation’s strategy and vision, while Paul Chandler, CDCF’s vice chair will focus on operational matters. Paul has invaluable experience and it will be very much a partnership between us, supported by the rest of the trustees.

So I relish the challenge that lies ahead and look forward to being part of the next chapter in CDCF’s story.

Grants and Vital Signs

The majority of our funds are donor-advised, where we work with the fund holder to determine potential recipients. For general community activity, we have a general application form and criteria, and mix and match contributions behind the scenes to fulfil fund holder and recipient requirements. Our applicants are seeing the benefit of the more streamlined and robust grant processes with shorter turnaround times for decision-making. This is resulting in increased levels of positive feedback about the experience of applying for grant funding from County Durham Community Foundation.

Sherburn House CharityThe main focus of Sherburn House Charity is to provide relief in need to people living between the River Tweed and River Tees. The Charity has historic roots and a significant grant-making presence in the region to support both community groups and individuals in need. From January 2017, County Durham Community Foundation took over the operational delivery of the Sherburn House Charity grant-making programme.

In 2016-17 £65,620 was awarded in 123 grants; 108 of these were modest sums of money to support individuals who were experiencing particular hardship.

Vital Signs During Summer 2017, County Durham Community Foundation will be undertaking Vital Signs - a global community foundation initiative developed in Canada in 2001 by the Toronto Foundation. It uses foundations’ ‘community knowledge’ to measure the vitality of their areas of benefit, to identify issues and trends and encourage people and organisations to act on local priorities and opportunities. This resource will help us to address need more closely, refocus grant-making to be the most effective and provide donors with further information.

County Durham Community Foundation held 215 funds during the last financial year, including 141 endowment funds. The remainder are annual or flow-through funds where the money is given out during the course of the year or a few years. Each fund has its own bespoke criteria. All grants aim to combat poverty and disadvantage.

DurhamWorks Learning Working Earning (LWE)The Community Foundation is one of over 15 delivery organisations working in partnership with DurhamWorks as a solution to youth unemployment in County Durham using our LWE model.

It creates a matrix of provision to support 5,830 young people from a broad range of delivery partners who work simultaneously with employers, identifying and creating employment opportunities, and young people (particularly those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged) to ensure they benefit from those opportunities.

By March 2017, over 220 individuals had been supported with more than £790,000 of grants allocated. The programme runs till June 2018 and is supported by the European Social Fund and Department for Work and Pensions.

As I write my last message as retiring Chair, it is very reassuring to note that our latest financial report highlights another very positive year with record grant-making of almost £3.5 million. The total now stands at over £35 million which is extraordinary for a relatively small, rural county and emphasises the generosity of local people.

I am delighted that the board has identified James Fenwick as my successor to become the next Chair and that Paul Chandler will become Vice Chair. Their skills and expertise will create a very strong leadership team to take the organisation forward through the coming years.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our President, Sir Paul Nicholson, my fellow trustees and the staff team for their support and friendship over my term of office. Our CEO Barbara Gubbins, who I have worked alongside for nine years is also leaving CDCF this year. Barbara has done an outstanding job of leading us through some difficult times and I am proud of what we have achieved together. I wish James and the rest of the team, including the trustees every good wish for the future.

I am confident that as I leave the organisation, it is in a strong position to carry on making changes, growing the endowment and providing solid and innovative support to the local community.

Mark I’AnsonRetiring Chair

It seems incredible that nine years have past since I joined County Durham Community Foundation but it has been an exciting and very rewarding journey with some great moments to cherish.

Not only have I had the privilege to meet some inspiring individuals from the voluntary sector delivering change and improving lives, but also had the opportunity to work with a very generous group of donors who want to support them.

One of the highlights of my time as CEO was the special dedication service at Durham Cathedral on the anniversary of our 20th year. A spontaneous standing ovation was given to the magnificent procession of community groups who led the parade and highlighted the diverse range of grants that the organisation had made.

Whatever has been achieved has been a joint effort. It has been a joy to work in County Durham and Darlington and I am sure the next Chief Executive and Chair will create even more opportunities through inspired local giving. I wish them every success.
