That was six years after Chrysler invented the mini-van, inventing an entire- ly new market segment in the au- to industry. And, Grahm said, people should stay tuned to see how the company has built on that legacy of luxury and engineering excel- lence with the new Town & Coun- try be announced early next year. “We’re trying to celebrate our company’s long history as we get ready to introduce new and ex- citing models in the next year,” Grahm said. Chrysler was founded on June 6, 1925, by Walter P. Chrysler. He built a company and a brand that wasn’t afraid to push the limits and think outside of the box, said Grahm. In 1925, when Chrysler realized his dream of creating his own company, he dedicated the company’s efforts to excellence in engineering, while building af- fordable, luxurious cars at a price consumers could afford. That tradition continues today. Through the last 90 years, Chrysler vehicles were known for innovative engineering, groundbreaking style, Grahm said, and “looking more expensive than they were,” the forerunner to affordable luxury. • 1920s – The first Chrysler branded vehicle was born as part of Maxwell Motors: the Chrysler Six. Walter P. Chrysler was Chairman of Maxwell Motors prior to establishing Chrysler Corporation in June 1925. Priced at $1,565, the light, powerful ve- hicle had a groundbreaking L- head six-cylinder engine and four-wheel hydraulic brakes, an uncommon feature in the 1920s. Additional Chrysler Six features included tubular front axles, full pressure lubrication, aluminum pistons, replaceable oil and air filters, shock absorbers and indi- rect interior lighting. The U.S. Environmental Protec- tion Agency disclosed Sept. 18 that stealth software makes VW’s 2009-2015 model cars powered by 2.0-liter diesel engines run cleaner during emissions tests than in actual driving. The EPA accused VW of in- stalling the so-called “defeat de- vice’’ in 482,000 cars sold in the United States. VW later acknowl- edged that similar software ex- ists in 11 million diesel cars worldwide and set aside 6.5 bil- lion euros ($7.2 billion) to cover the costs of the scandal. The company has told officials that the vehicles in question in- cluded VW cars with 1.6-liter and 2-liter diesel engines in Europe, German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said Sept. 24. “We don’t yet have figures for how many of these 11 million cars that are apparently affected are in Europe,’’ Dobrindt said. “That will be cleared up in the next few days.’’ Authorities will continue work- ing with Volkswagen to deter- mine what cars exactly are in- volved. It isn’t yet clear to what extent the scandal affects other brands in the Volkswagen Group, which has 12 brands in all – including Seat, Audi, Skoda and Porsche. It was also not clear whether the software would have led to VW cheating on emissions tests out- side the U.S. as well. Dobrindt last week set up a commission of inquiry to look in- to the scandal. The motor trans- VW Emission Scandal Hits 11M Vehicles CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 by Jim Stickford Volkswagen’s admission that 11 million of its diesel vehicles worldwide contain software that can rig emissions tests doesn’t mean that diesel technology doesn’t work. That’s the message of the Diesel Technology Forum, a Washington, D.C.-based non-prof- it organization the represents businesses in the diesel industry. “This scandal involves just one company,” said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum. “There are plenty of other auto manufactur- ers that make a good diesel prod- uct. But it’s fair to say that this VW scandal could have an im- pact on diesel sales. We’ll have to see what happens.” But, Schaeffer said, the forum does not comment on specific cases or circumstances involving individual companies and en- forcement actions by the govern- ment. “However,” Schaeffer said, “to the extent that these circum- stances have raised questions about diesel technology in gener- al, we offer the following. The im- portant thing to remember is that clean diesel is a viable and important technology that will have a role to play in the years to come. “The circumstances involving a single manufacturer do not de- fine an entire technology, or an industry. Vehicle manufacturers and engine makers have invested billions of dollars in research and development to successfully meet the most aggressive emis- sions standards in the world. They continue to work closely and cooperatively with the Envi- ronmental Protection Agency, California Air Resources Board, international regulatory bodies as well as environmental and other interests groups toward common goals.” Nothing has changed the fact that the diesel engine is the most energy efficient internal combus- tion engine, Schaeffer said. It’s proven tech and its combination of efficiency, power, reliability, performance, low-emissions and suitability for using renewable fu- els ensures a place for diesel technology to help meet the de- mands of a global economy. “We are also confident that consumers will continue to find the new generation of clean diesel cars, trucks and SUVs as a competitive choice to meet their personal transportation needs,” Schaeffer said. “Finally, it is im- portant to focus forward on the significant accomplishments of an entire industry that devel- oped and refined clean diesel technology to what it is today; a key strategy to achieving current and future energy and climate goals.” The VW scandal came just as GM is getting ready to launch its new Canyon diesel truck. GM spokesman Brian Goebel said that he agrees with Schaeffer and that it is “all systems go” on the launch of the diesel Canyon. “People should start seeing the vehicle on the road in the next few weeks,” Goebel said. “It’s a good vehicle and I think people understand that diesel is still a good technology that can help them.” VW Issues Does Not Taint Clean Diesel Technology Finding better materials to make vehicles lighter is no easy task. But it’s an important one because lightweighting the mate- rials that go into cars is one way automakers will use to meet up- coming federal mileage stan- dards. To that end, Ford Motor Com- pany and Alcoa Inc. are collabo- rating to produce next-genera- tion automotive aluminum alloys that are more formable and de- sign-friendly, said Ford spokesman Mike Levine. Ford will use Alcoa’s Micromill material in multiple components on the 2016 F-150 – becoming the first automaker to use the ad- vanced automotive aluminum commercially, Levine said. • 1925-1930 – Early Chryslervehicles provided style and pow-er, but were also affordable, which contributed to the brand’srapid success. Early models werenamed after their top speed: theChrysler 58 had a top speed of 58miles per hour (mph); a Chrysler72 could go a max 72 mph and soon. In 1926, Chrysler introduceda more powerful and costly Impe-rial model, giving Chrysler a re-sponse to Cadillac, Packard andPeerless. The Imperials offeredprestige as a top-of-the-lineChrysler. Chrysler production inthe late 1920s focused on bothfour- and six-cylinder poweredvehicles.• 1930s – This decade brought

the Great Depression in the Unit-ed States and technology tookhold in the automotive industry.Beginning in 1931, Chrysler intro-duced a number of engineeringfeats. Chrysler took “FloatingPower,” a two-point mountingsystem strategically placed sothe engine’s natural rocking axiswould intersect with its center ofgravity, keeping the engine’s nat-ural vibration from reaching theframe and body, and improved itwith rubber engine mounts, which further reduced engine vi-bration in the body. The most groundbreaking ve-

hicle from the 1930s was theChrysler Airflow, Grahm said.Carl Breer was inspired by asquadron of Army Air Corpsplanes flying overhead in the late‘20s. Chrysler constructed awind tunnel at their HighlandPark headquarters during the de-velopment of the Airflow. As thedesign team developed early pro-totypes, they learned about aero-dynamics as they worked. Theybuilt at least 10 full-size semi-streamliners during develop-ment. Wind tunnel testing in-spired the modified teardropshape. The body sported a short, curved nose with faired-in head-lamps, and the engine sat 20inches farther back than wasnormal for the time.Chrysler shocked the industry

with a vehicle that representedfuture design and engineering ad-vances when it introduced theChrysler Airflow in 1934. The Air-flow was an “engineer’s” car withimpressive innovations at thetime. A beam-and-truss body

gave great strength but weighedless than expected, through atighter interlocking method ofblending body and chassis. Bodypanels extended below the frameand all passengers sat within thewheelbase. The engine reachedpast the front axle, enabling asmooth ride to rear-seat passen-gers. Automatic overdrive was in-troduced with both the Chryslerand DeSoto Airflows. For maxi-mum passenger comfort, the Air-flow seats were stretched to 50inches, widest in the industry.• 1940s – Walter P. Chrysler,

founder of the company and thebrand, died in August 1940.The early 1940s saw the devel-

opment of the “Vacamatic,” afour-speed gearbox with tworanges. The driver used theclutch in the normal way by se-lecting either a Low (1-2) or High(3-4) range.Chrysler, like many automak-

ers, geared up for war produc-tion after the start of the 1942model year and halted civilianproduction of automobiles inFebruary 1942. Among the betterknown of Chrysler’s World War IIproducts were the M-4 Shermantank, “Sea Mule” marine tugs,Harbor Utility Tugs (HUTs) andChrysler-Bell air raid sirens. The late 1940s saw the wood-

bodied Town & Country sedansand the graceful and beautifulTown & Country convertiblesdraw the interest of celebrities, which began to spark interest inthe full line of Chrysler vehicles.• 1950s – 1951 was the birth of

what would be one of the mostrecognized, powerful engines inthe automotive industry, thehemispheric-head V8 engine, oth-erwise known as the Hemi. Initial-ly installed in the ChryslerSaratoga, New Yorker and Imperi-al, the Hemi operated with excep-tional volumetric efficiency anddelivered truly thrilling perform-ance for its day. The engine’s low-er compression ratio also let theHemi run on lower octane fuelthan most V8s at the time.In 1955, the first muscle car,

the Chrysler 300, was intro-duced. The hardtop contained a300-horsepower Hemi V8 withsolid valve lifters and dual four-barrel carburetors, the mostpowerful full-size car in theworld, Grahm said.Virgil Exner took over Chrysler

design in the early 1950s, with

his “Forward Look” styling de-buting in 1955. Exner’s newstyling language featured a flathood, light, airy roof and tailfins. In 1957, Chrysler Corporation’s

entire line of cars was awardedMotor Trend’s “Car of the Year”award, and Exner and his team

received the Gold Medal from theIndustrial Design Institute.1957 saw the introduction of

torsion-bar front suspension, which delivered superior han-dling and allowed for much lowerbodies. Chrysler also introducedthe first rear-window defogger.

choices for vehicles like the Sier-ra are important, Goebel said, be-cause in the last decade the wayspeople use pickups havechanged. While traditionally awork vehicle, these days buyerslike to be able to use trucks tohaul items and still be able to go

out with friends over the week-end.“That need for flexibility is re-

Don Schumacher Racing (DSR)driver Tommy Johnson Jr. drovehis Make-A-Wish Mopar to a run-ner-up finish on a tricky zMAXRaceway surface at the CarolinaNationals, the first of six Nation-al Hot Rod Association (NHRA)“Countdown to the Champi-onship” playoff events on Sept.20, and sits in second in the Fun-ny Car standings just six mark-ers behind the points leader. Itwas the 18th final round appear-ance in 19 events this season forthe newly designed 2015 DodgeCharger R/T Funny Car afterspending more than a year in de-velopment.After earning his second pole

position of the year by setting acareer best elapsed time passand track record at 3.971 sec-onds at 312.42 mph, Johnson Jr.took his Hemi-powered machinepast Bob Gilbertson, CourtneyForce and Alexis DeJoria to ad-vance to his sixth final round ap-pearance of the year. The Carolina Nationals final

elimination showdown pitted theNo.1 qualifier against the No.2qualifier Del Worsham for notonly the Wally trophy, but alsothe lead in the “Countdown tothe Championship”. Both com-petitors had near identical reac-tion times off the start, but John-son Jr.’s 4.119 second elapsedtime run at 300.93 miles per hourcouldn’t beat Worsham’s 4.086sec/ 307.16 mph pass for the vic-tory and top spot in the Count-down.“We were disappointed not to

get the win after being No. 1qualifier,” Johnson Jr. said.“That’s two times this year thatwe've lost in the final after beingNo. 1 qualifier. So yes, we’re a lit-tle disappointed, but in the bigpicture it was very important toget off to a good start in theCountdown to the Champi-onship, and we did that.”

It was a four-way battle for the2015 NASCAR Canadian Tire Se-ries (NCATS) presented by Mobil1 Championship going into thispast weekend’s Pinty’s 250 atKawartha Speedway. But when the dust settled and

the checkered flag flew to closeout the 2015 season, it was ScottSteckly, driver of the No. 22Canadian Tire Dodge, hoistingthe coveted trophy.Steckly claimed the title over

fellow competitors Jason Hath-away, Andrew Ranger and L.P.Dumoulin, who were all in a four-way fight for the championshipgoing into Sept. 21’s season fi-nale race at the 0.6 km (.375-mile) Ontario track.Steckly, 43, earned the pole

position with a blistering, track-record lap in qualifying at thewheel of his Dodge-bodied racecar. For Steckly, this was his fourth

Series title. He became only the33rd person in the history ofNASCAR to win four or moretouring or national series cham-pionships.As with the majority of the

2015 NCATS competitors, Stecklycrossed the finish line atKawartha Speedway at the wheelof a Dodge Challenger-bodiedracing car.More than half of the races

this season were won by a Dodgedriver, with six of the Top 10 finalpoints positions held by Dodgedrivers.Andrew Ranger, the fan-

favourite head driver for TeamMopar, closed out the 2015 sea-son third in overall NCATSpoints after a 10th place finish atKawartha.

The 2016 Cascada – Buick’sfirst convertible offered in theUnited States in 25 years – ispriced at $33,990.When it goes on sale early next

year, the Cascada will offer morestandard content, a more power-ful standard engine and a lowerstarting price than the Audi A3Cabriolet, said said Duncan Al-dred, vice president of Buick.“Cascada expands Buick’s line-

up with a uniquely fun and per-sonal driving experience,” saidAldred. “With a lower price thankey competitors, it also promisesto shake up the segment – andlook good doing it.”The 2016 Cascada – designed

from the ground up as a convert-ible – comes well-equipped in a2+2 configuration, with room forfour adults, Aldred said. Perform-ance is rooted in a 200-horsepow-er turbo engine, backed by a six-speed automatic transmission, with Buick’s sophisticated HiPerStrut front suspension and aWatts Z-link rear suspensionstandard. The Cascada also offers plenty

of storage space, including 13.4cubic feet of cargo room with thetop up and 9.8 cubic feet with thetop down, as well as a 22.4-inch x12.6-inch pass-through from thetrunk to the passenger compart-ment.When the 50/50-split rear seat isfolded, longer items such as skisand wakeboards can be stowedinside.Americans got their first look

at the Cascada at the 2015 NorthAmerican International AutoShow. The vehicle will be avail-able in the spring of 2016. It isbased on the Opel Cascada, which was developed at GM’s In-ternational Technical Develop-

ment Center in Russelsheim, Ger-many, where more than 6,000 en-gineers work on Opel models, said Opel Group CEO Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann.“In Europe, the Cascada has

won over customers and trademedia alike, resulting in numer-ous awards including the Plus XAward in Germany and the Gold-en Steering Wheel in Switzer-

land,” Neumann said. “In Portu-gal, Turbo Magazine named itConvertible of the Year in 2014.”The vehicle will be manufac-

tured in Poland. It is based onGM’s Delta II platform, which isthe company’s current compactcar platform. Other vehicles thatuse the platform include ChevyCruze, the Volt, the Opel Amperaand the Cadillac ELR.

WASHINGTON (AP) – PopeFrancis was hard to spot in themotorcade of more than 20armed SUVs and police cars thatmotored into the nation’s capitallate Tuesday. The pontiff ditchedthe fancy wheels in favor of amuch more modest ride: a Fiat. After he stepped off his plane

at Andrews Air Force Base inneighboring Maryland, Franciswas driven into town in the backof a tiny, charcoal gray Fiat 500L.The four-door model was sand-wiched between two enormousblack SUVs in the motorcade.

Francis has made a point of us-ing particularly modest cars, part of his emphasis on simplici-ty, conservatism and rejection oftoday’s consumerist lifestyle.

Buick Cascada Set for Spring 2016 Debut

The price has been set for the upcoming 2016 Buick Cascada.

Volkswagen’s emissions-cheat-ing crisis is not expected to putthe brakes on September carsales, said to Edmunds.com in apress release about vehicle salestrends issued on Sept. 25.“Volkswagen’s deception is

dominating headlines, but it isnot keeping shoppers away fromother brands’ showrooms,” saidJessica Caldwell, Edmunds.comdirector of industry analysis. “Itputs the crisis in a little bit ofperspective, since these Volk-swagen diesels don’t constitute avery big share of sales.“It’s also a reminder that buy-

ers won’t disappear from themarket because they suddenlycan’t or don’t want to buy theseaffected cars. They’re willing toturn to other automakers thatwill meet their needs.”Volkswagen admitted to using

a “cheat device” to pass EPAemissions tests for many of itsdiesel-powered vehicles since2009. The crisis involves 11 mil-lion VW vehicles worldwide.Edmunds projects that Volk-

swagen/Audi will be the only ma-jor manufacturer to post year-over-year sales losses in Septem-ber.A 2.0 percent decrease in

VW/Audi sales is expected.Ford and Hyundai/Kia, on the

other hand, are expected to turnin extremely strong Septembersales performances.Edmunds is projecting a 10.1

percent decrease in overall salesfrom August 2015, but a 13.9 per-cent increase from September2014.This will make the September

sales volume the biggest Septem-ber since 2004.“The VW diesel matter has not

affected overall industry sales,”Caldwell said.In fact, many shoppers who

like the spirited performance ofVW diesels and want to take thealt-fuel route may opt for “more

fun-to-drive hybrids and EVs,”Caldwell said.Edmunds counts 44 models

that are offered with diesel-pow-ered engines in the 2015 modelyear. VW and Audi combine toproduce 17 models – or 39 per-cent – of those 44 total models.Other diesel vehicles on the

market include diesel versions ofthe BMW 3 Series, ChevroletCruze and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class.Less than 4 percent of cars and

light trucks sold in the U.S. in2014 were diesel-powered, ac-cording to industry statistics. The Diesel Technology Forum,

a Washington, D.C.-area nonprof-it that advocates diesel technolo-gy, said it will not comment onthe VW situation, but still pro-motes clean-diesel technology.

“Nothing has changed the factthat the diesel engine is the mostenergy efficient internal combus-tion engine,” it said in a state-ment. “We are confident that con-sumers will continue to find thenew generation of clean dieselcars, trucks and SUVs as a com-petitive choice to meet their per-sonal transportation needs.”The gap is closing between

gasoline and diesel fuel pumpprices, according to the U.S> En-ergy Information Administration. In its most recent update, the EIAsaid the average price for a regu-lar gallon of unleaded gasoline inAugust stood at $2.64.

opment. “This collaboration sup-ports our continued drive for in-novation, as we research auto-motive applications for evengreater light-weighting.”

Alcoa’s Micromill technology, announced in December 2014,produces an aluminum alloy thatis 40 percent more formable thantoday’s automotive aluminum,Nair said.

“Alcoa’s breakthrough Mi-cromill technology offers highlydifferentiated automotive materi-al with strength, weight, forma-bility and surface quality combi-nations previously impossible,”said Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa chair-man and chief executive officer.“This high-tech aluminum will

give Ford a true material edge en-abling greater design flexibilityand better vehicle performance –making the concept cars of to-morrow a reality.”

The increased formability ofMicromill aluminum makes iteasier to shape into intricateforms, such as the inside panelsof automobile doors and externalfenders, Kleinfeld said. The in-creased material strength allowsfor the use of thinner aluminumsheet without compromisingdent resistance.

Micromill is the fastest, mostproductive aluminum castingand rolling system in the worldcombining multiple technologiesinto a streamlined productionsystem. A traditional rolling milltakes around 20 days to turnmolten metal into coil; Micromilldoes it in just 20 minutes, Klein-feld said.

Ford will begin using Micromillmaterial in 2016 F-150 productionin the fourth quarter of 2015, andplans to increase its use over thenext several years on a range ofvehicle components and futureplatforms, Nair said. It is project-ed Ford’s use of Micromill mate-rial on its vehicles will more thandouble from 2016 to 2017.

Alcoa’s advanced alloys offerFord the formability and strengthrequired for greater flexibility indesigning vehicles using com-plex parts. By using the highlyformable material, parts con-structed of multiple pieces canbe manufactured as a single part– reducing complexity and as-sembly time. Target applicationsfor the material include criticalstrength structural parts as wellas exterior panels that mustmeet strict surface quality re-quirements.

Aluminum alloy produced us-ing the Micromill process has al-ready been validated by Ford en-gineers to ensure it meets thestringent requirements for pro-ducing high-quality parts, espe-cially the kinds of complex struc-tures that make up F-150, Nairsaid.

“The door inner is one of themost difficult parts in automo-tive stamping,” said Peter Fried-man, Ford global manager ofstructures and stamping, Re-search & Advanced Engineering.“The ability to produce an alloyusing Alcoa’s Micromill technolo-gy to make that part is a realstatement for how this processcan benefit the automotive in-dustry and Ford in particular.

“This technology will helpFord to produce the type of vehi-cles our customers want,” addedFriedman. “We believe the tech-nology can be used to developnew alloys that will improve ourability to form complex parts, which will help in both designand efficiency.”

Buick has confirmed the all-new 2017 LaCrosse, with a pre-view of its Avenir concept-in-spired design cues is coming. The new LaCrosse should be a

striking evolution from currentBuick models, said Buick spokes-woman Crystal Wilson. The newLaCrosse features a grille designthat puts a new face on thebrand, including a new, three-col-or tri-shield insignia set on awing-shaped element.Contrasting with darkened wa-

terfall grille bars and spanningthe width of the opening, it con-nects the grille and headlamps, and emphasizes LaCrosse’s newsculptural surfacing, Wilson said. The design was introduced on

theAvenir concept and inspired bythe 1954 Wildcat II concept. It’s a face all Buick models will

adopt by 2018, Wilsons aid.“The Avenir concept shattered

expectations of what a Buickcould be and the 2017 LaCrossepromises to do the same,” saidDuncan Aldred, vice president ofBuick. “Its expressive design rep-resents a break from conventionand highlights the progressive-ness in all new Buick models.”The next-generation LaCrosse’s

design is framed on an all-newchassis that is stronger yet lighter

than the current model and servesas the foundation for a more dy-namic driving experience.

New technologies such as afive-link rear suspension con-tribute to a more responsiveride, while taking Buick’s signa-ture quietness to a new thresh-old – and it’s a premium featurenot found on many other full-sizeluxury models, including theLexus ES.The 2017 LaCrosse debuts in

November at the Los Angeles Au-to Show. Wilson said that more ofthe technical details of the newLaCrosse, including how thechasssis is both lighter andstronger, will be released at theLos Angeles Auto Show.

Glimpse of 2017 LaCrosseLaCrosse will debut in November at the Los Angeles Auto Show.

“The Avenirconcept shattered

expectationsof what a Buick

could be....”–Duncan Aldred,
