“Love” Instructions

Materials requirements for one 12” appliquéd mini quilt

These requirements are for non-directional prints

The 12” heart hanger from Ackfeld Manufacturing is perfect for this project. Item #66777

Fabrics

Deep Pink 1: 7 x 12” piece for block and heart

Deep Pink 2: 7 x 12” piece for block and “V”

Green 1: 7 x 12” piece for block and “E”

Green 2: 7 x 12” piece for block and “L”

Green 3: ¼ yd for binding

Backing: 14 x 14” fabric of choice

Other MaterialsWarm & Natural Cotton Batting: one 14 x 14” piece

Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 fusible adhesive: 1 sheet or 9 x 9”

Thread for quilting and satin stitching

For quilting and satin stitching I used a 90/14 topstitching needle.

Cut the Fabrics

From each of the Pinks and Greens, cut a 6½” square block:

From the Green 3 binding fabric, cut two 2½ x 44” strips

Piece the Top

Using a ¼” seam, piece the quilt top like a classic four patch block

Prepare the Appliqué Templates

Lay the fusible adhesive, paper side up, over the appliqué templates and trace one of each of them onto

the paper side allowing about ½” space between the traced templates.

Roughly cut the templates out about ¼” outside of the traced line.

Fuse the templates to the wrong sides of their corresponding fabrics.

Neatly cut the appliqués from the fabrics on the traced lines of the adhesive paper.

Remove the paper backing from the appliqués. Referring to the illustration or photo, arrange the

appliqués on the right side of the quilt top.

When you are satisfied with the placement of the appliqués, fuse them into place.

Quilting

Sandwich the batting between the wrong sides of the top and backing and quilt as desired over the entire

quilt, including the appliqués. I used Sulky® Blendables thread and a meandering “stipple” over the pink

blocks and a “loopy” path over the green blocks. If you want your appliqués to have a raw, unfinished

edge, the quilting will secure the appliqués and you can skip to the Binding instructions. If you would like

to finish the edges of the appliqués, go to next step for satin stitching.

Satin Stitching

I used satin stitching to finish the edges of these appliqués. Using a narrow stitch width (I use the 2.5

setting most often), and a stitch length as short and tight as you can handle, satin stitch around all of the

appliqués.

I used Premium Sulky® 40 wt. rayon thread in coordinating colors.

Binding

Join the two binding strips cut from Green 3 and bind in your usual manner.

Sulky is a registered trademark of Sulky of America.
