Resumes April 24th through May 15, 2019
PASTOR DAVID KEBSCHULL
“43 Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were
being done by the apostles. 44
All who believed were together and had all
things in common; 45
they would sell their possessions and goods and
distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46
Day by day, as they
spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and
ate their food with glad and generous hearts, 47
praising God and having the goodwill of all the peo-
ple. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:43–47).
Easter greetings to you! Thank you for a great Lent and Easter at St Mark this year. The sanctu-
ary was full on Easter morning and is still covered with the artwork from people of all ages in the St
Mark community. This morning we are putting things away and preparing for what is next this
Spring at St Mark.
So what’s next?? During the season of Easter we will be looking at Acts, also known as “The Acts
of the Apostles”. This book serves as a record of what took place in the life of the church in the
months and years following Easter morning. The reason this book is so important to the Church is
two-fold. First, it gives us the most complete record of the events that took place as the early
Church was getting started and sent into the world. The second reason, is that from the book of
Acts we can discover what we as the Church are to be about. There were successes and failures in
those early years, but from Acts we discover what it is that the early Church held central, and what
we at St Mark can keep central in our lives as a congregation.
Join us in worship each weekend throughout these next weeks as we look to Acts and what God’s
vision for this community can look like.
Peace to you,
Pastor Dave Kebschull
BIBLE 101: ACTS OF THE APOSTLES
Starting this weekend (April 28) I will be teaching a 6-week class on the New Testament book of
Acts. Bring your Bible with you as we will be looking through the entire book together for the next 6
weeks. Acts gives us a good history the early church as they came to understand their purpose
and how to face the challenges that they faced. (Bible 101- are classes that I hope to teach through
out the year that help us to become more familiar with the Bible and to connect the teachings of the
Bible with our lives.) We will meet in the conference room in the office area. Pastor Dave

April showers will soon result in May flowers as we officially say goodbye to winter. Farmers will be
planting this year’s crops and we see the newborn calves and lambs frolicking in the pens and pas-
tures. Just as we are reborn with the resurrection of Christ through Easter, there is a new sense of
hope and life with the spring season.
Spring will turn to summer and even though our schedules sometimes become even busier, please
remember to spend time with our St. Mark family in worship and through helping and praying for
each other and our community.
In Christ’s love Kent Smith

PROPERTIES BOARD
BOOK NOTES
The Properties Board is in the process of ordering new doors and windows for the east entrance.
Last year the interior doors were replaced but now the exterior doors are deteriorating fast. If you
get a chance to drive by St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lake Avenue, their east doors have recently
been replaced with very similar doors. These doors would not only enhance the looks of our en-
trance but also add to the security of St. Mark. Contributions toward this project would be very wel-
come.
In the near future we are also looking into replacing some windows in the northeast corner of the
education unit, replacing or covering below the roof line around the church and the soffit on the
south side needs to be repaired or replaced.

Property Board Chairman

May 2019 The board met on April 10 during our Lenten meal with all members present. We
discussed supporting the flood bucket project and decided to give $100 from our budget to
help purchase items to help complete more buckets.
We will again collect shoes during the month of May for Soles4Souls. Please refer to addi-
tional information in this newsletter regarding this project and look for more information to be
shared during worship services.
Cindy Smith, Chair
SOCIAL MINISTRY
The St. Mark Social Ministry Board invites you to join them in collect-
ing shoes for Soles 4Souls during the month of May. Your do-
nation of new or used shoes will not only provide shoes for
people all over the world, but also work opportunities for indi-
viduals with disabilities. The collected shoes will be sent to the
processing center at Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon, IA where the
individuals they serve will prepare the shoes and ship them to Soles4Souls
for distribution. You can donate shoes by placing them in the Soles4Souls
collection boxes location in the narthex.

Happy Father’s Day!
At Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI), we strive to build up and empower Iowa kids and families. For
us, Father’s Day is a time to celebrate all the fathers and male role models we see every day.
Through our Early Childhood Services, young men are learning to become dads. They’re becoming
confident and active in their child’s life, and they are creating loving, bright futures for their families.
Many of the boys and young men that LSI serves in our Bremwood and Beloit Residential Treat-
ment Centers have never had a positive male role model in their lives. But our caring volunteers and
staff members are there to help guide them.
You are making all of this possible through your support of LSI. Thank you for responding to the
love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service!
Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate
service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA
(Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America).
We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins,
ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Learn more at LSIowa.org and Facebook.com/LSI.iowa.
A New Life
A year and a half ago, Kevin was homeless. He struggled with substance use. He didn’t have a car.
Or a driver’s license. Or a job.
Then, his world turned upside down and all at once, his priorities shifted. He found out he was a fa-
ther to a beautiful baby girl, Willow. Kevin immediately began rehab and fought hard to build a
healthy lifestyle. After months of hard work and efforts to get clean, Willow was placed in Kevin’s
care while her mother received treatment for her substance use disorder.
Kevin turned to LSI’s Early Childhood Services for support and a community to help him create the
best home for his daughter. After starting services last year, Kevin can’t imagine life without LSI.
Through regular in-home visits from Lindsay, his LSI worker, Kevin is helping Willow develop her
language and speaking, as well as her motor skills.
Now one and a half, Willow is learning to use pens and markers, and loves writing and coloring. Her
favorite book is a present from her dad – a picture book of the ABCs.
Kevin now has sole custody of Willow, and he works closely with her mother to ensure she gets reg-
ular visits. His life has changed for the better, and he credits Lindsay and LSI for walking alongside
him on his journey.
