Przypada dzisiaj II Niedziela Wielkiego Postu. Motywem przewodnim dzisiejszych rozważań jest podróż. W pierwszym czytaniu z Księgi Rodzaju, Bóg nakazuje Abramowi (patriarsze Abrahamowi) opuścić ojczyznę i udać się w podróż do nowej krainy.

„GANDALF: Koniec? Nie, podróż nie kończy się tutaj. Śmierć to tylko kolejna ścieżka, którą wszyscy musimy podążyć. Znika szara, deszczowa zasłona tego świata. Wszystko spowija srebrzysta poświata i wtedy to widzisz. PIPPIN: Co, Gandalfie? Najświętsza Dziewico Maryjo, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami! Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

This week, we celebrate the Second Sunday of Lent. On the Second Sunday of Lent, the Scripture readings talk about a journey. In the First Reading, from the Book of Genesis, we hear God command Abram to leave his land and to follow God to a new place, a new land. At the end of the reading we hear that Abram went as the LORD directed him. In the Gospel of Matthew, we too hear about a journey. The Gospel tells us of the Transfiguration of our Lord atop a mountain. How is this a journey? It is easy for us to see the journey of Abram in the First Reading, but what is the journey of our Lord in the Gospel? What is the journey of Jesus in the Transfiguration? During the Transfiguration, St. Matthew tells us that “he

was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light.” On top of Mt. Tabor, our Lord revealed to three of His Apostles His Divine glory. The glory that the Apostles saw on top of the mountain prefigures the glory of Jesus’ Resurrection. Jesus makes this connection between the Transfiguration to His Resurrection from the dead at the end of the Gospel Himself. “As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

However, the words of Jesus at the end of the Gospel also teach another important lesson, and this is the connection to the subject of journey. What does our Lord tells His Apostles again? Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyone until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.” Thus, our Lord reveals to the Apostles (and all followers of Jesus) that the journey to glory goes through death. The journey to the Resurrection goes through the Cross.

Many Christians like to skip the Cross and get to the Resurrection, but there is no skipping the Cross and death. This is why the Catholic Church always uses a Crucifix, instead of just an empty cross (like many non-Catholics use) or the trendy, contemporary Risen Christ atop a cross. While the empty cross is a common Christian symbol shared by all Christian churches, Catholics stand out for their frequent use of the crucifix, a cross that shows the suffering body of Jesus Christ. The purpose of the crucifix has always been to display the immense love Christ has for all humanity and to remind us of the hope of the Resurrection won by that victory of Jesus’ Passion.

The great Church Father and Doctor of the Church St. Augustine offers a great teaching and explanation about the crucifix. “The death of the Lord our God should not be a cause of shame for us; rather, it should be our greatest hope, our greatest glory. In taking upon himself the death that he found in us, he has most faithfully promised to give us life in him, such as we cannot have of ourselves. He loved us so much that, sinless himself, he suffered for us sinners the punishment we deserved for our sins. How then can he fail to give us the reward we deserve for our righteousness, for he is the source of righteousness? How can he, whose promises are true, fail to reward the saints when he bore the punishment of sinners, though without sin himself? Brethren, let us then fearlessly acknowledge, and even openly proclaim that Christ was crucified for us; let us confess it, not in fear but in joy, not in shame but in glory.”

The crucifix reminds us that there is no Resurrection without the cross. This is the journey of the Transfiguration. This is the journey of that our Lord had to pass, and this is the journey that all souls must pass. The great Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien beautifully reminds us of the Mystery of the Transfiguration and the journey through death to the Resurrection in his great literary work, The Lord of the Rings trilogy. “GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it. PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what? GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise. PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad. GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.”

Please pray for all who are sick with the coronavirus around the world. Pray for God’s mercy and protection, and pray for a cure and end to this epidemic. Please see the bulletin for new Archdiocesan guidelines and changes in practice during Mass related to coronavirus precautions. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us!

Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!
