This Sunday, we hear of one of the most famous and beautiful parables of Jesus: the Parable of the Good Samaritan. The Spanish artist Pelegrin Clave (1811-1880) puts the words of Jesus into art splendidly. In the center, we see the image of the good Samaritan, dressed in red and gold, nursing the man who was beaten and robbed. To the right of the good Samaritan is his donkey, grazing on some green grass. Behind the donkey’s behind, we see the priest who passed by, and next to the donkey’s head, we see the Levite, dressed like a Franciscan friar with tonsured head, who is also passing by. The Gospel of Luke tells us the man journeying down from Jerusalem was stripped, beaten, and left for dead. In this painting by Clave, we see the man is stripped and lying half dead, but he doesn’t look beaten. Unlike many other paintings of this parable, which show the man bleeding and

wounded, Pelegrin’s man has no visible external wounds In Pelegrin’s image, we see the good Samaritan tending to the man’s head, but we see no wound on the head. Pelegrin is teaching us that the wounds that are being healed are internal. The man symbolizes humanity, who was beaten and robbed by the devil. Writing on this parable, the great patristic Father and Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine teaches us, “they stripped man of his immortality and wounded him (by persuading to sin).”

This wound that St. Augustine talks about is called concupiscence. Concupiscence is the frailty and weakness of human nature, as a result of Original Sin, that disorders our appetites (a word in philosophy and theology that means desires) and inclines the human person to sin (Catechism, 1426). After understanding the meaning of concupiscence, Pelegrin’s depiction of the man’s wounds makes perfect sense. There are no external wounds to see, like blood, because the man wasn’t primarily wounded physically, externally. Rather, man was wounded internally, spiritually. Pelegrin masterfully illustrates that our will and intellect have been wounded. Our choice for good or evil resides in the mind, or intellect, but as a result of Original sin, “man’s freedom is limited and fallible” (Catechism, 1739). As St. Augustine teaches, we are wounded, and as a result, easily persuaded to sin, to choose wrong/evil. In Pelegrin’s painting, we see the good Samaritan (symbol for Jesus) healing the man’s head because humanity’s will (our choice for good or evil) is wounded. Concupiscence, the disordered appetites and attachment to sin brought about by Original Sin, is cured only through Jesus. Let us pray to Christ to heal our wills with His grace that we may love God, know what is good, avoid evil, and choose what is right/good in our lives. Please pray for safe travel for all young people who are travelling to World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, particularly all young people from the Archdiocese of Chicago. May our Blessed Mother Mary help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Informes Padre Bob

Vivat Jesus! ¡Viva Jesús!

Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza

Augustyn z Hippony stwierdza, iż „człowiekowi skradziono nieśmiertelność i zraniono go (nakłaniając do grzechu)”.

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
