Third Sunday of Lent
The Samaritan woman at the well
in today’s Gospel is a symbol for
humanity after Original Sin.
Sisto Badalocchio (1585-1620).
Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well
¿Qué o a quién elegimos amar?
Przypada dzisiaj III Niedziela Wielkiego Postu. Słuchamy dzisiaj opowieści z czwartego rozdziału Ewangelii według św. Jana, o spotkaniu Jezusa z Samarytanką przy studni. Wydarzenie to widzimy tu w pięknej interpretacji włoskiego malarza z przełomu XVI/XVII wieku: Sisto Badalocchio.
Ranni wskutek Upadku Pierwszych Ludzi, pragniemy zaspokoić najgłębsze potrzeby duszy i serca, wchodząc głęboko w ten doczesny świat: w seks, chciwość, pieniądze, nieumiarkowanie w jedzeniu i piciu, władzę, czy inne nałogi. Najświętsza Dziewico Maryjo, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami! Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!

This Sunday, we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. On the Third Sunday of Lent, in Year A of the Lectionary, we hear from the fourth chapter of John’s Gospel, as St. John the Evangelist tells us the story of Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well. We see an illustration of today’s Gospel story below in the beautiful painting of Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well by Sisto Badalocchio (1585-1620). The Samaritan woman at the well in today’s Gospel is a symbol for humanity after Original Sin. Original Sin wounded the human will and desire. St. Augustine teaches that love is the most
basic appetite of the soul. The soul moves outward from itself and desires union with all that is good, whether temporal or eternal. The question is how to direct this outward movement, thus properly ordering one’s loves. What, or who, do we choose to love? As a result of Original Sin, we do not always desire to love the right things, such as God and virtue. As a result of Original Sin, humans desire and pursue earthly goods with a lust that consumes them, even as it devours created good after created good with the desire to be satisfied and happy. Concupiscent desire is misdirected love and thus disordered desire, and we are never truly satisfied by the errant desires of concupiscence.
When reflecting upon the story of the Samaritan woman at the well in the Gospel of John, St. Augustine saw the well as a symbol of concupiscent desire. Concupiscent desire is called disordered because we do not order our love/desire in the right order. That which we should love and desire first (such as God) we love least and last, and that which we should love secondarily (earthly goods) we love and desire first and most. Wounded by concupiscence, we seek to satisfy the deepest hunger of the soul and heart with earthly, worldly goods, such as sex, pleasure, greed, power, money, food, drink, drugs, etc.
Just as a person keeps returning to a well for water, but never satisfies their thirst, so too concupiscent humans keep returning to our disordered, errant desires, but are never truly satisfied. Concupiscent desire leads to a pattern of repeated vice and addiction. Our Lord shows that the woman exhibits this obsessive, addictive nature of errant desire in regard to her relationships. When she says that she has no husband, Jesus bluntly states, “yes, you’ve had five, and the one you have now is not your husband.”
Jesus experienced the natural desire for earthly things like food, water, clothing, and shelter, so that we might experience the supernatural desire for God and heavenly things. Too often, though, we do not love or desire God or heavenly things. We tend to love and desire only earthly things and earthly pleasures. As expressed by the Samaritan woman at the well, humans wounded by concupiscence wallow in the temporary fixes of created goods rather than returning to the Creator of all. This disordered desire must be challenged and changed. Conversion is the grace initiated process of turning our loves back to God as the only source of all reality and the eternal good to which our love points. In the Gospel, Jesus calls the Samaritan woman at the well, and all of us, to conversion in our life.
Please pray for all who are sick with the coronavirus around the world. Pray for God’s mercy and protection, and pray for a cure and end to this epidemic. Please see the bulletin for new Archdiocesan guidelines and changes in practice during Mass related to coronavirus precautions. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us!
Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!
