October is the month of the Holy Rosary. So, I am sharing excerpts from a very good article I read by Gretchen R. Crowe, entitled Why the Rosary, Why Now? A case for why this devotion matters now more than ever . It’s easy for Catholics to take the Rosary for granted. We tend to purchase them as souvenirs, or carry them around with us, or even wear them — but we forget the immense power that they have when we actually pray them. And that’s really too bad, because a devotion to the Rosary can

be the answer to so many struggles in our 21st-century world. Our society today faces growing secularism and the disappearance of faith from the public square. We find ourselves confronting a world awash in the spread of evil and terrorism, war and violence. We are plagued by broken families, abounding distractions and a general lack of drive for holiness. But the Rosary can help. And we know this because Mary herself told us this 100 years ago in Fátima, Portugal, when she appeared six times to three shepherd children once a month from May to October 1917. She told them repeatedly: “Recite the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” We also know the great value of the Rosary because it has manifested its power time and time again in the lives of men and women of faith throughout history. This isn’t because the Rosary is magical; it’s because it brings us to Jesus. As the late Cardinal Francis E. George, archbishop of Chicago, said at the conclusion of the Year of the Rosary in 2003: the Rosary “brings us to the heart of the Gospel.”

In today’s typical lifestyle, it is easy to become distracted and overwhelmed by all of the “noise.” Technology is constantly demanding our attention. We sit in front of screens and, at the same time, look at smaller screens. We are drawn in by the lure of social-media alerts and use texting as a primary form of communication. We have developed an “always on” or “always available” mentality, and noise no longer knows any boundaries. A Nielson report issued in June 2016 said that Americans, on average, spend more than 10 hours a day looking at some type of screen. We also face an abundance of internal noise. We are distracted by interior barriers to prayer that often manifest themselves in the form of pride and self-centeredness. In all of these moments of difficulty, we can turn to the Rosary. The meditative quality of the devotion can help focus us and break through the external noise.

One of the intellectual, spiritual and even media giants of the 20th century was Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Archbishop Sheen also had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother, and he dedicated a book to her called “The World’s First Love, Mary, Mother of God.” He also spoke much about her in public. In a talk titled “The Woman I Love,” Archbishop Sheen indicated how Mary and the Church were intertwined because “as we discontinue our devotion to the Blessed Mother, there is always a decline in the love of the Church.” Fascinating, isn’t it? The less we pray to and venerate Mary, the less we are connected to the Church. It would follow, then, that the opposite also is true. The more we honor and pray to Mary, especially in her signature prayer of the Rosary, the more our love for and devotion to the Church will increase. And this is a devotion that we desperately need today. Catholics in the 21st century are experiencing a massive decline of love of the Church. The country is experiencing a rise in the religiously unaffiliated, or “nones.” It also is facing a large and growing gap between the moral teachings of the Church and the evolution of our secular society, which can be seen in recent developments such as the legalization of same-sex marriage, the growing acceptance of abortion, and the growing support for physician-assisted suicide. All are at odds with Church teaching, which means that Church teaching is increasingly at odds with the laws of the land. Part of the problem is a widespread lack of faith formation, particularly for many adult, cradle Catholics.

The beloved St. John Paul II wrote in Rosarium Virginis Mariae, an apostolic letter on the Rosary, that the devotion is “one of the traditional paths of Christian prayer directed to the contemplation of Christ’s face.” When we pray the Rosary, we meditate on different moments of Jesus’ life, all through the lens of His holy mother. This contemplation leads to a personal encounter. There is a startling dearth of Christian discipleship in the world today. As Christian disciples, however, we are called to set aside ego, selfishness and pride, and to instead prioritize others. It’s a countercultural life, but one which Mary and the Rosary can help to achieve.

If there’s one thing that’s certain about the Rosary, it’s that we can and should use it as a tool to help pray for and achieve peace. This was Mary’s message at Fátima: Continue to say the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, to obtain the peace of the world and the end of the war, because only she can obtain it. Many stories and holy people outline the protections that the Rosary can give, from the Battle of Lepanto, which saved the Christian West from Ottoman invasion, to St. Padre Pio, who called the Rosary “the weapon against the evils of the world today.” Venerable Pope Pius XII put forth that the Rosary is an antidote to the evils facing the world at the time, such as the nuclear age, communism and war. Pope Leo XIII, who reigned from 1878 to 1903, was plagued by politics and the drama of atheist humanism during his time as successor of Peter. In several portions of an astounding 11 encyclicals on the Rosary (Pope Leo was known as the “pope of the Rosary”). Pope Leo spoke out about the dangers of a world without belief. His words were strong and prophetic and are just as relatable now as they were then. Pope Leo believed strongly in the power of the Rosary to fight these growing troubles, and he was right. Praying the Rosary can help our world rediscover faith.

When wanting to achieve holiness, where else is it better to look than to those men and women who have already done so: that is, the saints themselves. “The saints and blesseds of paradise remind us, as pilgrims on Earth, that prayer, above all, is our sustenance for each day so that we never lose sight of our eternal destiny,” St. John Paul said. “For many of them the Rosary was the privileged instrument for their daily discourse with the Lord. The Rosary led them to an ever more profound intimacy with Christ and with the Blessed Virgin.” Through their example, we find inspiration for ourselves to pray the Rosary more often to draw closer in holiness through Mary and her Son.

Estamos plagados de familias rotas, abundantes distracciones y una falta general de unidad por la santidad. Pero el Rosario puede ayudar. Y lo sabemos, porque la misma María nos lo contó hace 100 años en Fátima,Portugal, cuando se le apareció seis veces a tres pastores una vez al mes, de mayo a octubre de 1917. Les decía en repetidas ocasiones: "Reciten el Rosario todos los días para obtener la paz para el mundo y el fin de la guerra ". También conocemos el gran valor del Rosario porque ha manifestado su poder una y otra vez en la vida de hombres y mujeres de fe a lo largo de la historia. Esto no es porque el Rosario sea mágico; es porque nos lleva a Jesús. Como dijo el fallecido cardenal Francis E. George, arzobispo de Chicago, al concluir el Año del Rosario en el 2003: el Rosario "nos lleva al corazón del Evangelio". En el estilo de vida típico de hoy en día, es fácil distraerse y ser abrumado por todo el "ruido". La tecnología exige constantemente nuestra atención. Nos sentamos frente a las pantallas y al mismo tiempo, miramos las pantallas más pequeñas. Estamos distraidos por el atractivo de las alertas de los medios sociales y usamos los mensajes de texto como una forma primaria de comunicación. Hemos desarrollado una mentalidad "siempre encendida" o "siempre disponible" y el ruido ya no conoce límites. Un informe de Nielson publicado en junio del 2016 dijo que los estadounidenses, en promedio, pasan más de 10 horas al día mirando algún tipo de pantalla. También nos enfrentamos a una abundancia de ruido interno. Nos distraen las barreras interiores a la oración que a menudo se manifiestan en forma de orgullo y egocentrismo. En todos estos momentos de dificultad, podemos recurrir al Rosario. La calidad meditativa de la devoción puede ayudar a enfocarnos y romper el ruido externo. Uno de los gigantes intelectuales, espirituales e incluso mediáticos del siglo XX fue el arzobispo Fulton J. Sheen. El arzobispo Sheen también tuvo una devoción profunda a la Santísima Madre y le dedicó un libro llamado "El primer amor del mundo, María, Madre de Dios". También habló mucho de Ella en público. En una charla titulada "La mujer que amo", el arzobispo Sheen indicó cómo María y la Iglesia estaban entrelazadas porque "al interrumpir nuestra devoción a la Santísima Madre, siempre hay un declive en el amor de la Iglesia". Fascinante, en cuanto menos oramos y veneramos a María, menos estamos conectados con la Iglesia. Se deduciría, entonces, que lo contrario también es cierto. Cuanto más honremos y rezemos a María, especialmente en su oración del rosario, más creceremos nuestro amor y devoción a la Iglesia. Y esta es una devoción que necesitamos desesperadamente hoy. Los católicos en el siglo XXI están experimentando un declive masivo de amor a la Iglesia. El país está experimentando un aumento en los religiosos no afiliados, o "nones". También se enfrenta a una brecha grande y creciente entre las enseñanzas morales de la Iglesia y la evolución de nuestra sociedad secular, que se puede ver en los últimos acontecimientos como el la legalización del matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo, la creciente aceptación del aborto y el creciente apoyo al suicidio médico asistido. Todos están en desacuerdo con la enseñanza de la Iglesia, lo que significa que la enseñanza de la Iglesia está cada vez más en desacuerdo con las leyes de la tierra. Parte del problema es una falta generalizada de formación de fe, particularmente para muchos católicos adultos. El estimado San Juan Pablo II escribió en el Rosario Virginis Mariae, una carta apostólica sobre el Rosario, que la devoción es "uno de los caminos tradicionales de la oración cristiana dirigida a la contemplación del rostro de Cristo". "El venerado Papa Pío XII planteó que el Rosario es un antídoto contra los males que enfrenta el mundo en ese momento, como la era nuclear, el comunismo y la guerra. El Papa León XIII, que reinó de 1878 a 1903, fue plagado por la política y el drama del humanismo ateo durante su tiempo como sucesor de Pedro. En varias porciones de las asombrosas 11 encíclicas sobre el Rosario (el Papa León fue conocido como el "Papa del Rosario"). El Papa León habló sobre los peligros de un mundo sin creencias. El Rosario los condujo a una intimidad cada vez más profunda con Cristo y con la Santísima Virgen ". A través de su ejemplo, nos inspiramos para rezar el Rosario con mayor frecuencia para acercarnos a la santidad a través de María y su Hijo.

Październik tradycyjnie jest miesiącem Różańca Świętego. Dlatego pragnę się dziś podzielić z Wami fragmentami artykułu Gretchen R. Crowe, w którym autorka usiłuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie, dlaczego nabożeństwo różańcowe jest dzisiaj ważniejsze niż kiedykolwiek. Łatwo jest myśleć o Różańcu jak o po prostu kolejnej, zwyczajnej modlitwie. Często kupujemy go jako pamiątkę z

podróży, nosimy go ze sobą – ale nie pamiętamy o nadzwyczajnej skuteczności jego odmawiania. To smutne, bowiem odmawianie dziesiątek Różańca może być rozwiązaniem wielu problemów trapiących nasz współczesny świat. Zmagamy się z postępującą sekularyzacją, wiara znika z przestrzeni publicznej. Żyjemy w świecie pełnym zła i terroryzmu, wojen i przemocy. Coraz więcej jest rozbitych rodzin, coraz więcej rzeczy rozprasza naszą uwagę i staje na przeszkodzie w dążeniu do świętości. Jednak już 100 lat temu w portugalskiej Fatimie, Matka Boża powiedziała nam, iż lekiem na to wszystko może być Różaniec. W okresie od maja do października roku 1917, Maryja sześciokrotnie objawiła się trójce rodzeństwa, wzywając do codziennego odmawiania Różańca w intencji pokoju na świecie oraz zakończenia wojny. Dowodem na wielką moc Różańca są również świadectwa wielu świętych na przestrzeni wieków. Różaniec sam w sobie nie ma jakichś magicznych właściwości; on po prostu przybliża nas do Jezusa. W 2003, na zakończenie Roku Wiary, nieodżałowany metropolita Chicago: kardynał Francis George, powiedział, że „Różaniec stanowi sedno Ewangelii”. W dzisiejszym świecie jest przytłaczająco wiele różnego rodzaju „szumu” , a technologia nadmiernie nas absorbuje. Często przesiadujemy przed dużymi ekranami, równocześnie patrząc na mniejsze ekrany. Jesteśmy uzależnieni od portali społecznościowych, a podstawową formą komunikacji są SMSy. Nasza mentalność przypomina statusy na wspomnianych portalach: „Zawsze dostępny”. Hałas przekroczył już wszelkie granice. Z przeprowadzonego w czerwcu w 2016 roku sondażu wynika, że Amerykanie spędzają średnio 10 godzin, wpatrzeni w ekrany tabletów, komputerów czy smartfonów. Musimy stawić czoła wewnętrznemu hałasowi oraz własnemu egocentryzmu, odgradzającemu nas od modlitwy. We wszystkich tych trudnych chwilach możemy wziąć do ręki Różaniec. Medytując nad Tajemnicami Różańca, możemy przebić się przez cały otaczający nas hałas. Do grona wielkich, XX-wiecznych czcicieli Matki Bożej należał arcybiskup Fulton J. Sheen (gigant intelektualny, duchowy, a także medialny). Napisał o Niej książkę zatytułowaną: „Matka Boża: wielka miłość całego świata”. Nie wstydził się również mówić o Maryi publicznie. Arcybiskup Sheen powiedział, że Maryja i Kościół są ze sobą ściśle związani, albowiem kiedy nie poświęcamy Mary dostatecznej uwagi, cierpi nasza miłość do całego Kościoła. Zatem, jeśli będziemy bardziej kochać Najświętszą Panienkę (zwłaszcza odmawiając wywodzący się od Niej Różaniec), wzrośnie też nasze oddanie Kościołowi. Właśnie dlatego nabożeństwo różańcowe jest dzisiaj tak bardzo potrzebne i istotne. Katolicy w XXI wieku masowo odwracają się od Kościoła. Rośnie liczba osób niezwiązanych z żadną religią. Szerzy się przepaść pomiędzy kościelnym nauczaniem o moralności, a rozwojem współczesnego społeczeństwa. Szczególnie dobrze widać to w legalizacji małżeństw jednopłciowych, czy w rosnącym przyzwoleniu na aborcję lub wspomagane medycznie samobójstwo. Wszystko to jest sprzeczne z nauką Kościoła, czyli istnieje coraz większy rozdźwięk między Kościołem, a prawami stanowionymi przez władze państwa. Problemem dla części dorosłych katolików jest tu brak formacji duchowej. W liście apostolskim dotyczącym Różańca: Rosarium Virginis Mariae, święty Jan Paweł II pisze, iż modlitwa ta jest „drogą głoszenia i zgłębiania misterium Chrystusa”. Odmawiając Różaniec, wspominamy różne chwile z życia Jezusa, widziane z perspektywy Jego Najświętszej Matki. Taka kontemplacja prowadzi do osobistego doświadczenia. W dzisiejszym świecie, prawdziwi uczniowie Chrystusa są niestety w mniejszości. I właśnie jako prawdziwi chrześcijanie, musimy poskromić własne ego, odłożyć na bok osobiste potrzeby i poświęcić się służbie innym. Jest to postawa kontrkulturowa, ale do przyjęcia z pomocą Maryi oraz Różańca. Różaniec Święty może, a nawet powinien, być wykorzystywany do zaprowadzania pokoju. Takie było przesłanie Matki Bożej Fatimskiej: Odmawiajcie Różaniec codziennie, na Moją część, a także w intencji pokoju na świecie i zakończenia wojny, do którego mogę doprowadzić. Zachowało się wiele świadectw o łaskach wyproszonych za wstawiennictwem Matki Bożej Różańcowej – od Bitwy pod Lepanto, w której chrześcijańska flota pokonała Imperium Osmańskie, do św. Ojca Pio, nazywającego Różaniec „skuteczną bronią przeciw wszelkiemu złu”. Papież Pius XII widział w modlitwie różańcowej antidotum na zagrożenia jego czasów: wynalezienie bomby atomowej, komunizm i wojnę. Pontyfikat Leona XIII (1878-1903) zdominowała europejska polityka oraz szerzący się wówczas, ateistyczny humanizm. Owy papież (zwany „różańcowym”, z powodu aż 11 encyklik poświęconych tej modlitwie) zdecydowanie wypowiadał się na temat życia w świecie pozbawionym wiary. Jego słowa na ten temat są równie aktualne dzisiaj, co w XIX wieku. Papież Leon bardzo wierzył w to, iż moc Różańca może przeciwdziałać narastającym zagrożeniom. Dzięki Różańcowi możemy na nowo odkryć własną wiarę. Chcąc osiągnąć świętość, najlepiej brać przykład z tych, którzy już tego dokonali. W 2003 roku, święty Jan Paweł II powiedział: „Nam, ziemskim pielgrzymom, święci i błogosławieni w raju przypominają, że tym, co na co dzień nas umacnia, byśmy nigdy nie stracili z oczu tego naszego wiecznego przeznaczenia, jest przede wszystkim modlitwa. Dla wielu z nich szczególnie ważną pomocą w codziennym dialogu z Panem był różaniec — modlitwa, której był poświęcony cały, zakończony wczoraj, rok. Różaniec prowadził ich do coraz bliższej zażyłości z Chrystusem i Najświętszą Dziewicą”.

Guest speakers Maureen Leece, a school psychologist and educational consultant, and Robert Leece, an expert in the area of parent-child relationships, will present "The Resourceful Teen: A Blueprint for Raising Problem Solvers and Solution Seekers." Student Council News - As I mentioned last week our Student Council elections are over and they have begun meeting to set their plans for the year. We are happy to announce our Executive Board along with our classroom representatives. The St. Joseph Student Council has undertaken the planning of two projects for the fall. We are attempting to reach out to one or two schools in Mexico affected by the Earthquake, we hope to collect and send school supplies to those schools. We will be making a donation to Catholic Relief Services who are helping families affected by Hurricane Irma and Maria as well as the victims of the Earthquake. The Student Council is also planning activities for Red Ribbon Week. Hard work pays off - Our children and teachers have been working very hard in their schoolwork. As a reward our children and staff were treated to the play Robin Hood, performed by the Windy City Players.

Their productions are always very enjoyable and easily relatable for the different age levels of our school children. The new year of our 52-Pick-up Raffle begins next week! The ticket will be drawn Tuesday morning, October 3rd.

CELEBRATION The Hispanic Ministry is selling raffle tickets after the 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. mass to raise funds for Our Lady of Guadalupe. The grand prize is a Generac 2800 PSI Power Washer donated by the Village of Bedford Park. The tickets are $1. Thank you for your support. PARKING LOT RESURFACING

The big parking lot is being resurfaced and will be closed Friday, Oct. 6 and most of the day Sat-urday, Oct 7. The parking lot should be open in time for 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday and all day Sunday. When the parking lot is closed, please park on the street. When it is open and you choose to park there, we are urging caution as the lot will be graded. Thank you. W związku z koniecznośćią wyłożenia nowego asfaltu, parking przed parafią pozostanie zamknięty w piątek, 6 października, jak tez przez większą część dnia w sobotę, 7 października. IS “STEPPIN’ OUT” FOR A TASTE OF CHICAGO’S

FAMOUS PIZZAS!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10

The group will visit three famous pizzerias and learn the science behind ingredient selection and baking methods and the physics

of how the best pizzas are prepared.

The first stop is Pizano’s Pizza

and Pasta in Downtown Chicago. The family has ties to the creation

of deep dish pizza in 1943. the second stop is Flo & Santo’s in

the South Loop for “South Side” thin crust with Italian and Polish flavors. Finally, the third and last

stop will be at Pequod’s in Lincoln Park for their burnt

cheese caramelized crust with sweet sauce.

The bus leaves at 9:45 a.m. and

returns at 3:30 p.m. to the Foran Funeral Home parking lot. The

cost is $51 per person, which includes the tour, pizza and

beverages. Reservations are due by

tomorrow, Oct. 2 by calling 708-458-0208.
