Elijah Rescued by an Angel

La semana pasada, escuchamos acerca de la comida milagrosa en el Antiguo Testamento: Moisés y el maná en el desierto. Esta semana, escuchamos acerca de algunos alimentos más milagrosos en el Antiguo Testamento: un ángel alimenta al profeta Elías en el desierto. En la lectura de hoy, encontramos al profeta Elías sentado bajo un árbol de retama en el desierto. Es importante que sepamos algunos antecedentes de lo que le sucedió a Elías anteriormente. Elías defendió a Dios al confrontar al rey Ahab por su maldad y a su esposa malvada, la reina Jezabel, por escucharla al abandonar la adoración a Dios por los ídolos paganos, el Baal. El profeta Elías se enfrentó a los falsos profetas de Baal en el Monte Carmelo. Elías fue superado en número 450 a 1, pero Dios estaba con él. En una demostración del poder de Dios, solo el sacrificio de Elías se consumió con fuego, a pesar

de que fue rociado con 12 jarras grandes de agua, por lo que Elías triunfa. Como castigo, todos los profetas falsos de Baal fueron asesinados. Elías demostró tanto al rey Acab como a los israelitas que Baal es un dios falso e impotente. Solo el Dios de Israel es el verdadero Dios. Sin embargo, ahora Elías enfrentó la ira de Jezabel, Reina de Israel y devota discípula de Baal. La vida de Elías ahora está amenazada. Jezabel está furiosa porque Elías mató a todos los profetas de Baal. Ella está consumida de rabia hacia él. Jezabel jura hacer lo mismo con él y planea su venganza. Ella ordenó que Elías sea ejecutado. Jezabel quiere al profeta Elías muerto. Es una situación terrible para él. Elías escucha sobre esto y huye al desierto. Este es el punto en la historia donde encontramos a Elías hoy. Después de huir para salvar su vida, finalmente cae agotado en el desierto bajo la única sombra que puede encontrar, la sombra de un árbol ramoso. Sintiéndose mal por sí mismo, Elías reza por la muerte. Dios decide en cambio darle comida. Él tiene un largo viaje por delante, y no hay tiempo para abatirse. Dios envía un ángel para ayudarlo, quien le trae un pan cocido en las brasas para comer y un jarro de agua para beber. La imagen que vemos es una hermosa pintura titulada Elijah Rescued by an Angel (Elías rescatado por un ángel). Como vemos en la pintura, Elías es dirigido por el ángel para ir al Monte Horeb. El Monte Horeb es un lugar donde Dios se dio a conocer en el momento clave de la historia de Israel. Monte Horeb es otro nombre para Monte Sinaí. Monte Sinaí es el lugar donde Dios le habla a Moisés en la zarza ardiente. El Monte Sinaí es el lugar donde Dios primero hizo su pacto con Israel, entregando los Diez Mandamientos a Moisés. El viaje a la montaña sagrada tomará cuarenta días y cuarenta noches, por lo que Dios envía un ángel a Elías con pan y agua y le dice que se alimente. Elías miró y allí, en su cabeza, había un pan cocido en las brasas y un jarro de agua. Después de que comió y bebió, se acostó otra vez, pero el ángel del Señor regresó por segunda vez, lo tocó y le ordenó: "Levántate y come, de lo contrario el viaje será demasiado largo para ti". Se levantó, comió y bebió; luego fortalecido por esa comida, caminó cuarenta días y cuarenta noches hasta la montaña de Dios, Horeb ". La comida de Elías no es comida ordinaria. ¿Alguna vez ha oído hablar qué con tan solo pan y agua le puede dar fuerza a alguien para caminar cuarenta días por un desierto estéril, solo para llegar a una montaña igualmente estéril? La comida que Elías recibió bajo el árbol de retama simplemente apunta a algo aún mayor, a la comida que verdaderamente satisface y conduce a la vida eterna. Esta historia del Antiguo Testamento apunta a una comida y bebida aún más notable que Dios pondrá a su disposición a través de su Hijo, Jesús. El cumplimiento de todos estos presagios es la propia carne y sangre de Jesús, que debe comerse sacramentalmente bajo la forma de pan y vino, en la Eucaristía. Dios se preocupó lo suficiente como para que Elías tuviera un ángel que le trajera una comida especial. Dios hizo una mejor para nosotros. Dios envió a su Hijo, que ambos trajeron la comida y él mismo es la comida. Oímos a Jesús decir en el Evangelio de hoy: "Yo soy el pan vivo que descendió del cielo; el que come este pan vivirá para siempre; y el pan que daré es mi carne para la vida del mundo ". Este miércoles es la solemnidad de la Asunción de la Santísima Virgen María. Es un día sagrado de obligación. Por favor, consulte el boletín para los horarios de las misas. Zeszłotygodniowe czytanie dotyczyło Mojżesza i cudownej manny, jaką Bóg zesłał Izraelitom na pustyni. W tym tygodniu pozostajemy w Starym Testamencie i tematyce cudownego pożywienia. Anioł nakarmił proroka Eliasza, ukrywającego się w puszczy. Dobrze jest wiedzieć, co działo się z Eliaszem wcześniej. Otóż bronił on Boga, krytykując króla Achaba (który za namową swojej żony Izebel wprowadził we własnym kraju kult bożka Baala). Na Górze Karmel, Eliasz stawił czoła fałszywym prorokom Baala, chociaż ich było 450, a on sam jeden. Ale z Eliaszem był Bóg. Dzięki Bożej mocy, jedynie ofiarę Eliasza strawił ogień, mimo iż próbowano go ugasić dwunastoma

dzbanami wody. Eliasz zwyciężył, a prorocy Baala zginęli. Zarówno król Achab, jak i Izraelici zrozumieli, że Baal jest fałszywym, bezsilnym bożkiem. Jedynym, Prawdziwym Bogiem jest Bóg Izraela. Na Eliasza spadł teraz gniew królowej Izebel – oddanej wyznawczyni Baala. Królowa jest wściekła na Eliasza za to, że ten uśmiercił wszystkich proroków Baala. Izebel skazuje Eliasza na śmierć. Dowiedziawszy się o tym, prorok ucieka do puszczy. W tym właśnie momencie rozpoczyna się dzisiejsze czytanie. Uciekając przez dłuższy czas, Eliasz w końcu pada wycieńczony pod drzewem janowca. Eliasza ogarnia żal, modli się o śmierć. Zamiast tego, Bóg daje pożywienie: anioł przynosi mu podpłomyk oraz dzban z wodą. Czeka go bowiem długa podróż i nie ma czasu na użalanie się nad sobą. Do dzisiejszego czytania wybrałem piękny obraz, zatytułowany: „Anioł ratuje Eliasza”. Z tego, co widać na obrazie, anioł nakazuje Eliaszowi udać się na Górę Horeb. To na Górze Horeb Bóg objawił się w kluczowym momencie dziejów Izraela. Góra Horeb to inna nazwa Góry Synaj. Na Górze Synaj Bóg, pod postacią gorejącego krzewu, przemówił do Mojżesza. Na tej górze Bóg zawarł pierwsze przymierze z Ludem Izraela i podarował Mojżeszowi tablice z Dziesięcioma Przykazaniami. Podróż na szczyt świętej góry zajmie 40 dni i 40 nocy, zatem Bóg posyła Eliaszowi posiłek. „Eliasz spojrzał, a oto przy jego głowie podpłomyk i dzban z wodą. Zjadł więc i wypił, i znów się położył. Powtórnie anioł Pański wrócił i trącając go, powiedział: «Wstań, jedz, bo przed tobą długa droga». Powstawszy zatem, zjadł i wypił. Następnie mocą tego pożywienia szedł czterdzieści dni i czterdzieści nocy aż do Bożej góry Horeb” (I Księga Królewska 19:6-8). Pożywienie proroka Eliasza nie jest zwyczajne. Jak to możliwe, że zwykły podpłomyk i dzban wody mogą dać człowiekowi siłę do czterdziestodniowej wędrówki przez pustynię i wejście na szczyt góry? Posiłek, jaki Eliasz otrzymał pod janowcem, jest zaledwie drogowskazem do czegoś znacznie wspanialszego, co prawdziwie zaspokaja głód i prowadzi do życia wiecznego. Opowieść o Eliaszu jest zapowiedzią jeszcze wspanialszego pożywienia, które Pan ześle ludziom przez Swego Syna, Jezusa Chrystusa. Chodzi tu o Jego Ciało i Krew, przeznaczone do sakramentalnego spożycia w Eucharystii, pod postacią chleba i wina. Bóg troszczył się o Eliasza i posłał mu przez anioła specjalny posiłek. Nam Pan dał coś lepszego: dał nam Swojego Syna, Który jednocześnie przynosi pożywienie i Samemu Jest tym Pożywieniem. W dzisiejszej Ewangelii według św. Jana 6:51, Chrystus powiada: „Ja jestem chlebem żywym, który zstąpił z nieba. Jeśli kto spożywa ten chleb, będzie żył na wieki. Chlebem, który Ja dam, jest moje ciało za życie świata»”. W nadchodzącą środę przypada Święto Wniebowzięcia Najświętszej Maryi Panny. Jest to święto obowiązkowe dla wszystkich katolików. Szczegóły liturgii w tym dniu znajdziecie w biuletynie. FR. BOB’S BRIEFS Last week, we heard about miraculous food in the Old Testament: Moses and manna in the desert. This week, we hear about some more miraculous food in the Old Testament: an Angel feeds the prophet Elijah in the desert. In the reading today, we find the prophet Elijah sitting under a broom tree in the desert. Some background of what happened to Elijah earlier is important for us to know. Elijah defended God by confronting King Ahab for his wickedness and his evil wife Queen Jezebel, for listening to her in abandoning the worship of God for pagan idols, the Baal. The prophet Elijah faced off against the false prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel. Elijah was outnumbered 450 to 1, but God was with him. In a display of God’s power, only Elijah’s sacrifice was consumed with fire, even though it was doused with 12 large jars of water, and so Elijah is triumphant. As punishment,

all the false prophets of Baal were killed. Elijah demonstrated to both King Ahab and the Israelites that Baal is a false, powerless god. Only the God of Israel is the true God.

However, now Elijah faced the wrath of Jezebel, Queen of Israel and devoted disciple of Baal. Elijah’s life is now threatened. Jezebel is furious that Elijah put to death all the prophets of Baal. She is consumed with rage towards him. Jezebel vows to do the same to him and plans her revenge. She ordered that Elijah is to be executed. Jezebel wants the prophet Elijah dead. It is a terrible situation for him. Elijah hears about this and fleas into the desert. This is the point in the story where we find Elijah today. After running for his life, he finally drops exhausted in the desert under the only shade he can find, under the shade of a broom tree. Feeling sorry for himself, Elijah prays for death. God decides instead to give him food. He has a long journey ahead of him, and there is no time for moping. God sends an angel to help him, who brings him a hearth cake to eat and a jug of water to drink. The picture that we see is a beautiful painting entitled Elijah Rescued by an Angel. As we see in the painting, Elijah is directed by the angel to go to Mount Horeb. Mount Horeb is a place where God has made Himself known in the key moment of Israel’s history. Mount Horeb is another name for Mount Sinai. Mount Sinai is the place where God speaks to Moses in the burning bush. Mount Sinai is the place where God first made his covenant with Israel, giving the Ten Commandments to Moses. The journey to the holy mountain will take forty days and forty nights, so God sends an angel to Elijah with bread and water and tells him to take nourishment. Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. After he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the Lord came back a second time, touched him, and ordered, "Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!" He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.”

Elijah’s food is no ordinary food. Have you ever heard of a single hearth cake of bread and water giving someone strength to trudge 40 days through barren desert, only to arrive at an equally barren mountain? The food that Elijah received under the broom tree, merely points forward to something even greater, to food that truly satisfies and leads to eternal life. This Old Testament story points forward to an even more remarkable food and drink that God will make available through His Son, Jesus. The fulfillment of all these foreshadowing is Jesus 'own flesh and blood, to be eaten sacramentally under the forms of bread and wine, in the Eucharist. God cared enough for Elijah to have an angel bring him a special meal. God did one better for us. God sent his Son, who both brought the meal and is Himself the meal. We hear Jesus say in today’s Gospel, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." This Wednesday is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a holy day of obligation. Please see bulletin for Mass times. It is very hard to believe but on Monday, August 20th the 2018 – 2019 school year will begin. We have filled all of our positions having found a junior-high math teacher to replace Mr. O’Connell. I would like to introduce Ms. Kimberly Adamczyk. Ms. Adamczyk comes to us from County Clubs Hills where she was a junior-high math teacher. She has experience teaching math at the high school level and her background includes a Master’s Degree with an emphasis in mathematics, from NIU. We are very pleased to have Ms. Adamczyk join our faculty. REGISTRATION CONTINUES. We have room in most grades and have received a special Rise Scholars Grant for new families. To qualify a family must show a financial need and their children must have attended a public school during the 2017 – 2018 school year. The grant is for children entering 1st through 8th grade. If you are thinking about St. Joseph for your children, please call the school office or stop in to see me. WE NEED TO SPEND THE MONEY OR WE WILL LOSE IT. The grant is good for three to five years. Please contact me for more information. Today following the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. Mass we will be having an Open House. Please stop by for coffee and, you will also be able to tour our school. Please Note: I truly appreciate the generosity of our families toward the Green City Bins in the parking lot. The company added a third and will try to come more frequently. The company has asked me to remind people that what they collect is clothes and shoes. The do not recycle books or small appliances that has been one reason why our bins are filling so quickly. The group will begin the day with a guided tour of Loyola University’s

Cuneo Mansion and Gardens, the 100 acre estate in Vernon Hills built for the

founder of General Electric.

Lunch will be at Route 41 Roadhouse in Wadsworth which features some

fabulous home style cooking!

After lunch, the group will visit the Shiloh House, a 25-room mansion built as the residence of Zion’s founder, Dr. John Alexander Dowie. Dr. Dowie is is

credited with establishing the Christian Catholic Church in Zion and the City of Zion itself. Zion is known as one of the most representative religious utopias

and planned industrial communities of the 20th Century.

The bus leaves at 8 a.m. and returns at 5:00 p.m. to the Foran Funeral Home

parking lot, 7300 W. Archer Ave., Summit. The cost is $51 per person which includes the tours and lunch.
