Fr. Bob’s Briefs

In the first reading from the Book of Genesis last week, we heard the story of how the Lord appeared to the patriarch Abraham and how he was visited by three angels. This week, the first reading from Genesis continues with the story of Abraham and his three heavenly visitors. In today’s reading, we hear how the Lord is displeased and angry with the people of Sodom because of their sinful way of life. God tells Abraham that He will destroy the city and all its inhabitants because of their sin. Abraham pleads with the Lord to not destroy the evil city because that will result in the death of inno-cent people too. The reading from Genesis 18 gives a rather detailed and long account of Abraham’s conversation and pleading with God to not destroy the city. Abraham pleads to God to spare the city from destruction if God can find first 50 innocent inhabitants, then 45, then 30, then 20, and finally 10 innocent people in Sodom. Abraham’s actions are bold. Once is enough, two times is pushing

your luck, but Abraham pleads God down five times! Five times, Abraham dares to ask God to change His mind! Abra-ham is earnestly pleading, entreating for the salvation of any innocent person. The Venetian painter Francesco Fontebas-so (1707-1769) beautifully illustrates the scene of Abraham pleading with God and interceding for Sodom in his painting Abraham and the Three Angels. In this picture, we see the three angels on the right, surrounded by clouds, signifying that they are visitors from heaven above. On the left is the patriarch Abraham, wear-ing gold and blue garments. We recognize that Abra-ham is praying because Fontebasso portrays Abra-ham with the usual posture associated with prayer: kneeling down and hands folded. Both the first read-ing and Gospel focus on prayer. What is prayer? Our English word pray comes from Middle English (13th century), which means “to ask earnestly, beg.” This Middle English word is derived from an old French (9th century) word preier. The old French word preier has its origin in the Latin word precare, meaning “ask earnestly, beg, entreat.” If prayer means “to ask ear-nestly, beg,” what are we to ask earnestly, beg for? The Catechism of the Catholic Church helps us understand the meaning and purpose of Christian prayer. “Christian petition is centered on the desire and search for the Kingdom to come, in keeping with the teachings of Christ. There is a hierarchy in these petitions: we pray first for the Kingdom, then for what is necessary to welcome it and cooperate with its coming” (CCC 2632). In the “Our Father,” which we read in the Gospel today, we hear Jesus teach us to pray “your Kingdom come.” Jesus teaches us to pray first for the Kingdom. The Catechism repeats that we should pray for the Kingdom, but what does this mean? The great, Doctor of the Church, St. Augustine helps us understand. Writing on today’s Gospel, St. Augustine teaches, “Your kingdom come. Will the kingdom of God not come unless we ask for it? That kingdom will exist after the end of the world. God has a kingdom forever. May that kingdom come within us and may we be found in that kingdom. That is our petition. Of course it will come. How will that benefit you if it finds you at the left hand? In this petition, you also a wish a blessing on yourself. It is on your own behalf that you pray. In this petition, this is what you desire and long for, namely, that you may so live as to have a share in the kingdom that will be given to all the saints.” Please pray for all the young people gathered for World Youth Day (July26-31) in Krakow, Poland. May all young people open their hearts to the Kingdom of God, and may the Kingdom come in their lives! May our Blessed Mother Mary help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
