The Second Sunday Of Advent

“St. John (the Baptist) lives on God’s word,

teaching, and wisdom, he takes it in, and then, like Ezekiel, speaks the

word of God to the house of Israel.”

On this Second Sunday of Advent, St. John the Baptist makes an appearance once again. We hear from the Gospel of Mark today, “John the Baptist appeared in the desert. John was clothed in camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. He fed on locusts and wild honey.” The Scriptures present St. John the Baptist as a rather bizarre figure, as we see illustrated beautifully in this painting of St. John the Baptist. First, St. John the Baptist dresses strangely. We hear in the Gospel of Mark that John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt. If we go to the 2 Kings, in the Old Testament, we find that the prophet Elijah wore “a hairy garment with a leather girdle about his loins (2 Kings 1:8). Thus, St. John the Baptist wore exactly what Elijah did. In addition, we read in the Book of Zechariah that a hairy mantle was assumed by a

prophet once called and the mark of their calling to be a prophet (Zech 13:4). Thus, St. John the Baptist wears the traditional garment of a prophet.

Second, St. John the Baptist eats strangely. We hear in the Gospel of Mark that John fed on locusts and wild honey. Locusts were considered a clean food under the Mosaic Law. We read in the Book of Leviticus 11:22-23, “hence you may eat the following: various kinds of locusts, various kinds of grasshoppers, various kinds of katydids, and the various kinds of crickets. All other winged insects that have four legs are loathsome to you.” John’s subsistence on locusts and wild honey, rather than eating normal, comfortable foods like bread and wine, is a clear expression in the Gospels of St. John the Baptist’s distinct desert wilderness life, different from others. The early Church Father Origen teaches this reason for John to eat locusts: “John ate locusts, suggesting that the people of God were being nourished by a word that traveled high aloft in the air and had not yet passed over the earth.”

St. John also eats honey. In the Old Testament, we read about an experience of the prophet Ezekiel. “He [God] said to me: Son of man, eat what is before you; eat this scroll, then go, speak to the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth and he gave me the scroll to eat. I ate it, and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth. He said: Son of man, go now to the house of Israel, and speak my words to them” (Ez 3:1-4). Likewise, we hear God say in the Book of Proverbs, “if you eat honey, my son, because it is good, if virgin honey is sweet to your taste; such, you must know, is wisdom to your soul” (Proverbs 24:13-14). Thus, honey is equated with God’s word, teaching, and wisdom. St. John lives on God’s word, teaching, and wisdom, he takes it in, and then, like Ezekiel, speaks the word of God to the house of Israel.

Yes, St. John the Baptist is peculiar and strange, but he accepts that he is bizarre from others. Unlike us! That’s the problem with many Catholics today. Catholics don’t want to be different from society and the world. Many Catholics today look at the popular culture around them, Godless secular progressives, and want to be like them, act like them, and do what everyone else is doing, instead of following their Catholic faith! Many Catholics don’t want to be different. Instead of being like St. John the Baptist, who stood solid in his faith and morals, and counter to the popular culture around him, many Catholics are weak in their faith and morals, yield the popular culture around them, and imitate it.

This year, Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday evening and Christmas falls on a Monday. Because Christmas falls on a Monday, Catholics are obligated to attend Mass on two consecutive days: one for the Fourth Sunday of Advent and one for Christmas. The celebration of the Fourth Sunday of Advent is an important part of the liturgical year and should be celebrated as such. To do otherwise, minimizes the importance of this final Sunday before the celebration of Christmas. There is no dispensation from the obligation of participation at Mass on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. It is expected that when Christmas falls on a Monday, as it does this year, that you have to go to Mass twice. You can’t just go to one Mass Sunday evening, thinking it will cover both. Catholics are obliged to celebrate Mass for BOTH the Fourth Sunday in Advent AND Christmas. There are several options for how to fulfill your Sunday and Christmas obligations this year: 1) Go to a Saturday evening Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Sunday evening Mass (Christmas obligation) 2) Go to a Saturday evening Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Monday Mass (Christmas obligation) 3) Go to a Sunday morning Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Sunday evening Mass (Christmas obligation) 4) Go to a Sunday morning Mass (Sunday obligation) and a Monday Mass (Christmas obligation) Thank you to all the parishioners who supported our Christmas Giving Tree and bought presents for needy kids. En este segundo domingo de Adviento, San Juan el Bautista aparece una vez más. Hoy escuchamos en el Evangelio de Marcos: "Juan el Bautista apareció en el desierto". Juan estaba vestido con una saya de pelo de camello, y un cinturón de cuero alrededor de su cintura. Se alimentaba de saltamontes y miel silvestre. "Las Escrituras presentan a San Juan Bautista como una figura bastante extraña, como vemos bellamente ilustrado en esta pintura de San Juan Bautista. Primero, San Juan el Bautista se viste de manera extraña. En el Evangelio de Marcos, escuchamos que Juan llevaba una prenda hecha de pelo de camello y un cinturón de cuero. Debido a que la Navidad cae en lunes, los católicos estamos obligados a asistir a Misa en dos días consecutivos: una por el cuarto domingo de Adviento y la otroa por la Navidad. La celebración del Cuarto Domingo de Adviento es una parte importante del año litúrgico y debe celebrarse como tal. De lo contrario, minimiza la importancia de este domingo final antes de la celebración de Navidad. No hay dispensa de la obligación de participar en la Misa del Cuarto Domingo de Adviento. Se espera que cuando la Navidad sea un lunes, como lo es este año, tenga que asistir a la Misa dos veces. No puedes ir a una misa el domingo por la tarde, pensando que cubrirá ambas cosas. Los católicos están obligados a celebrar la Misa por TANTO el cuarto domingo de Adviento y Navidad. W tę II Niedzielę Adwentu spotykamy znowu świętego Jana Chrzciciela. „Wystąpił Jan Chrzciciel na pustyni i głosił chrzest nawrócenia na odpuszczenie grzechów. Ciągnęła do niego cała judzka kraina oraz wszyscy mieszkańcy Jerozolimy i przyjmowali od niego chrzest w rzece Jordan, wyznając [przy tym] swe grzechy. Jan nosił odzienie z sierści wielbłądziej i pas skórzany około bioder, a żywił się szarańczą i miodem leśnym”. Święty Jan przedstawiony jest w Biblii jako postać trochę dziwaczna; tak samo zresztą, jak na niniejszym pięknym obrazie. Po pierwsze: w Ewangelii św. Marka widzimy, że Jan ubierał się dosyć dziwnie. Nosił odzienie z sierści wielbłądziej i skórzany pas. Z kolei Druga Księga Królewska Starego Testamentu (1:8) tak opisuje

proroka Eliasza: „Był to człowiek w płaszczu z sierści i pasem skórzanym przepasany dokoła bioder”. Nosił on więc to samo, co święty Jan. Dodatkowo, w Księdze Zachariasza jest mowa o tym, że płaszcz z sierści stanowi oznakę powołania proroka (13:4). Po drugie: święty Jan ma dziwne zwyczaje żywieniowe. Jadł bowiem miód i szarańczę. Według Prawa Mojżeszowego, szarańczę uważano za pożywienie czyste. W Księdze Kapłańskiej (11:22-23) czytamy: „Następujące spośród nich możecie jeść: wszelkie gatunki szarańczy, wszelkie gatunki soleam, wszelkie gatunki chargol i wszelkie gatunki chagab. Wszystkie inne gatunki latających owadów czworonożnych będą dla was obrzydliwością”. Tym, co wyraźnie odróżnia pustelnicze życie św. Jan, jest jego pożywienie: szarańcza i miód, a nie coś bardziej sycącego, jak na przykład chleb i wino. Według Orygenesa, jednego z Ojców Kościoła, św. Jan żywił się szarańczą, aby ukazać, że Lud Boży żywiony jest Słowem, które unosiło się w powietrzu i nie dotknęło jeszcze ziemi. Święty Jan spożywa także miód. W Starym Testamencie znajduje się epizod z życia proroka Ezechiela: „A On rzekł do mnie: Synu człowieczy, zjedz to, co masz przed sobą. Zjedz ten zwój i idź przemawiać do Izraelitów! Coś podobnego Pan mówi w Księdze Przysłów (24:13-14): „Synu, jedz miód, bo jest dobry, bo plaster miodu jest słodki dla podniebienia. Podobnie - wiedz - mądrość dla twej duszy, posiądziesz ją - przyszłe życie masz pewne, nie zawiedzie cię twoja nadzieja”. Miód symbolizuje tutaj Słowo, nauczanie i mądrość Bożą. To jest główne pożywienie świętego Jana. On zjada Słowo, a potem przemawia do domu Izraela. Owszem – święty Jan wydaję się dziwny, inny niż reszta, ale (w przeciwieństwie do nas!) on to akceptuje. Tu właśnie tkwi problem z wieloma współczesnymi katolikami. Katolicy chcą się dopasować do społeczeństwa i świata, nie chcą być inni. Wielu katolików daje się porwać współczesnej popkulturze, progresywnym, świeckim trendom, zamiast codziennie żyć własną wiarą! Zamiast naśladować świętego Jana Chrzciciela, który posiadał mocny kręgosłup moralny i silną wiarę, wielu katolików ma słabą wiarę i moralność. Ślepo naśladują współczesną kulturę, podążają za trendami. Wigilia w tym roku przypada w niedzielę, a Święta zaczynają się w poniedziałek. Dlatego katolicy zobowiązani są do uczestnictwa we Mszy przez dwa kolejne dni: raz na IV Niedzielę Adwentu i raz na Boże Narodzenie. Nabożeństwo IV Niedzieli Adwentu stanowi istotną część roku liturgicznego i powinna być traktowana poważnie. W przeciwnym razie, umniejszamy wagę ostatniej niedzieli przed Bożym Narodzeniem. Kościół nie przewiduje dyspensy od udziału we Mszy na IV Niedzielę Adwentu. Kiedy Boże Narodzenie przypada w poniedziałek, jak w tym roku, zobowiązani jesteśmy do udziału we Mszy dwukrotnie Nie możemy pójść wyłącznie na niedzielną liturgię, myśląc, że upieczemy dwie pieczenie przy jednym ogniu. Zarówno IV Niedziela Adwentu, jak i Boże Narodzenie, to dla katolików dni obowiązkowe. Wasze zobowiązanie w tym względzie możecie wypełnić na kilka różnych sposobów: 1. Udział we Mszy wieczornej w sobotę i w niedzielę, 2. Udział w sobotniej Mszy wieczornej oraz w liturgii w poniedziałek, 3. Udział we Mszy w niedzielę: rano i wieczorem, 4. Udział w porannej Mszy niedzielnej oraz w liturgii poniedziałkowej. Bóg Zapłać wszystkim parafianom, którzy wsparli nasze Świąteczne Drzewko Darów i kupili prezenty dla najbiedniejszych dzieci. Módlmy się o trwały pokój na świecie. Święta Maryjo, Matko Nieustającej Pomocy, miej nas zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami.

As we gathered for prayer this past Monday morning, we discussed that we have begun the new Church year. Asking what season of the Church year we are beginning, one of our first graders called out Advent. As we lit the first candle of our Advent Wreath – it reminded me how special our Monday morning prayer assembly is – we pray as a school each morning but on Mondays we gather in the school hall for prayer and a short assembly. This is important to me as principal as gathering together and praying is a strong part of our Catholic Identity. On Wednesday we had a special visitor to our school. He stopped by since not all of our children had left their shoes out Tuesday evening. Yes it was ST. NICHOLAS! With the help of some of our eighth grade elves, St. Nick passed out candy canes to all of our children.

Dining Out Night - Join us at Potbelly on Wednesday, December 11th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Potbelly has changed their policy, they now require a flyer which we will have available next week – or they can be picked up at the school or rectory office. To help put You in the holiday mood We Invite You – Two events you will not want to miss is our Drama Club’s presentation of Bethlehem or Bust – the untold story of the three Kings. It will be held on Saturday, December 16th at 7:00 p.m. in Centennial Hall. Finally, our CHRISTMAS PROGRAM will be held on Wednesday, December 20th or December 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the Church. St. Joseph Baptism Classes are carried out: In English on the First Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in the Activity Center (Club House). Parents must come to the rectory, 7240 W. 57th St., to register for the class. If the baptism is celebrated in St. Joseph, the cost of the class is including in the fee; if the child is not baptized in St. Joseph, there is a $25 fee. The parents must register and pay the fee, to be able to attend the classes. If the parents prefer to attend the class in Spanish, it is recommended for them to attend classes at Our Lady of Snows, 4810 S. Leamington Ave., Chicago. (773) 582-2266. ES NECESARIA PARA PADRES Y PADRINOS, SI ESTA

NO HA SIDO TOMADA ANTES. PARA TODOS LOS BAUTISMOS, FAVOR DE

REGISTRARSE PRIMERO EN LA RECTORIA.

Las clases de preparación para bautismos en San José se llevan a cabo: En inglés en el primer (1er) martes del mes a las 19:00 en el centro de actividades (Casa Club). Los padres deben pasar a la rectoría antes, para hacer los arreglos necesarios. Si el bautizo se celebra en St. Joseph, el costo de la clase está incluido en la tarifa; si no se bautiza en St. Joseph, hay una cuota de $25. Los padres deben inscribirse y pagar la cuota, para poder asistir a las clases. Si los padres prefieren asistir a la clase en español, se les recomienda tormarla en Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, 4810 S. Leamington Ave., Chicago. (773) 582-2266. Los padres deben llamar para informarse el día y la hora en que se llevan a cabo. Tienen personal que les puede atender en español ahí mismo.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE NOVENA AND MASS SCHEDULE

The Novena for Our Lady of Guadalupe continues through Monday, Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Spanish. All are invited. There will be two masses for the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, December 12, one at 5:00 am and the second at 7:00 p.m. Mariachi music will begin at 6:30 p.m. before the evening Mass.
