Education News

Hello, Everyone – The first vestiges of spring happened while I wasn’t looking and now we are neigh on full summer. I have noticed a definite increase in interest to complete APICS certifications

while some folks find themselves with a bit more time to attend online classes, read, and prepare for the exams!

Coach’s Corner HAPPY NEW YEAR APICS COLORADO!

Welcome to our new APICS year 2020-2021, which runs July 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021. Hard to believe that another APICS year has passed. We closed our year with mixed emotions about the

APICS world and the world we live in. As you have probably witnessed, the events in our world have brought out the best and the worst in people in many situations. For now, our Chapter is going to

continue to have virtual BOD meetings, virtual classes, and virtual PDM/Social networking meetings.

We are discussing this on a month to month basis and will continue to do so until we feel it is safe to go back to a modified in-person process.

We will hold a virtual Strategic Planning session for the Chapter in July or August. This is your chance to help us decide what is

important to work on for the coming year. You are welcome to join us, please let me know if you would like to join the event.

We have some exciting news to share with you. The Colorado APICS Chapter and the Pikes Peak APICS Chapter have

agreed to merge into one Chapter! The remaining Chapter will be the Colorado Chapter and will serve Supply Chain Professionals in Longmont, Boulder, Denver metro area, Colorado Springs, and Pueblo and outlying areas of Colorado. The merger is effective

July 1, 2020. 42 members of the Pikes Peak Chapter joined our Chapter bringing us to about 350 members. We have appointed Don Simpson, previous president of the Pikes Peak Chapter, to our BODs as the Southern Colorado Geography Director. Don may

appoint some others to assist him in some of his responsibilities on our BOD. Next year, the Geography Director will become an elected BOD position. Why did we consider this merger? With technology advances of today, we felt that we could manage two

organizations as one and gain some economies of scale. We now have one set of Financials and one chapter’s bank accounts to

manage, one income tax return to file, one website to manage, one membership list to manage, one insurance policy, one newsletter and one set of reporting requirements to APICS Headquarters. Further, we feel that we are stronger as one chapter

and that it will give us all opportunities to network with new companies and supply chain professionals we may otherwise never meet. I am excited about where this can take us. Our New BODs are excited to have this opportunity and we hope that you, our

members, are pleased with this decision as well. Please contact myself or Don Simpson if you have any questions. We look

forward to seeing how we put some new programs into play in the coming months to include our new and old friends from Southern Colorado!

Please stay safe and keep your family safe this Summer while enjoying our great Colorado outdoors!

Please let me know if the Colorado APICS Chapter can help you in any way. Thank you for being part of the Colorado APICS

Chapter this year.

Education News

Hello, Everyone – Oh, my goodness! We are already to July and ½ way through 2020. I am hoping that the 2nd half of the year gets less crazy as we determine what our new ‘everyday’

situation will be.

More folks have expressed interest in completing APICS certifications as they lay out their schedules for the rest of the year and make time to attend online classes, read, and prepare

for the exams. If this describes you or a colleague you know, let’s get you enrolled in a fall

class.

Our summer CLTD course has been rescheduled. The new revision of CLTD has been released and the Colorado Chapter is gearing up for class to begin on August 1st through September 19th.

It is well worth your time and a few Saturdays to step up your understanding of global logistics, best business practices for

transportation and important decisions for distribution.

See the CLTD online course information in this newsletter and register today using the link on the newsletter page or

visiting the Colorado APICS Chapter website under Education at: https://apicscolorado.org/On-Line_Classes .

We look forward to holding the CPIM Review class once we get enough folks registered. Check out what’s in store on the CPIM Review page of the newsletter and register today.

If you have an APICS exam already scheduled and need to change your exam date, all reschedule fees have been temporarily waived for both phone and online rescheduling with Pearson Vue.

For those folks who are looking to schedule your exams in the near future, APICS/Pearson Vue has not yet announced

timing for test centers to re-open for in-person testing. In the meantime, stay at home on-line proctored exams are

available. Contact me for details on this exam option.

For your convenience, here is the website for the Pearson Vue FAQ which provides information on test center operations. https://home.pearsonvue.com/Test-takers/Resources.aspx?ot=collapse156

We will start a full slate of APICS Certification classes in September. Look for the Fall 2020 Education schedule with course

dates and details in this newsletter and watch for the Education Bulletin that will be published soon.

Please contact me if you are interested in discussing private APICS Certification programs for folks within your company.

As always, please let me know if you have questions regarding APICS Education in Colorado.

Let us help you continue your lifelong learning journey.

"Participating in the CPIM course program run by the Colorado APICS Chapter was easily one of the best decisions I have made so far in my career. Not only did I absorb the information taught by Roger and Honey and Amber far more effectively than I would have trying to study on my own, the experience of sharing a classroom with vibrant personalities from all walks of life and from many different companies and places along the supply chain took the experience to a whole new level! I work in the heavy duty truck parts industry at the service and retail end of the supply chain and yet the knowledge gained in manufacturing and production and procurement and planning and managing from both the teachers and the other students was rewarding in itself but has also already enhanced my role at work. My company recognized the work that I put in to furthering my education and have rewarded me because of it. I highly recommend the in-class program

through the Colorado Chapter!" Mark Bibich, CPIM, Inventory Control/Purchasing, Transwest

“As a professional in supply chain management for over a decade and who has a full-time extracurricular schedule. It was hard decision to give up a piece of my weekends to attend a CPIM Certification course. However, within the first few minutes of my first day of class, I knew I had made the right choice. I was immediately aware of passion and heart at which Roger and Honey teach the APICS course, and how expertly they convey its complexity and importance in business. Not only are they phenomenal teachers; they practice and live the values of APICS daily in their own professional lives. That wealth of knowledge is transferred and made directly inherent in the CPIM professionals they see through to certification. I’m happy to know this course was well worth the time and cost. I know that it will not only serve me well professionally in the years to come, but also personally.“ Daniel Cillo, CPIM, Planning Manager/Senior Buyer, GPT Industries

“I was fortunate to get enrolled in the first ever CLTD class provided by APICS. The class was well put together and

closely related to what I do on a daily basis. APICS provides five books and an online portal specifically for the CLTD class

with all the necessary material and practice tests. There were many participants in the class from different industries and various areas within their companies so it was a great platform to learn from other’s experiences. I walked away with a better

understanding of Logistics and how it impacts all areas of the supply chain, as well as the increasing importance for companies to have a well-planned and efficient supply chain. I will be able to take the knowledge I gained from this training and apply

directly to my job.” Ben Osenbaugh, CPIM, CLTD, Director of Supply Chain, Organic Family Farms

What are Students saying about APICS Education in Colorado?

“While I attended APICS classes, I was quick to realize the valuable resources being introduced. As a professional in the supply chain world, I was able to immediately apply a number of the topics presented by APICS to our day-to-day activities. APICS has set me apart from my peers, as I am now able to present ideas and tactics that are not readily understood by everyone. I am grateful for the knowledge I have received and am excited of the possibilities going forward” Dan Clement, CPIM, Distribution Center Manger, Brewers Supply

“Attending the 5 day CSCP course conducted by Colorado APICS is highly recommended for anyone preparing to take the APICS CSCP exam. Their knowledge and work related experience in the Global Supply Chain industry was a great help in teaching the concepts in a fun and enjoyable learning setting. There is so much information to study, without this class it would be an overwhelming task to complete on an independent level.” Stephen Robles C.P.M, CPIM, CSCP, Director of Materials & Warehouse Operations, Hunter Douglas

“I have been working in manufacturing since the early 1980s. Since the mid-1990s I have intended to get my CPIM designation but have never found the time or proper study methods that would give me the confidence to take the test. That and my jobs never really “required” that I be certified. I attended the CPIM class provided by APICS Chapter 81 and found the classes, study materials, and instructors to be first rate. In July I received my CPIM certificate and I only regret not doing it years earlier. Even though my jobs never “required” this certification I cannot think of any of these jobs I would not have been better at, advanced quicker and just been a more valuable employee had I acquired this knowledge sooner. In addition, the people that I met in class and the experiences they shared only served to make this that much more of an enriching experience.” Ken Fiore, CPIM, CLTD, Purchasing Manager, Nova Engineering

”I wanted the take the APICS CSCP certification to improve my understanding of the supply chain and increase my employment prospects. I discovered that I did several things well in my previous job but I learned so many new practices and ideas that I will be able to take with me to a new job. I completed my CSCP certification in 3 months and I thought that the classroom format worked very well with the five Saturday classes spread out over a few months, which allowed plenty of time for reading and study. Use of the online tools and resources, reading schedules, and chapter tests were also instrumental in my ability to successfully pass the exam and receive my CSCP certification. During the classes, the interaction with very knowledgeable instructors and fellow students from different industries was extremely interesting and edifying. They were more than willing to share their personal experiences and answer questions regarding the content of the class and how to put it in to practice in the real world. The Colorado Chapter 81’s high exam passing rate is a testament to the skill and passion of their instructors and the APICS Body of Knowledge course material. I am also taking the CPIM course and I would highly recommend it. These courses are valuable tools to greater success and advancing further in your career.” John S. Wood, CSCP, Purchasing & Warehouse Manager, PGI Services

“The APICS CPIM classed taught by the APICS Colorado Chapter 81 was outstanding. The knowledge the

instructors bring to each class made understanding the material very easy. Every detail has been thought through from how

the classroom is set up to help people become engaged and to stay engaged during the class, to bringing in specific instructors who specialize in specific topics, makes this a fantastic learning environment. I believe I will have the competitive advantage

when taking what I have learned from the classes and applying it to my career.” Mike Hansen, CPIM, Air Methods

The Membership Spotlight

This month’s Membership Spotlight is on Peggy Fay. Peggy has been an APICS member for over 22 years and is a highly

valued member of our chapter. Read below to discover more about Peggy!

How did you first get involved with APICS?

I have been involved with APICs since June, 1998 - 22 years. Some years I have been more active than others.

What have you found most enjoyable about being an APICS member?

I enjoy being involved with APICs for the time I get to socially network with colleagues. APICs has provided me the opportunity to learn new things about a variety of topics, to help Evan and the board with membership calls, and to continue

to evolve professionally.

How do you fill your free time (hobbies, family, etc.)?

I have 2 grown daughters, 1 son-in-law, and 5 grand dogs. I like to spend time taking walks, being in the mountains, hanging

out on a beach, playing board games, putting together puzzles and trying new recipes.

What’s next for you now?

I'm not sure what's next in my life - I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm just enjoying where I am at!

A shout out to Chris Tomlin our Web Master

Thanks for helping to keep us

outdoors during this time of year, we tend to put some things on the backburner. However, one of those things should not be your APICS membership. Next time you’re about to head out on a hike or a stroll in the farmer’s market, take a minute to check

up on your membership status. Here are a few quick tips after logging into your profile at www.apics.org and clicking on ‘My Account’ at the top of the screen:

Tip Instructions

1 “Check Your

Membership Renewal Date”

Take a look at the right side of the page, under the ‘Membership’ heading. Check to see when your membership expires by looking to the right of the ‘Expires’ line. If your membership is due to expire within the next 60 days, it is time to renew. To renew online: go to the top of the page and click on ‘I Want To’, then scroll down to ‘Renew My Membership’. Fill out the required information and follow the prompts. To renew through the chapter: Contact anyone on the APICS Colorado Chapter 81 Board of Directors, and we’ll be more than happy to help you renew. NOTE: The date that your membership expires is the day that your membership becomes inactive, which may affect classes or exams you’re planning to take and any commitments with your employer.

2 “Update Your Profile – Personal Information”

On the ‘My Account’ page, go to the left side of the screen under ‘Welcome, (your name)’. You’ll see a link in blue titled ‘Edit my profile’; click on it. Most of the information on this page is optional, however I recommend you complete as much information as possible, as this helps to better identify you as a professional and helps APICS Colorado Chapter 81 communicate effectively with you. NOTE: Pay special attention to your email address that you’ve provided. Is it up to date? Make sure to update it to your preferred email address. Our chapter uses your email to communicate with you.

3

“Update Your Profile – User Preferences”

After updating your personal information in your profile, click on the ‘User Preferences’ tab just to the right of the ‘Personal Information’ tab in the profile editing page. Here you can update your preferences, to either receive more or less communication from APICS. We all know email overload is a part of everyday professional life, and here you can do something about it!

4 “Certification

Maintenance Checkup”

Click on ‘My Account’ at the top of the page, this takes you back to your main user page. Scroll down to ‘My APICS Certification’. Here you can check on when your certification will expire. Remember, throughout your active certification status period, you should be earning maintenance points through a variety of available methods. Click on the ‘Certification Maintenance Application’ link. On the left side of the page, there are links that will assist you in determining how to best maintain your certification, as well as steps on how to renew your certification. NOTE: 75 points are required to renew your certification at the end of 5 years from date of becoming certified, while 100 points are

required for the APICS Fellows designations.

Both ASCM and APICS Colorado Chapter 81 realizes that we all can fall on hard times. If you are an unemployed APICS/ASCM member whose membership is coming up for renewal and you are actively seeking work within the supply chain management

field, you may apply for an extension of membership benefits through the unemployed membership extension program. Members seeking employment within the supply chain management industry may extend their membership for free for an

additional 18 months (3 periods of 6 months). If you qualify:

Step 1: Contact anyone on the board of directors or go to www.apics.org/apics-for-individuals/membership/extensions

to download and complete the ASCM benefits extension for unemployed members form. Step 2: Submit the form to anyone on the board, who will then process with ASCM and confirm your extension.

Lastly, I’m always open to answering any questions you may have regarding you or your company’s membership. Simply reach out to me at [email protected] or 330-705-1778.

Best Regards,
