team continually achieves focus on results, alignment and
synchronization among all functions of the organization. S&OP planning includes an updated forecast that leads to a demand plan,
production and supply plan, inventory (DOI) plan, delivery plan, new product development plan, strategic initiative plan and
resulting financial plan. Plan frequency and planning horizon depend on the specifics of the industry. Done well, the S&OP
process also enables an effective integrated planning
management. Prior to coming to MillerCoors Robert Machado served as the Chief Technical Officer and SVP of Transportation,
Planning and Commercialization at The Coca-Cola Company, based in Atlanta, Georgia.
In his current role, Robert leads the Customer Supply Chain Team, consisting of the following functional areas – Demand Planning,

Transportation and Logistics. He is based in Golden, CO.
Earlier in his career, Robert held various positions of increasing
leadership responsibility with Kraft Foods, The Pillsbury Company, H.J. Heinz and Molson Coors. He holds a Bachelor of Science in

What are Students saying about APICS Education in Colorado?
“While I attended APICS classes, I was quick to realize the valuable resources being introduced. As a professional in the supply chain world, I was able to immediately apply a number of the topics presented by APICS to our day-to-day activities. APICS has set me apart from my peers, as I am now able to present ideas and tactics that are not readily understood by everyone. I am grateful for the knowledge I have received and am excited of the possibilities going forward” Dan Clement, Distribution Center Manger, Brewers Supply ”I just wanted to pass on my very appreciative thanks to Roger and Honey and the entire instructor team for all the
Saturday classes you got me through and the extra help when I needed it. I have been a supply chain professional now
for more than 20 years, but still realized I needed to take the CPIM review courses and exams to validate my experience
and knowledge. I would definitely recommend this CPIM program and coursework to any professional Supply Chain
Executive an intelligent solution and excellent way to re-energize your "career drag.” I believe the courses were an
effective part process of exam preparation because the in class review program is an excellent way to prepare and allows
time between classes to catch up on more detailed reading. The instructors are highly qualified and come prepared to
share their real life experiences and can answer any questions direct from the course content. I plan to enroll in the CSCP
course in the very near future.” Dave Korty, MBA, Vice President of Supply Chain and Logistics, North America
”I wanted the take the APICS CSCP certification to improve my understanding of the supply chain and increase my employment prospects. I discovered that I did several things well in my previous job, but I also learned so many new practices and ideas that I will be able to take with me to a new job. I completed my CSCP certification in 3 months and I thought that the classroom format worked very well with the five Saturday classes spread out over a few months, which allowed plenty of time for reading and study. Use of the online tools and resources, reading schedules, and chapter tests were also instrumental in my ability to successfully pass the exam and receive my CSCP certification. During the classes, the interaction with very knowledgeable instructors and fellow students from different industries was extremely interesting and edifying. They were more than willing to share their personal experiences and answer questions regarding the content of the class and how to put it in to practice in the real world. The Colorado Chapter’s high exam passing rate is a testament to the skill and passion of their instructors and their knowledge of the APICS Body of Knowledge. I am also taking the CPIM course and I would highly recommend it. These courses are valuable tools for greater success and advancing further in your career.“ John S. Wood, CSCP, Supply Chain Professional
“I enjoyed taking the CPIM classes through the local APICS Colorado Chapter 81. They offered me the
knowledge to pass the CPIM exam, and the tools to think strategically in my career. The instructors, as well as the students, had
knowledge in a breadth of industries allowing for real world examples to link textbook material to reality. There is no doubt the
APICS classes will enable me to advance my career in the supply chain industry.” Wynne Adams, CPIM, S&OP Demand Planner,

Got questions about S&OP?
The April PDM introduces us to Sales and Operations Planning. Register now to learn more about S&OP.
What is S&OP? Defining the S&OP process How do you define S&OP at your organization? The APICS Dictionary, 13th edition, defines S&OP: A process to develop tactical plans that provide management the ability to strategically direct its businesses to achieve competitive advantage on a continuous basis by integrating customer-focused marketing plans for new and existing products with the management of the supply chain. The process brings together all the plans for the business (sales, marketing, and development, manufacturing, sourcing, and financial) into one integrated set of plans. It is performed at least once a month and is reviewed by management at an aggregate (product family) level. The process must reconcile all supply, demand, and new-product plans at both the detail and aggregate levels and tie to the business plan. It is the definitive statement of the company’s plans for the near to intermediate term, covering a horizon sufficient to plan for resources and to support the annual business planning process. Executed properly, the sales and operation planning process links the strategic plans for the business with its execution and reviews performance measurements for continuous improvement
Why S&OP? What makes S&OP processes effective? According to the APICS Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK) Framework, third edition, “The S&OP process develops tactical plans that assist management in strategically directing the business to achieve continuous competitive advantage. It integrates customer-focused marketing plans for new and existing products with the management of the supply chain. The process integrates all business plans into a single set that meets all needs of the functions of the business.” To facilitate high-performing S&OP, develop a plan that “identifies key resources to achieve the firm’s strategic objectives and goals, and is the basis of all subsequent material and labor resource decisions and for the master production schedule).” S&OP PERFORMANCE CHECKLIST To advance S&OP from mere coping to improving performance, consider the following questions:
Can you involve more people for better support or data?
Can you better align departmental and S&OP planning horizons? Do S&OP participants know the reason behind each participant’s perspective? Are S&OP data and tools continually improving? Does the S&OP process get to the root cause of challenges? Does the S&OP process have the right challenges for its team and resources?
