The Apollo missions explained (Presentation)

Mike Dinn, former Deputy Station Director at Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station, will discuss the build-up to the Apollo missions and the major events of Apollo 11.

The Dish (Film)

The staff from Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station will introduce this popular Australian film and explain the true facts behind this fictionalised account of the Apollo 11 television broadcast.

Discover the inspiration, innovation and technology that enabled the world to view live images from the moon on television.

Why did it happen in the ACT? (Presentation)

2–3 pm, 15 years +

Why was the ACT home to NASA tracking stations? What happened when Neil Armstrong took his one small step? John Saxon, former Operations Supervisor at Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station, will answer these questions and more in this presentation.

Moon Landing (Science Show)

11–11.30 am, 1–1.30 pm, All ages

Questacon’s Excited Particles present a family–friendly history of the space race leading up to the first moon landing in 1969 and look at the future of space travel.

Guide to the Galaxy (Science Show)

12–12.30 pm, 2–2.30 pm, All ages

Questacon’s Excited Particles will introduce you to the features of our solar system and some interesting facts about different planets in this family–friendly science show.

Apollo 11 Display

9 am–5 pm, All ages

A wide range of memorabilia from NASA and private collections is on display, including a live seismogram reproduction of the seismic traces recorded as the astronauts walked on the moon.

SUNDAY 21 JULY

A Snapshot of life at Honeysuckle Creek (Presentation)

10–11 am, 15 years +

Bryan Sullivan and Hamish Lindsay will tell outrageous stories and home truths about life at Honeysuckle Creek. Learn about life in Canberra during the 1960s with snow, demanding public, managing families and preparing for two blokes to take a stroll on the moon.

The Vital Link (Film)

11–11.30 pm, 12 years +

This short 1965 NASA–produced documentary is a step back in time looking at the technology and network used to track the Apollo missions. The footage of Canberra in 1965 is a must see, if only for the fashion!

Canberra’s link to current and future space missions (Presentation)

2–3 pm, 12 years +

Glen Nagle from the CSIRO/NASA–managed Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex will take you on a journey into the cosmos with a look at the latest discoveries. See the latest images from Mars; learn about future deep space missions and the next ‘small step’ for human space exploration.

Missing Tapes and Fuzzy Pictures (Presentation)

12–2 pm, 12 years +

This presentation will look at the Apollo 11 televised moonwalk with restored footage, synchronised to coincide with the time of the landing in 1969. Discover the story of the lost Apollo 11 video tapes and how they were found decades later.

One Small Step – The Australian Story (Film)

3–4 pm, 12 years +

Presented by Australian author Peter FitzSimons, the film explores the front-line role Australian radio astronomers and technicians played in the Apollo 11 moon landing, and the uniquely Australian approach they brought to the task.
