In the first six weeks of the program 56 people have called to report littering, withpolice writing two citations for people throwing trash out of their cars.
A citation can only be written if police witness the littering.
If littering is reported police send a warning letter to the offender.

It's why she's happy to see the strong community response.

Keeping our valley clean, green and beautiful… that’s the goal of the new campaign initiated by Cave SpringSupervisor Charlotte Moore to combat littering in Roanoke County. Cigarette butts at local intersections anddiscarded trash seen along many roads in the county continue to be a problem, but now there may be a solution.
Beginning this month, many drivers will see temporary road signs at major County intersections reminding themthat “The World is Not Your Ashtray.” According to Roanoke County Assistant County Administrator RichardCaywood, the new program will feature a local partnership with Lamar Advertising. “The advertising firm hasgenerously donated billboard space to us,” he said. The partnership will also include signs on County vehicles, including the County’s fleet of trash collection trucks.
From a press release sent to us from Roanoke County,“Supervisor Moore’s campaign against discardedcigarette butts is a great starting point for this program,”Assistant County Administrator Richard Caywood said.“It’s a visible problem that thousands of County motoristssee every day. Our hope is that by raising awareness ofthis first issue, we can open everyone’s eyes to thelarger problem of litter in the County. We plan onbringing additional ideas to the Board of Supervisors inthe future.”
To support the launch of the new anti-littering campaign,Cave Spring Supervisor Moore and Virginia SenatorRalph Smith spoke to local media at the RoanokeCounty Administration Center on Friday, January 4.Moore and Smith spoke about the new efforts, andhighlighted the importance of working together to keepour community beautiful.

One Roanoke County supervisor is hoping to extend ananti-littering campaign across the Commonwealth.
Charlotte Moore said the county is asking lawmakers in Richmond to change thestatewide ordinance, allowing local government's to keep the money collected inlittering fines.
ROANOKE COUNTY SEES SUCCESS WITH NEW CAMPAIGN
That money would then be reinvested into future campaigns.
"It really seems to be the fair thing to do that we get to keep the (money) so thatwe can put that back into the funding for another anti-littering campaign and keep it locally," she said.
At this point there's no word if the General Assembly will take action on the proposal.
Moore said they will continue to fight for the change, even if it's not approved.
