Password or Onscreen Code, which works best for your room? (visit for more info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5517)

The Apple TV has proven to be an excellent resource in the classroom: allowing teachers to be able to teach around the room, students to share work and collaborate in a new, interesting way, for iPads to be used as a doc cam, wireless projecting from a computer/ipad. But, it also comes with its challenges. If your students have iPads/iPhones – how does a teacher maintain control of the screen? If you have other Apple TVs around the school, how does one prevent a teacher accidently commandeering a screen in a different room? Fortunately, the Apple TV has two built in features, password or onscreen code. 1. Password Why you use it: The Apple TV is being used mainly for projecting by one device and the screen will not often be share with other devices. How you use it: When one mirrors/connects from a device, the Apple TV will ask for the password before allowing permission to mirror. How you set it up: On the Apple TV – Settings > Airplay > Security > Set Password > key in a password using the remote. 2. Onscreen code Why you use it: A few reasons:

1. If you have multiple Apple TVs in school – this will ensure that only those in range can mirror to the classroom Apple TV. Since the code cannot be seen outside the classroom, it prevents an unwanted screen takeover! 2 . Students needing access will be blocked until they key in the code – giving one the ability to manage who is using the screen.

How you use it: When one mirrors/connects from a device, a passcode prompt will pop-up on the device, while a random four digit code will be generated and shown on screen. Input the passcode onto the device to mirror your screen. How you set it up: On the Apple TV –Settings > Airplay > Security > Onscreen code > set to ‘ON’.

Free Remote App

If you don't prefer using the little silver remote that comes with the Apple TV, Apple offers the Remote app for iPhone and iPad in the App Store; and it’s free. This gives better range, as well as, a full keyboard for text input.
