• Documented since Egyptian and Babylonian times
• By the 13th century, well-established in western Europe in craft guilds
• Government takeover of control of apprenticeship (Statue of Artificers of England, 1563)
• Extension of apprenticeships to other areas of expertise (health care, administration)

Apprenticeship systems vary greatly from country to country.

• About 50% of school graduates enter apprenticeships
• Leads to recognized certificate of trade

• In 1979, I, a mediocre student with little aptitude for studying, graduated from school and I entered a 4-year apprenticeship
• In 1983, I graduated with a national certificate as cabinetmaker
• My apprenticeship taught me: • Discipline • Deference • Resilience • Social skills
