However, he does not illustrate this early state]

While the ACSC characterises this item as an "essay", it is more correctly an unissued stamp. 27,000,000 booklet stamps had been printed when the decision was made to raise the basic postage rate to 4d. The Post Office destroyed all but a few sheets. At the two Archival Sales conducted in 1986 & 1987, a total of 40 stamps were sold, comprising 4 singles - one sold for $12,075 at our auction of 22/4/2006 - 4 booklet panes of 6, and a plate number block of 12 - sold for $109,250 at our auction of 25/5/2008.

COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Flight Covers - Commercial

Lot 300

C 1920 (Jul-Aug) commercial cover to Melbourne endorsed "By the De Haviland No 9" with Straits Settlements KGV 4c carmine cancelled with Brisbane Krag machine cancel of 19AUG20, some light toning/staining but most presentable. A rare and important cover being the only recorded item carried into Australia by Ray Parer and John McIntosh: see AAMC #34. With Merv Cobcroft's article published in "Philately from Australia" regarding the recent discovery and history of what he calls the first "ordinary" airmail letter to Australia.

Parer & McIntosh had intended to enter the England-Australia Air Race. However, by the time their Airco (later de Haviland) DH9 was ready for the flight, Ross & Keith Smith had already arrived in Australia! Despite this setback, their wealthy backer encouraged them to undertake the flight anyway. The entire journey took 208 days - almost 7 months - being marred by inclement weather, landing accidents and other incidents. The AAMC lists postcards carried from Chahbar (Persia) to Manora (Karachi) - of which two examples are known, Cat $4000 - as the only mail carried on this epic adventure. That makes this cover carried from Singapore (or, possibly, Penang) all the more significant.

QUEENSLAND - Postal Stationery

Lot 404

E POSTAL CARDS: 1880 essay for a 1d+1d reply postal card with two impressions of the First Sideface 1d - remarkably, the second being Die II! - both on the face, the divided address panel endorsed 'NAME & ADDRESS OF PERSON TO WHOME SENT' [sic; the offending 'E' being crossed-through] at left & 'NAME & ADDRESS OF SENDER' at right and also 'Before reposting please obliterate this address' at lower-left & 'Over' at lower-right, the reverse with pencilled "Communication only" at left & "Reply only" at right, manuscript "Essay 1880" in the upper margin, vertical fold apparently to simulate a printed rule on the reverse. By any measure, an extraordinary item. Ex Ron Butler.

Almost certainly modeled on a private essay for a British reply postal card on which both stamp impressions were also on the face. Neither of these innovative, but confusing, ideas was adopted. This item preceded a very similar essay but with the Bell ½d essay x2, with the heading corrected & the reverse also divided and headed 'MESSAGE TO BE SENT' at left & 'REPLY' at right and also 'When no reply is required both Spaces may be occupied' at lower-left & 'The Card must not be cut' at lower-right. That item sold for $16,100 at our sale of Bernie Manning's Sidefaces & Chalons on 13/6/2009. In our opinion, principally because this is the earlier and bears both dies of the issued 1d stamp, this is the more important item.
