Dear parishioners,

Pope Francis just released a new Apostolic Exhortation called, “Gaudete et Exsultate” (Rejoice and be Glad); on the call to holiness in today’s world.

Here is a quote from it on how an ordinary mom would encounter opportunities for holiness in a typical day, “…a woman goes shopping, she meets a neighbor and they begin to speak, and the gossip starts. But she says in her heart: “No, I will not speak badly of anyone”. This is a step forward in holiness. Later, at home, one of her children wants to talk to her about his hopes and dreams, and even though she is tired, she sits down and listens with patience and love. That is another sacrifice that brings holiness. La-ter she experiences some anxiety, but recalling the love of the Virgin Mary, she takes her rosary and prays with faith. Yet another path of holiness. Later still, she goes out onto the street, encounters a poor person and stops to say a kind word to him.

Blessings,

Fr. Peter

Queridos Parroquianos,

Bendiciones,

P. Peter

Quote of the Week _________________________________________________________________

“Baptism enables Christ to live in us and us to live united to Him, to collaborate in the Church, each one according to his condition, in the transfor-mation of the world. Received only once, the bap-tismal cleansing illumines our whole life, guiding our steps to the Heavenly Jerusalem. There is a before and after Baptism. The Sacrament implies a journey of faith, which we call catechumenate, evident when it’s an adult that asks for Baptism. However, children also, since antiquity, are bap-tized in the faith of the parents (Cf. Rite of the Baptism of Children, Introduction, 2). And I would like to say something to you about this. Some think: but why baptize a child who doesn’t under-stand? Let’s wait until he grows up, that he under-stands, and that he himself asks for Baptism. However, this means not to have trust in the Holy Spirit, because when we baptize a child, the Holy Spirit enters that child, and the Holy Spirit makes that child grow, from a child, in Christian virtues that will then flower. This opportunity must always

be given to everyone, to all children, to have within them the Holy Spirit who guides them during their life. Don’t forget to baptize the children! No one merits Baptism, which is always a free gift for all, adults and newborns. However, as happens with a seed full of life, this gift takes root and bears fruit in a terrain fed by faith. -Pope Francis, 4/11/2018

Q: What does it mean when we say the Church is one?

A: This week we continue our journey through the four marks of the Church. The first is that the Church is “one”. There is one Church of Christ because Christ Himself is one. “The Church is one because of her source”: the Holy Trinity; “one because of her founder”, as Jesus came to reconcile and restore to unity all peo-ple, and “one because...it is the Holy Spirit...who brings about that wonderful communion of the faithful and joins them together so intimately in Christ that he is the principle of the Church’s uni-ty.” (CCC 813). Thus it is important that the Church be a unity, but it is a unity in diversity of peoples, languages, cultures, gifts, offices, ways of life, etc. “The great richness of such diversity is not op-posed to the Church’s unity.” (CCC 814). But there are certain aspects that unify us in one Church: 1) profession of one faith re-ceived from the Apostles; 2) common worship (the sacraments); 3) apostolic succession. It is having all three of these that makes us one. If we were incapable of worshiping fully together, how could we be unified? That is why unity has to be based in truth. As Catholics we believe that the one Church of Christ sub-sists fully in the Catholic Church– that is, that only the Catholic Church has everything which God willed for His Church, while others are missing certain aspects of what Christ and the apostles gave to us.
