objective: Design a house influenced by the quartz crystaloverview: Basic structure of the house is derived by the quartz crystal’s distinct double helix makeup. Substantial exterior glazing and an open floor plan resemble the transparent nature of the crystal. Floor layout coincides with the 3-step turn of the quartz’s helix. the double helix elements on the exterior extend past the roof to allude to a continuance of the helical chain.

objective: Design a structure to be used for private and group study as well as a space to hold the school’s collection of designer chairsoverview: layout of building creates a distinction between private and group space; private spaces can be found underground while public spaces are found on the surface. tilted walls also encourage or discourage the presence of inhabitants in certain spaces and influence person traffic. overall shape of building represents that of a chair sitting on the landscape.

objective: Design a 12,000 sqft. gallery at an existing parking lot for a given list of sculpturesoverview: the shape of the designed gallery is influenced by its connection between virginia tech’s organic campus and Blacksburg’s orthogonal downtown area. the interior of the gallery is an open space with a number of elevated platforms of slightly different elevations. as a visitor walks through the gallery spaces they will often get a glimpse of a future destination before they are immedi-ately able to access that space, creating a feeling of anticipation for what’s ahead.

objective: Design a library with a large reading space and room for 30,000 books, as well as space for a small art galleryoverview: the library is composed of 4 structural rows that dip and rise through the length of the building. these changes create pockets of space which range from open and public to small and isolated. Half of the building is dedicated to the library, a high-ceiling space with lower level stacks and an upper mezzanine for reading. Wood slats on the exterior diffuse the light entering the building. the other half consists of a 2 story art gallery made more intimate by a series of wooden slats.

objective: Design a residence for 12 students and 3 professors as well as a studio for the inhabitantsoverview: the 3 story residence is set up based on a module format, where adjacent apartments share a washroom and utilities. each apartment has 1 long shaded glazing wall that overlooks the studio below. this creates an indirect connection between place of study and place of work as well as allow the light from the apartments to illuminate the alley between the residence and the studio. the studio consists of an open space with perimeter glazing for daylight as well as a sheltered patio for when students want to take a break outside.

objective: Design a primitive hut within an ever-changing, neglected landscapeoverview: the premise of this hut is to create a changing internal atmosphere based upon the mood of the inhabitant, made possible by the light aluminum cage suspended within the outer concrete shell. When the cage is completely withdrawn no exit from the hut is possible and no light is permitted through the skylights. as the cage is extended, however, more openings are created and more light is permitted within, representing the graduated change from an inhabitant wanting to escape fear to one who is ready to conquer it.

objective: Design one or more small pavilions for the adventurers and explorers of the notoriously harsh Belle isleoverview: the proposed pavilions on Belle isle serve to encourage exploration across the varied and interesting island. the language of the island’s distinct areas is represented by one of three pavilions, but the pavilions are not located in their respective areas. instead, each pavilion is designed with a strong directional emphasis that points in the necessary direction to get to that area. in this sense a visitor can get a hint of what to expect in the next area just so long as they make the adventure first.

aMtRaK Station Spring2011

objective: Design a railroad station for clifton Forge, va.overview: the clifton Forge railroad stop is on a line terminated by stations in chicago and new York city. the backbone of the project is two long walls that stretch across the site that point to these locations, foreshadowing a sense of destination. the two structures on the site, a ticket office and a utility space, feature facades composed of railroad ties. an old vacant diner currently on the site would be stripped of its exterior and repurposed to serve as a pergola, acting as a gateway between the station and the center of clifton Forge. a large green space would also be developed on this corner of the site.

objective: Design Building construction lab spaces for nRccoverview: this project was an exploration into the idea of dynamic design with a focus on phenomenal dynamics. at the entry inhabitants are greeted with a subtly edged concrete wall opposed by its metal formwork negative. Shadows on the form surface bend slightly but unpredictably. During many hours of the day a path of light illuminates the through-path of the corridor. Structural shelter elements extend from the entrance all the way back to the rear of the complex where they terminate to create a shadow condition similar to that of a sundial. lab spaces feature articulated and exposed structural elements in the spirit of this building construction college. By request of the college, our mock-client on the project, an isolated rear outdoor area allows classes to work outside.
