34 New Uses for Old BunkersSwitzerland’s mountains are peppered with carefully

concealed military bunkers. They were built to protect

the country’s sovereignty, but critics claim that they are

obsolete and cost too much money.

40 A Bold ProposalCharif Souki, the chairman and chief executive of Cheniere

Energy, built a huge terminal to import gas into the US.

Now, he plans to use it to export gas as local prices tumble

due to oversupply.

44 China’s African FocusA million Chinese, from engineers to chefs, have moved

to work in Africa in the past decade. This trade boom has

changed lives on a global scale.

48 Back from the BrinkRachel Ashwell had a turbulent time during the global

financial crisis and had to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

But now her Shabby Chic range is bouncing back.

56 Wiki’s Gender GapWikipedia has hundreds of thousands of contributors, but

less than 15 per cent of them are women. The reason why

men outnumber women on the site runs far deeper than

Wikipedia.

60 Tough TaskTina Brown, the renowned former editor of The New Yorker,

Vanity Fair and Talk, has been given the task of turning

Newsweek into a profitable magazine. That is a lot to ask

74 Message In a Bottle

Every year, billions of empty water bottles end up in

landfills around the world. The little Australian town of

Bundanoon has totally banned the selling of bottled

water, and the idea is catching on.

78 The Sound of Free Scores

The Internet Music Score Library Project is the world’s

largest free source of musical scores. Like many other

similar sites, it has ignited copyright concerns and is

challenging traditional business models.

82 An Unhealthy Legacy?

The promise by the 2012 organisers to get two million

more English people involved in sport has faltered. But

that’s not the first time the Olympic legacy has not lived

up to its billing.

Sony’s New ChallengerSony’s chairman Howard Stringer’s decision to make Kazuo Hirai his top lieutenant signals the company will accelerate plans to marry its content with hardware after its products lost ground to Apple and Samsung Electronics.

In naming the 50-year-old executive to oversee all of Sony’s consumer electronics, Stringer picked the only one of the ‘Four Musketeers’ he’s been grooming who isn’t an engineer by trade. Hirai, who’s fluent in Japanese and English, was also the youngest musketeer.

The promotion will test the games chief’s ability to carry out Stringer’s vision to integrate Sony’s TVs and computers with content from the entertainment businesses. After the Walkman’s domination of portable players in the 1980s, Tokyo-based

Sony lost against Apple with the iPod, failed to fend off Samsung in TVs, while Nintendo took the lead in video-game consoles.

Hirai will head a newly created group that combines all of Sony’s consumer electronics and network services from April 1. He will also be responsible for sales and marketing, common software platforms and design operations, according to Sony.

The company cited Hirai’s ability to turn around the PlayStation games division for promoting him to the expanded role. Sony reported third-quarter earnings that exceeded analysts’ estimates after the PlayStation games division’s profit more than doubled. That cushioned a slump in TV prices, which had also eroded earnings at Samsung and Panasonic.

Having spent three years searching for a CEO, Sears Holdings

Corporation appears to have struck the desired balance with

high tech and retailing by appointing tech executive Lou

D’Ambrosio. The former CEO of telecom giant Avaya was

noted for successfully leading Avaya through a going private

transaction that effectively resulted in higher earnings for the

company. He has also completed a 16 years stint at IBM, thus

bringing with him a wealth of technological expertise.

Sears’ board sees great opportunity in tapping D’Ambrosio’s

deep understanding of the telecom industry, which can be

applied to giving the company a bigger online presence by

revamping its stores and upgrading its technology. In targeting

the rapidly growing market of tech savvy shoppers, Sears

is working on launching commerce-enabled applications

on smartphones, PCs and tablets to broadcast deals to

shoppers looking to save time, energy and money. With

this technological capability the 125-year-old Sears Holding

is attempting to set itself apart from competitors including

Penney’s, Target Corp and Macy’s.

D’Ambrosio, 46, faces the immediate challenge to halt the

financial losses of the beleaguered company whose revenues

have been declining every year since it merged with Kmart in

2005. Will the MBA from Harvard Business School prove to

be the new blood the troubled company so urgently needs to

plug its losses? Investors and market analysts will be keeping

a keen watch in the coming months.

Hoi An became an important centre of commerce in the 17th century thanks to the Tu Bon river, which was navigable by big ships. Today, the river is much smaller due to siltation.

Many of Hoi An’s citizens can trace their ancestry back to Chinese traders who flocked to the trading port three centuries ago.

The Japanese Bridge is one of Hoi An’s main attractions. It is the only Japanese-style building left in the city.
