March kicked off with two hamfests, Spring Fest put on by the Scottsdale Amateur Radio Club and ARCA held at the Mountain Valley Church parking lot. it was a very well attended hamfest and the tailgaters were in abundance. This was a very good hamfest. Scottsdale Spring Fest is one to be on everyone's schedule looking forward to it next years. The next one Radio Society of Tucson Spring Hamfest Golden Corral Buffet & Grill. This hamfest turned out to a big one with lots of tailgaters, some commercial venders and attendance that I think was the best I have seen there. It was packed from opening time till time to leave. There seem to be something for everyone. Now you know why my wife insists

I take the Ford Focus because I would of fill up my pickup truck. I had a great time. Both of these events do deserve a job well done Thank you for your great work. . I thank the ARRL DXCC card checkers for showing up at both of these events.

I would like to address an item concerning hamfest. When your committe or club puts on a hamfest and requests ARRL approval of your event you take on certain items concerning the event. When you put the flyers together for your event include the ARRL logo, If you want ARRL DXCC card checkers at the event then put it on the flyer. This sections has several ARRL DXCC card checkers that are willing to show up at your event and check QSL cards for DXCC. If you do not inform the people that you have ARRL DXCC Card Checkers at your event and they show up because you asked them to and no one brings cards because your organization failed to put it on the flyers or advertise it in your news letter you just had some ARRL DXCC Volunteers travel a distance to just stand around. These volunteers are more than willing to show up and check QSL cards and answer your questions concerning Awards at any hamfest. Just remember they are volunteers and they do it on their time and gas expense so advertise their presence prior to the event.

I have finished the 2014 calendar and I will be attending most of the ham fests in Arizona. Time or let's just say last call to clubs that wish to have your Arizona Section Manager talk to them about the ARRL current events and what is going on in Arizona put in your request by emailing me dates, that means more than one date, and I will try and work it out to arrange it. I would really like to meet some of you on your own home turf. I am putting time aside to attend as many as I can. 2014 is becoming a great year in Amateur Radio with the ARRL Centennial Celebration to the Southwest convention. Last Call or chance to do this.

For those who don't subscribe to the ARRL mailing list, they have a very nice ARRL 100 year's Centennial certificate suitable for framing. You must be an ARRL member to access the PDF file. If you print it out on photo paper it looks really good. It will already have your name and call letters on the certificate.

Section Emergency Coordinator

Although it’s only April, it looks like wildfire season is upon us. As I write this article fire crews are battling 2 small fires in the Coconino National Forest. Now is the time to make sure that if you are a deployable ARES member you have your equipment ready to go and the other important details in place. That means not only that your go bags are ready but your family is ready too. Ready to evacuate if you are in an effected area or ready to go along with their daily lives should ARES call you to support any wildfires this year. That doesn’t mean front line response to a fire but to a shelter or any other location where communications is limited or down. Have you sent your FEMA ICS Certificates to your DEC? If not do it now so you can be deployed if the request is received. Dennis Bietry – KE7EJF / Section Emergency Coordinator / [email protected] I want to congratulate Dennis KE7EFE AZ SEC who is now officially a COML. This is a great achievement and takes about 2 years to complete. Great ob Dennis

SCOUTING AND YOUTH IN AMATEUR RADIO In February I told you about Ian M Valentine KE7TYZ, joining the ranks of Eagle Scout in late December 2013. Amateur Radio led him into robotics. Ian and his team came in 2nd in the Arizona State robotics event. Great job to Ian and His team

A couple of Boy Scouts/hams have built every project from the first two books by Alfred Morgan called "Boys first and second book of radio and electronics". They would like to work on the third book. These popular books were once found in almost every library across the country. I loaned my set to someone a few years ago. I have been searching used book stores to replace my copies. I have found all but the third book. If someone has the third book, please contact me. Thanks Tom K7DF

Emergency Communication

We are always looking for people to take messages and deliver them via telephone to hams and non-hams. The net is open to all ham operators regardless of license level and there’s no membership requirement associated with this net. Traffic is not required to check into the net. Training is conducted as needed or when someone asks. This is GREAT way to get involved with Emergency Communications (EMCOM) and learn how it’s done prior to an actual emergency. The repeaters are; 146.86 and (440.700 Hub) Heliograph Peak; 147.28 Guthrie Peak - Greenlee County; 145.21 Jacks Peak, New Mexico. Between Lordsburg & Silver City; 145.41 Pinal Peak Near Globe, AZ; 147.16 Mt Lemmon Near Tucson; 146.70 Greens Peak Near Springerville – Showlow; 145.27 South Mtn. Near Alpine, AZ; 147.08 Mule Mtn.
