I was impressed by the story of Mr Lee Kuan Yew the founding leader of Singapore who died recently. I read that Lee took a country the size Bulawayo from the backwaters of underdevelopment in the 1960s to a first world economy with the 9th highest GDP per capita. In fact I understand that Singapore lacked all manner of resources such as water and minerals. Singapore took off in spite of the massive obstacles arraigned against it to become the medical capital of south East Asia as well as its financial capital. The underlying thread in this miracle was good leadership. It also showed to me that we can achieve anything under the sun either as individuals or as a nation. I wondered as I read this story whether a band of internal auditors and others with a mind to work across the breath of our economy can be some catalyst of Zimbabwe’s move from the current malaise to some respectable position. That recuperation will start in our minds, cascade into our organisations, and ultimately into our whole nation. But that presupposes a correct mind-set, a vision and loads of knowledge in governance, risk and internal controls. It also requires emotional maturity to navigate the very rough terrain in which we operate. We can be the oasis among swamps. Let us do it! I was impressed by the story of Mr Lee Kuan Yew the founding leader of Singapore

who died recently. I read that Lee took a country the size Bulawayo from the

backwaters of underdevelopment in the 1960s to a first world economy with the 9th

highest GDP per capita. In fact I understand that Singapore lacked all manner of

resources such as water and minerals. Singapore took off in spite of the massive

obstacles arraigned against it to become the medical capital of south East Asia as

well as its financial capital.

The underlying thread in this miracle was good leadership. It also showed to me

that we can achieve anything under the sun either as individuals or as a nation. I

wondered as I read this story whether a band of internal auditors and others with a

mind to work across the breath of our economy can be some catalyst of

Zimbabwe’s move from the current malaise to some respectable position. That

recuperation will start in our minds, cascade into our organisations, and ultimately

into our whole nation. But that presupposes a correct mind-set, a vision and loads

of knowledge in governance, risk and internal controls. It also requires emotional

maturity to navigate the very rough terrain in which we operate. We can be the

oasis among swamps. Let us do it!

NATIONAL CODE ON CORPORATE GOVERNANCE ZIMBABWE ( NCCGZ)

I have written a lot in my past newsletters about the National Code. I am happy to say the code

was launched formally by the Acting President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Emmerson

Mnangagwa on the 9th April 2015 at the Rainbow Hotel. All internal auditors must just not have

a copy of the code but read it thoroughly. It has a lot to say on boards of directors, risk

management, internal audit etc. In your governance reviews the code will be the basis of

measurement.

As boards, management and external auditors review your work they will now use the code. We

as internal auditors must be the experts in the National code. You can get your copy of the code

from IODZ or the Quality Corporate Governance Centre or phone us. More than ever before an

internal auditor operating in Zimbabwe will need to be familiar with the International Professional

Practices Framework if you are to be relevant.

MAY IS INTERNATIONAL INTERNAL AUDIT AWARENESS MONTH! As an internal audit professional, you play an important role in raising awareness and elevating the

profession. Whether you are an active IIA member or new to internal auditing, there’s something

you can do to raise awareness.

For example, you can customize your email signature and social media accounts with the

International Internal Audit Awareness Month digital icon (depicted at right). You can hold a

lunch-and-learn in your workplace to dispel myths about internal auditing and explain the value

that a well-resourced, independent internal audit function can provide. You can also distribute

sweet treats or tokens to co-workers with an educational flier about the profession.

Don’t let the opportunity pass to advocate the importance of internal auditing to your co-workers

and other stakeholders. For additional ideas, sample programs, tips, and templates, download the

free Building Awareness Toolkit from The IIA’s website www.theiia.org/goto/awareness

MEMBERSHIP

There are still a number of internal auditors who have not renewed their membership with the

Institute. I appeal to you to do so. This will enable you to have access to information that you need to

do your work effectively. I am talking about standards, practice guides and advisories, the bi-monthly

prize winning internal audit magazine, results of various studies carried out by the Institute, books etc.

Membership enables you to attend our continuous professional development courses at preferential

rates.

As members you get newsletters from the Institute such as Leaders Link, Tone at the Top and Global

Connections which bring you the latest audit trends throughout the world. Pay your membership

through our Barclays Bank Account number 02157-6304250 in the name of Institute of Internal

Auditors Zimbabwe.
