Message from Administration Aloha CKMS Ohana:

With a little under 7 weeks of school remaining, our year together is rap-

idly coming to an end! The older we get, the faster time seems to fly! Take a mo-

ment as we enter this last quarter of the 2018/19 school year to take a long look at

your child, do you see the growth he/she has made this year? We see our students

have matured physically, socially and academically. We are proud of their ac-

complishments and look forward to watching them continue to blossom.

This month our newsletter celebrates our CKTV/Media students who re-

cently returned from Seattle with honors from the Student Television Network

competition. Mr. Matsunaga’s students continue to earn many awards for their

outstanding work. We are also looking forward to our Spring Concerts and the

opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the growth of our students in the Music De-

partment led by Ms. Tochiki and Mr. Gonzales. The wide variety of interest-

based electives CKMS students have to explore are part of what makes the Mid-

dle School experience special. For the first time, students have a choice of which

classes to take. They also begin to exercise autonomy while exploring personal

interests and possible career choices. Our teachers and students are living exam-

ples of our May Day theme this year “He e'epa ke aloha, he kula'ilua (Love goes

two ways- to love and to be loved.) Please join us on Wednesday, May 29th from

9am –10:30am to celebrate May Day.

Third quarter progress reports have been sent home. Your child must

earn passing grades in his/her four core subjects (English, Math, Social Studies &

Science) to be promoted to the next grade. Please contact your child’s teacher(s)

to discuss any concerns you may have about your child’s academic progress.

Our eighth graders began the second round of the Smarter Balanced As-

sessment (SBA) in Science the week of April 1st. Mathematics and reading will

follow in the coming weeks. The test measures your child’s proficiency on the

Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Reading and Math and on the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards

(HCPS III) in Science. By working together we can ensure your child’s test experience is positive and successful. Here

are some ways you can help your child succeed:

· Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest

· Ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast at home or in the cafeteria at school

· Make sure your child arrives at school on time

· Gently encourage your child to do his or her best

Please join us on April 25th for our School Community Council community meeting at 5:30pm in the CKMS

Cafeteria.

We care about each and every child, and celebrate their growth as Middle School students!

Recently on March 30th, 2019, our CKMS Team Unify class organized, planned out,

and hosted a color run. The color run was created in order to bring people of our com-

munity together in a fun and unique activity. Our CKMS Team Unify class was able to

raise about six thousand dollars. The money will fund our Special Olympics athletes to

travel to the state games on Oahu Memorial Day weekend. This color run exceeded our

expectations. More people attended than expected and we were very happy to see our

Kauai community coming together to celebrate acceptance and inclusion. We had about

two hundred donors and participants. We hope to continue to spread acceptance and

inclusion throughout our community with more activities like this one. We would like

to thank everyone who participated, donated and supported our cause. We would not be

able to accomplish this without the help of our community.

Students in the Advanced Media Productions Club (CKTV Media) recently returned

from a trip to Seattle, Washington, to attend the 2019 Student Television Network

National Convention held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Students competed against

their peers in a number of video competitions in which they had 2-8 hours to com-

plete a video on a given prompt. The Movie Trailer team, consisting of 8th grader

Evan Batalucco and 7th graders Via Javinar, Colton Mills, and Clara South-Carapetyan took home the 3rd place

award. In the Crazy 8s competition where students had just 8 hours to complete a news magazine show, our

CKTV students won the 1st place award and repeated as the national champs after winning last year's 1st place

award as well. The team consisted of 8th graders Kate Nakamura, Haiey Arakaki, Shayne Shibuya, and 7th

graders Colton Mills, Stella Blanchard, Natalee Zyskowski, Jeanine Longboy, Aaliyah Nero, Via Javinar, Khris-

tine Pasion, and Clara South-Carapetyan. In addition to the competition, students participated in breakout ses-

sions led by industry professionals, they toured college campuses at Seattle University and the University of

Washington, and got a chance to go tubing in the snow! The entire class wants to thank our CKMS staff, teach-

ers, students, and families for their support throughout the year in the many fundraisers that they held to help get

them to Seattle.

WHAT IS A HEALTHY DIET?

Eating a healthy diet doesn’t have to be overly com-plicated. While some specific foods or nutrients have been shown to have a beneficial effect on mood, it’s your overall dietary pattern that is most important. The cornerstone of a healthy diet pattern should be to replace processed food with real food whenever possible. Eating food that is as close as possible to the way nature made it can make a huge difference to the way you think, look, and feel. Our CKMS Cafeteria provides healthy breakfast and lunch for our students. Our students will be able to enjoy our Local Harvest of the Month

Breakfast on April 17th. This will consist of:

Kalo/Poi Yogurt Parfait. Vanilla yogurt layered with fresh diced Kalo, topped with Pineap-

ple, fresh Poi & sprinkled with Granola The Kalo & Poi is being

provided by our Kauai owned Local company "Aloha Aina Poi

Company"
