FIFTH SUNDAY of EASTERApril 29, 2018 11:00 am Worship

Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. We believe worship is the heart of our life together.

As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence all electronic devices. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and

preparation for worship.

OPENING VOLUNTARY Robert Elmore Prelude on “The Day of Resurrection”

INTROIT Frances L. CallahanCome, Christians, Join to Sing

*CALL TO WORSHIP Nathan Curran One: O Lord, you know us

All: When we sit down, when we rise up, when our thoughts are far away.

One: You are always with usAll: In the light and in the dark.

One: You made usAll: And we are fearfully and wonderfully made.

One: Search us and teach usAll: So that we may always follow you.

One: Let us worship God. —Psalm 139

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN #150 madridCome, Christians, Join to Sing

*Those who are able, please stand.

The Children’s Sabbath was

originally sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund as

a way for faith communities to

celebrate children as sacred gifts of

God, and provides the opportunity for

houses of worship to renew and live

out their moral responsibility to care, protect and advocate

for all children. Today is Trinity’s second observance of the

Children’s Sabbath.

ANTHEM We Praise You for the Sun Franklin L. ShepardWe praise you for the sun, the golden, shining sun, that gives us healing, strength, and joy; we praise you for the sun.

We praise you for the rain, the softly falling rain, that gives us healing, strength, and joy; we praise you for the rain.

We praise you for the wind, the strong, refreshing wind, that gives us healing, strength, and joy; we praise you for the wind.

We praise you for your love, our friend and father God, who gives us healing, strength, and joy; we praise you for your love.

(Cherub Choir)

CALL TO CONFESSION Catherine Williams

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Addison EulOne: Loving God, All: We come to you to say “I am sorry” and confess our

mistakes. We know that you love and forgive us. Sometimes we make simple mistakes with our school work but forget to apologize or be responsible. Sometimes we do not listen to our parents who are trying to help us. Sometimes we fight with people or loose our tempers. Sometimes we need to be more ready to accept an apology when someone blames us for something we did not do or breaks our stuff. Forgive us for the big and little things we do that are selfish, unkind, greedy, picky, or bossy.

Silent confession

One: Merciful Father, All: We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to be more kind,

selfless and loving to everyone in your world. Amen. —Written by the 1st and 2nd grade class

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Anna Speer

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION John Lawson Willis

SCRIPTURE READING Harris Farr, Lanier Byars One: The Word of the Lord. Deuteronomy 6:1-13, 20-25 All: Thanks be to God.

ANTHEM Vicki Hancock WrightAll Things Bright and Beautiful

All things bright and beautiful, all things great and small, all things wise and wonderful: God our Maker created them all. Each little flow’r that opens, each little bird that sings, God made their glowing colors, God made their tiny wings. God gave us eyes to see them, and lips that we might tell how great is God almighty, who doeth all things well.

SERMON Rev. Dr. George Stroup, Rev. Erin McGee, Elizabeth DavisHall Wildman, Connor Willingham, Heidi von Kleydorff

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Margaret Justice, Delaney EulWe believe that God made the world and us. We believe that God uses his awesomness to keep us safe and bless us.

We believe that Jesus was God’s Son. He died but came back from the dead. Jesus came to tell us about God, love us, wash away our sins, change the world, and teach us to love.

We believe the Holy Spirit is always with and in us, no matter what.

We believe that the church is a place for us to be together with friends. It is where we can worship and serve God and learn about the stories in the Bible.

God tells us not to fights with fists but to use the power of love. God would like us to treat everyone fairly and equally.

God will always forgive our sins and will always be by our side. Amen.

This affirmation of faith was written by

our 2017-18 Third Grade children. As

part of their Sunday School lessons, they

studied the Apostle’s Creed and then

created statements to proclaim what they

believe.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE o waly walyCome, Spirit, come, our hearts control, our spirits long to be made whole. Let inward love guide every deed; by this we worship and are freed.

PRESENTATION OF BIBLES TO FIFTH GRADERS

ANTHEM Terri Sinclair and Kirsten FoylesWith One Voice

With the sound of a drum, with a mandolin strum, use your music to sing God’s praise! With the pluck of a string, with a dulcimer ring, let your glorious songs be raised! From the African plain, through the Amazon rain, let God’s melody now be heard. From Brazil to Japan, from Peru to Iran, let the heart of God’s children be stirred! Alleluia, alleluia, together with one voice. Alleluia, alleluia, all nations now rejoice! Praise him, praise him, all ye little children, God is love, God is love. From the African plain, through the Amazon rain, let God’s melody now be heard. From the Syrian land, to the Indian sand, let the hearts of God’s children be stirred! Alleluia, alleluia, together with one voice. Alleluia, alleluia, let all the earth sing with one voice!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE and Eli MorseTHE LORD’S PRAYER Amelia Friedman

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

GIVING OF OFFERINGS Kate Saxon

OFFERTORY Lord of the Dance arr. John RutterI danced in the morning when the world was begun, and I danced in the moon, and the stars and the sun, and I came down from heaven and I danced on the Earth; at Bethlehem I had my birth.

Refrain: Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said He.

The Prayers of the People were written by the 4th-5th grade classes.

6

I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn‘t follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with me, and the dance went on. Refrain

I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame. The holy people said it was a shame; They whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on a cross to die. Refrain

I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; It‘s hard to dance with the Devil on your back; They buried my body and they thought I‘d gone, but I am the dance and I still go on. Refrain

They cut me down, and I leapt up high, I am the life that‘ll never, never die; I’ll live in you if you’ll live in me: I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. Refrain

CONCLUDING VOLUNTARY Sigfrid Karg-Elert Praise the Lord with Drums and Cymbals

As our time of worship comes to an end, our time of service begins; we depart to be the church in the world.

John Rutter was born in London in 1945

and received his first musical education as a

chorister at Highgate School. He went on to

study music at Clare College, Cambridge,

where he wrote his first published compositions and

conducted his first recording while

still a student. His compositional career

has embraced both large and small-

scale choral works, orchestral and

instrumental pieces, a piano concerto and

two children’s operas. His accessible and

appealing sacred choral works are

performed by church choirs all over the

world and have become staples of the

repertoire.

This hymn tune, Slane, is an ancient Irish

ballad named for a hill near Tara Island. In the

fifth century, it was at Slane where the first

fires of Easter were lighted by St. Patrick.
