MASS TIMES

ST IGNATIUS Toowong: Weekdays 5.30pm every afternoon; Saturday 9.00am & 6.00pm (Vigil); Sunday 7.00am & 5.00pm.

Reconciliation: Saturday after 9.00am Mass and from 5.15pm to 5.45pm, or by appointment. HOLY SPIRIT Auchenflower: Weekdays 9.00am Monday, Wednesday & Friday; Sunday 8.30am

In certain European countries sheep are raised principally for their meat; in ancient Israel they were raised above all for wool and milk. For this reason they remained for many years in the company of the shepherd who knew the character of each one and

gave them affectionate names. Jesus knew shepherds and had much sympathy for their lot. To the hired hand, the sheep are merely a commodity, to be watched over only so they can provide a source of revenue. The sheep are far more than a responsibility to the good shepherd, who is also their owner. They are the object of the shepherd’s love and concern. For Jesus, the shepherd is the means to ensure the end: the well-being of the flock. Sheep are first, shepherds last. As we commemorate the World Day of Prayer for Vocations on this Good Shepherd Sunday, Jesus reminds us that there must be no exclusiveness on the part of the religious leader. Only love can draw the circle that includes everyone. Today we call to mind everyone over whom we are called to exercise authority: our children, elderly parents, co-workers and colleagues, parishioners, people who ask us for help throughout the week, people who depend on us for their material and spiritual needs. Whatever title we bear, the rod and staff we carry must be symbols not of oppression but of dedication and love. Thomas Rosica.

OUR MISSION PRAYER

We, the St Ignatius community, are called to live the good news. We pray that we become the people that Jesus Christ called us to be. We pray that we know the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit

through knowing Jesus in prayer, scripture and liturgy. We pray that we give hope to others by a practical, personal kindness, affirming each person's dignity, worth and destiny in Christ. May we live out this mission of our Christian vocation in the spirit of St. Ignatius.

In celebrating the Eucharist recently, I came to the lines in the Gospel of

the day from John Chapter 10: “I have come so that they may have life

and have it to the full.”

I was reminded of those words of historian Manning Clark in his auto-

biography, “The Quest for Grace”. He was refereeing to his school days at

Melbourne Grammar and those teachers who were ‘life‘life‘life‘life----enlargers’ enlargers’ enlargers’ enlargers’ and those

who were ‘lifelifelifelife----straitenersstraitenersstraitenersstraiteners’. In our drive to respect and treasure individual

difference, we want to be life-enlargers - people who nurture life in others,

expand their minds and hearts, abhor any form of pettiness, who live the

banquet of life with a passion and want to share it with others. One would

hope that the few life-straiteners in our very large community—who are

frequently the loudest and more often the people we need to hear least—

would find themselves singularly out of place in our parish.
