Last weekend I went to the New Melleray Abbey with 10 of our parishioners. I believe we all had a

good experience there. It was peaceful. It was spiritual. The weather was nice. We were praying with the

monks, eating good food and taking walks. As I mentioned in my columns a few times, the New Melleray

is one of my favorite places. It is a Trappist monastery. The Trappists came out of the Cistercian reform of

the Benedictine Order. The Benedictines are the oldest religious order in Western Christianity.

Many of you are not aware of this but since 2015 I have been involved with the Benedictines. In

2016, I became a Benedictine Oblate. I formally belong to the Benedictine Community and yet I am still a

diocesan priest. As a diocesan priest I try to live the Benedictine life of prayer and work and live the vows

of chastity, obedience, simplicity, stability and conversion. These are the principles of life that I try to

keep so that I can be more fully alive spiritually. However, I still struggle like many other people to live a

life of full integrity of spirit, mind and body.

During the retreat we were reading texts on resurrection and eternal life. I was able to meditate

together with the people on some concepts that I believe in but never explored spiritually and

theologically. So, it was a good time to be at the New Melleray to do this. Some of the questions we

discussed were: What is a resurrected body? What is Jesus' teaching on the relationship between spouses

after the resurrection? Etc.

Last week during the day, I also spent some time at St. John Cantius Parish and in the evenings I

was at the parish. For four days I was taking a workshop on the Latin Mass. I wanted to understand the

liturgical tradition before the 1970s and after. Since, this was the first workshop on the traditional Mass, I

started with the Low Mass. There is much beauty and tradition and meaningful ritual in this Mass. For

some time, I have been wondering why Blessed Paul VI did not just leave the Tridentine Mass as it was but

just add the possibilities of celebrating it in other languages. Some people say that in the 1960s we

moved from Theocentrism to anthropocentrism – moving from the focus on God to the focus on men.

I think that retreats are great moments to go back to God and to try to re‐center our lives on Him

and Him alone. In this week's Gospel we read: "Just as a branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it

remains on the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me. I am the vine, you are the branches.

Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing (J15:4‐5)."

Peace and goodness,

Rev. Michal Lewon

 Paz y bondad,

Monday, April 30, 2018 - Saint Pius V - d. 1572 This is the pope whose job it was to implement the historic Council of Trent. If we think popes had difficulties in implementing Vatican Council II, Pius V had even greater problems after Trent four centuries earlier. During his papacy (1566-1572), Pius V was faced with the almost overwhelming responsibility of getting a shattered and scattered Church back on its feet. The family of God had been shaken by corruption, by the Reformation, by the constant threat of Turkish invasion, and by the bloody bickering of the young nation-states. In 1545, a previous pope convened the Council of Trent in an attempt to deal with all these pressing problems. Off and on over 18 years, the Fathers of the Church discussed, condemned, af-firmed, and decided upon a course of action. The Council closed in 1563... Pius’s ceaseless papal quest for a renewal of the Church was grounded in his personal life as a Dominican fri-ar. He spent long hours with his God in prayer, fasted rigorously, deprived himself of many customary papal luxuries, and faithfully observed the spirit of the Dominican Rule that he had professed." Tuesday, May 1, 2018 - Saint Joseph the Worker "To capture the devotion to Saint Joseph within the Catholic liturgy, in 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph the patron of the universal Church. In 1955, Pope Pius XII added the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker. This silent saint, who was given the noble task of caring and watching over the Virgin Mary and Jesus, now cares for and watches over the Church and models for all the dignity of human work." Wednesday, May 2, 2018 - Saint Athanasius - d. 373 Athanasius led a tumultuous but dedicated life of service to the Church. He was the great champion of the faith against the widespread heresy of Arianism, the teaching by Arius that Jesus was not truly divine. The vigor of his writings earned him the title of doctor of the Church. Born of a Christian family in Alexandria, Egypt, and given a classical education, Athanasius became secretary to Alexander, the bishop of Alexandria, entered the priesthood and was eventually named bishop himself. His predecessor, Alexander, had been an out-spoken critic of a new movement growing in the East—Arianism... Five times Athanasius was exiled for his defense of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity. During one period of his life, he enjoyed 10 years of relative peace—reading, writing, and promoting the Christian life along the lines of the monastic ideal to which he was greatly devoted. His dogmatic and historical writings are almost all polemic, directed against every aspect of Arianism." Thursday, May 3, 2018 - Saints Philip and James "As in the case of the other apostles, we see in James and Philip human men who became foundation stones of the Church, and we are reminded again that holiness and its consequent apostolate are entirely the gift of God, not a matter of human achieving. All power is God’s power, even the power of human freedom to accept his gifts. “You will be clothed with power from on high,” Jesus told Philip and the others. Their first commission had been to expel un-clean spirits, heal diseases, announce the kingdom. They learned, gradually, that these exter-nals were sacraments of an even greater miracle inside their persons—the divine power to love like God." Friday, May 4 - Blessed Michael Giedroyc d. 1485 "A life of physical pain and mental torment didn’t prevent Michael Giedroyc from achieving holiness. Born near Vilnius, Lithuania, Michael suffered from physical and permanent handi-caps from birth. He was a dwarf who had the use of only one foot. Because of his delicate physical condition, his formal education was frequently interrupted. But over time, Michael showed special skills at metalwork. Working with bronze and silver, he created sacred ves-sels, including chalices. He traveled to Kraków, Poland, where he joined the Augustinians. He received permission to live the life of a hermit in a cell adjoining the monastery. There Mi-chael spent his days in prayer, fasted and abstained from all meat and lived to an old age. Though he knew the meaning of suffering throughout his years, his rich spiritual life brought him consolation. Michael’s long life ended in 1485 in Kraków." Taken from: franciscanmedia.org

A Prayer For “Renew My Church” Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church. Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to imagine our fu-ture boldly, to discern your direction wisely, to perse-vere in your holy will courageously, to stay together in charity, to surrender our own plans readily, to em-brace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations. May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace. We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

It was designed specifically for Catholic churches and schools in the Chicago area, and many other par-ishes in our Diocese have already found success with

it. The site allows you to make a one time or auto-matically repeating payments on a schedule that

works best for you, using any credit card, debit card or electronic bank account.

We believe that having a flexible online giving option will make it easier for many of you

to support St. Colette. Visit our website at www.stcolette.org and click on

the “GiveCentral” link or go to www.GiveCentral.org

and take a couple minutes to set up your donations. Questions? Please call the Parish Office

at 847-394-8100.
