Dear Friends,

I hope you’ll pardon my excitement. Each year I get more and more excited to enter into the Passion of the Lord on Holy Week. Perhaps it’s because each year I become more and more aware of our need for that which we commemorate this week. Starting today, Palm Sunday, we enter with

Jesus into the most prayerful, most meaningful, most exciting time of the year. This week helps everything in our Christian lives make a little more sense. I cannot stress to you enough how important it is for Catholics to truly enter into the events of this week. April 9 - April 16 has the potential of changing us forever.

On Tuesday, Cardinal Cupich will gather with the priests and people of the Archdiocese for the Chrism Mass at Holy Name Cathedral. At the Chrism Mass, the priests of the Archdiocese will renew the promises they made at Ordination. Additionally, the Cardinal will bless and consecrate the three oils that will be used in all of the churches of Cook and Lake Counties for the next year. The oils, Oil of the Catechumenate (used in Baptism), Oil of the Infirm (used in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick), and the Sacred Chrism (used in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders), is to be brought back to the local churches and presented to the people on Holy Thursday.

Lent officially ends and the Sacred Triduum begins at sundown on Holy Thursday with the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper. We commemorate the institution of the Holy Eucharist and receive the Mandatum, Christ’s command to serve. This is played out in the washing of the feet. The Teacher and Master humbly washes the feet of his disciples. From this we learn to humbly serve. After receiving Holy Communion on Holy Thursday night, there’s no dismissal. The liturgy will be continued on Friday. I encourage you to take part in the visitation of the seven churches or in the prayerful adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in our own church.

On Friday, Good Friday, we continue our three-day

liturgy with the reading of the Passion, the prayers for the Church and the world, the veneration of the Holy Cross, and the reception of Holy Communion. It is the only day of the year when it is forbidden to celebrate Mass. It is also a fast day. The Eucharist we receive is that which is consecrated on Holy Thursday. We’ll leave in silence, patiently, hopefully waiting for the celebration of the Resurrection.

On Holy Saturday, we will gather outside, around the new fire. We’ll bless the fire and the Paschal Candle that will carry its light into our darkened church. We’ll listen to a number of readings that chronicle salvation history, sing many psalms, proclaim the Gospel of the Resurrection, baptize new Christians, renew our own Baptismal promises, welcome new members into full communion, and celebrate their Confirmation. We’ll pray with them as they receive Holy Communion for the very first time. After the Three-day liturgy, we will join the neophytes for a reception in the church hall. On Easter day we will continue the celebration of new life, Christ’s and ours!

Let’s not just live as if it’s just another week. These days define who we are as Catholic Christians; they give us a purpose, and promise us that we can live forever. So often I hear of families traveling or being too busy to commit to the hours required to truly experience the Triduum. I guarantee you that if you invest your time into truly entering into the mysteries Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday unveil, you will not be disappointed. The Passover of the Lord, the Paschal Mystery is upon us. Will you make this week holy? Please, do. And bring your friends! Let’s fill the Church this week.

HOLY THURSDAY ADORATION

The expositions of the Blessed Sacrament will take place on Holy Thursday, April 13, after the 7:30 p.m. Mass until midnight. By doing this we fulfill the command of Our Lord to keep watch with him on the eve of his passion. Please consider committing some time to pray with our community in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament before Good Friday.

All Masses on the weekend of April 22/23 will be Anointing Masses. Those who are in need of healing for any illness of body or mind are invited to attend, join the community in prayer, and be anointed in this special ritual.

Queridos Amigos,Espero que disculpen mi emoción. Cada año me emociono cada vez más al entrar en la Pasión del Señor en la Semana Santa. Quizás es porque cada año me vuelvo cada vez más consciente de nuestra necesidad de lo que conmemoramos esta semana. A partir de hoy, el Domingo de Ramos, entramos con Jesús

en el momento más devoto, más significativo y emocionante del año. Esta semana ayuda a que todo en nuestra vida cristiana tenga un poco más de sentido. No puedo insistir lo suficiente en lo importante que es para los católicos entrar verdaderamente en los acontecimientos de esta semana. La semana del 9 al 16 de abril tiene el potencial de cambiarnos para siempre.El martes, el Cardenal Cupich se reunirá con los sacerdotes y personas de la Arquidiócesis para la Misa Crismal en la Catedral de Santo Nombre. En la Misa Crismal, los sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis renovarán las promesas que hicieron en la Ordenación. Además, el Cardenal bendecirá y consagrará los tres aceites que serán utilizados en todas las Iglesias de los condados Cook y Lake para el próximo año. Los aceites, el Aceite del Catecumenado (usado en el Bautismo), el Aceite del Enfermo (usado en el Sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos) y el Crisma Sagrado (usado en los Sacramentos del Bautismo, Confirmación y Ordenes Sagradas) son llevados a las Iglesias locales y presentados a la gente el Jueves Santo.Oficialmente la Cuaresma termina y el Triduo Sagrado comienza al atardecer el Jueves Santo con la Misa vespertina de la Cena del Señor. El Jueves Santo, tendremos nuevamente la Exposición del Santísimo Sacramento después de la Misa de 7:30 pm hasta la medianoche. The St. John Berchmans Easter Egg Hunt will take place on Easter Sunday immediately following the 9:45 and 11:30 am Masses. Come out after Mass and join us in the courtyard. Parents, please be mindful that many small children participate in this event. This is a perfect opportunity to share a lesson in

Christian charity with your children by asking the older ones to help the little ones.

This way it will be enjoyable for all.

encouraged on Holy Saturday) by all Catholics who are between the ages of 18 and 59 years of age.

Fasting means you may take only one full meal – two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to

maintain strength, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted.
