A Brief History of CAMM

April Church Calendar

By my count, there are 22 separate

worship services scheduled for the

month of April. Lent, Holy Week,

Examination and Confirmation all stack

up in this month. The number of support

hours for worship mounts up quickly if

you include secretarial hours, volunteer

bulletin assemblers, sextons, ushers,

communion set up crews, church

cleaning, Livestreaming, and all the

organists, directors, choir members and

musicians preparing to participate in a

number of special services. Pastors

aren’t the only ones with busy schedule

this time of year. Thanks in advance for

all the work so many members devote to

our worship services.

These tone of these 22 worship

services ranges from the somber

reflection of Lent to the joy of hearing the

new confirmands confess their faith in

the Lord Jesus; from the darkness of

Good Friday to the brilliant light of Easter

Dawn. In a very genuine way, these

services are an expression of our daily

walk with the Savior.

While St. Paul rightly encourages us to

“rejoice in the Lord always,” the

corresponding reality is that “we must go

through many hardships to enter the

kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22) Jesus put

it this way: “In this world you will have

trouble. But take heart! I have overcome

the world” (John 16:33).

Sorrow over sin (contrition) is vital for

true spiritual health. St. John said, “If we

claim we have not sinned, we make him

[God] out to be a liar, and his word has

no place in our lives” (1 John 1:10).

However, I can’t imagine worshipping in

a setting that was continually dominated

by the dark, somber mood of Good

Friday. After confession comes

absolution. After the dark and death of

Good Friday comes Easter light and life!

We are lifted up from dust and ashes by

a living and victorious Savior, Jesus

Christ!

Conversely, I cannot imagine

worshipping in a setting where week

after week moods are artificially

manipulated by the rhythms of upbeat

music and a motivational speaker more

intent on outlining methods for victorious

living than sharing the good news of

Christ crucified for sinners like me.

There are times in my life when I don’t

feel like laughing and dancing with joy.

Sometimes I need to reflect and repent.

There is a time for tears. Even Jesus

cried (John 11:35).

I thank God for the variety of worship

services we have during the month of

April, and throughout the year. Our

musicians and choir members work hard

to provide a rich offering of worship

music appropriate for praise, reflection

and proclamation. I pray that all of you

(and some of your invited friends and

relatives) will join your pastors and fellow

members of David’s Star as we repent

and rejoice in our crucified and risen

Savior.

What a blessing it is when we

encourage each other in our walk with

Jesus through public worship! See you

in church!

The Ladies' Aid is inviting you to come along and

see the play, “Wonderful Town” at Falls Patio

Players in Menomonee Falls on Sunday, May 5

at 2:00pm. No wheelchair tickets are available.

This play is about 2 sisters on a road trip from

Ohio to New York City, full of show tunes, and

captures the thrill of chasing one’s dreams like no

other musical. If you are interested in attending,

please contact, Joan Brandt, 262-993-4186. We

will meet at David's Star by the gym entrance at

1:00pm to carpool to the play. Deadline for tickets

five helpers to come to David’s Star kitchen at

5:30 AM on Easter morning,

April 21, to help make

scrambled eggs. No

experience is necessary. We

will provide on-the-job training.

We also need a clean-up crew

of five to replace the egg

scramblers at 7:45 AM. In

addition, we are looking for six

large Nescos and four electric

griddles. We would like to

showcase our David’s Star

breakfast bakery again this

year. Please consider making

a pan of cinnamon rolls,

kuchen, or other tasty treat.

We are also in need of four volunteers to make

cheesy potato casserole at your home and bring

it to church Sunday morning. The recipe and

food stuffs will be provided. Please contact Steve

or Kathy Bintz at 262-677-0810 if you are able to

help in one of these areas. Your help is greatly

appreciated with this fellowship gathering!

throughout the church has been met! Thank you

for participating!

Pastors’ Report (Pastor Woldt) Preparations are being made for confirmation again this year (April 14th.) 13 students

from our school’s 8th grade together with 2 students attending public schools will be confirmed. Please keep these young

people in your prayers as they make a public confession of their faith and prepare to receive the Lord’s Supper. We pray

that our midweek Lenten services will continue with improved attendance. The time change to 6:30pm for the later service

seems to be working better for some families. The shut in visit list has been increasing during the winter months for a

variety of reasons. We strive to visit all our shut in’s on a monthly basis. Livestreaming our weekend services is proving to

be a blessing to more and more people as access to the internet is now present in most households.

Board for Buildings and Grounds (Glenn Miller) Going to paint the walls of the gymnasium. Church signs will be in-

stalled once ground thaws. Woods thinning will be progressing.

attend Brewers Game July 12th. Discussed hymnals for nominal purchase fee. Ironman conference coming up. Several

members are attending.

Evangelism Committee (Andrew Loescher) Post cards underway. Looking towards morning Bible camp. Working on

social media. Board of Education looking for handout brochure for school and/or church to place by playground and front

of church.

Stewardship Committee (David Zarling) Removing 175th Anniversary envelopes

Koeller.

New Business

• Possible expansion of the mother’s room in church. Fine with one family, tight with more than one family.

• 2019 Church Year main focus for each area to accomplish beyond current agendas. Share with the Council.

• Place pews in for confirmation.

• Consistency for communion for both services? Would need to investigate and make announcements. D. Bohla to

Operating Budget Update

The remittances in February for the WELS mission were 16% higher than budgeted for, while the KMLHS operating

mission remittances were 11% higher than budget. The KML Joyful Noise remittances were 20% higher than the amount

budgeted for. The total amount remitted for all missions was about 17% higher than the amount budgeted for February

and is 0.8% higher for the year to date.

The mortgage loan balance at the end of February is $908,976. The council’s objective is to maintain a $100,000 cushion

in the building fund debt account—our balance at 2/28/19 was $92,095. This balance is down about 3.4% from last

month.

A BRIEF HISTORY…

ZAMBIA

In 1961, after several years of preparatory work, WELS began its Medical Mission on the Sala Reserve near Lumano

in Zambia. A permanent dispensary was built and opened in November, 1961. The Lumano Dispensary was later

renamed "The Mwembezhi Lutheran Dispensary" to better exemplify the Christian aspect of the mission. Mzembezhi

means Shepherd. It is known as the Lutheran Mission Rural Health Center to differentiate it from a nearby clinic with

Mwembezhi in its name. By 1963, 3,000 to 4,000 people were treated at the clinic each month. Special antenatal clinics

started in 1965 and an under-fives clinic began in 1968. Break-ins at the nurses' and the missionaries' houses led to

reevaluation of the work. To increase personal safety, night call was dropped and the nurses stopped delivering babies

at the clinic. We refocused attention on the original primary health care goals of teaching and making village visits.

MALAWI

The extension of our mission into Malawi was the direct result of Lutheran Church of Central Africa (LCCA) members

who moved from Zambia to Malawi. The government welcomed our gospel work in Malawi and they asked what we

could do to help the people of Malawi with their physical needs. As a result, our medical program was begun in Malawi

in 1970 with a mobile health care unit. The nurses travel to five designated bush areas to set up a clinic for the day and

then return to their home in Lilongwe by night. Permanent structures built to serve as clinics during the week are used

as churches on Sunday.

CLINIC WORK

Special classes were initiated by the staff to train Community Health Workers. Upon completion of the classes these

volunteer workers share their knowledge and skill within their villages. Workers teach positive health practices, take

care of simple health problems, and help with village immunizations. The existing infra-structure will meet the health

needs of the community long after the expatriate presence is gone. Our staff readjusted the goals when the AIDS

epidemic reached crisis proportion in Central Africa. We provide Christian counseling along with HIV testing at the

Mwembezhi Clinic. HIV positive patients are treated with special medications provided by the national government.

The National Staff

Malawi: There are 7 nurses, 1 nutritional coordinator, a registrar and a driver.

Zambia: There is one clinical officer, 2 nurses, 1 counselor, 1 lab tech and 1 receptionist in clinic. We also employ 2

outside maintenance men for the property.

FINANCIAL AND ADMINISTRATION

The Central Africa Medical Mission is a non-budgeted mission of the WELS; no money is received from the regular

synodical budget. The responsibility and support of the Central Africa Mediical Mission was given to the women's

groups of the WELS. Contributions are also received from Christian day schools and high schools, Sunday schools,

some circuits of the LWMS and other friends of the medical mission. The Central Africa Medical Mission reaches the

heart of many WELS members and beyond. Our Central Africa Medical Mission supplies and supports the American

personnel as supervisory staff, erects and maintains dispensary buildings, and purchases necessary medical supplies.

Our clinics are links in the extensive chain of clinics and dispensaries regulated or operated by the national

governments. Our clinics are required to meet the regulations of the national health departments. A small amount of

financial support is received from each government.

The Central Africa Medical Mission is administered stateside by the Central Africa Medical Mission Committee

(CAMMC), with input from Medical Mission Councils in Malawi and Zambia. The CAMMC members are volunteers and

are appointed by the Administrative Committee for Africa, a part of the Board for World Missions of the WELS.

The committee consists of a chairwoman, treasurer, secretary, nurse coordinator, nurse advisor, contact women

coordinator, and a public relations coordinator. The committee also has a medical advisor and pastoral advisor.

The women's organizations in the congregations are informed through a synod-wide system of contact women. It is

through these contact women that the project work for CAMM is done.

With God's help, hundreds of thousands of patients have been aided and countless lives saved through the work of

the Central Africa Medical Mission. Many adults and children have been baptized. The medical mission personnel have

often been tested to their limits. but all agree that God sustained them and through His Word helped them grow in faith.
