We began our winter program with an outstanding and insightful program on foreign policy in an election year with The Atlantic Editor at Large and Editor of Atlantic Live Steve Clemons, and kept on getting better from there! This month, we welcome Dr. Sannia Abdullah, who will speak to us about India, Pakistan, and Nuclear Weapons. On May 5, we will hear Joanne Cummings speak about her recent travel to Jordan, and the increasingly complex issues in the area. In launching our first newsletter, our hope to is keep you up to date about the many valuable programs going on in our council, to let our community know about the great things the Colorado Springs World Affairs Council has to offer, and to keep our readers informed about important issues and ideas that concern those interested in global affairs. Just a reminder about our Council policy on registrations and event cancellations: Registrations for programs generally close three days prior to a program. This is so that we can make sure that we best serve you for space and refreshments by providing an accurate number to our event venue. Similarly, if you have reserved space but failed to cancel within that same threeday period, we regret that we cannot issue refunds, as we have incurred nonrefundable event costs that we are liable for. High School Education

Commitment to YouthOur council has made the education of our localhigh school students on global affairs one of ourtop priorities in fulfilling our mission.  We areuniquely qualified to provide the education sogreatly needed by our youth.

Why do today's youth face very differentchallenges than those faced by students just afew years ago?  Major changes in the world ourchildren live in include a global workplace,technological advances leading to global workteams where knowledge of language and culturewill be essential, as well as Issues that areendemic to all human beings, such asenvironmental degradation, disease, and energyand water issues.  Demographic changes indiversity that continue to develop in the UnitedStates are a mirror in diversity to the rest of theworld.  Successful citizens will need to beknowledgeable about the world around them,and be able to communicate in languages otherthan English.  Here's what's new in our highschool education outreach:

Listening SessionAre you a high school educator interested ineducational opportunities about global affairs foryour students?  CSWAC will be hosting alistening session and information meeting in thenear future.  Our goal is to hear from you how

we can provide the best possible education

professor of psychiatricnursing for 25 years andretired in 2000. I continuedto work in the field ofpsychiatric nursing, as apartner with RockyMountain NeuropsychiatricAssociate, until I retiredfour years ago.

You've been travelingrecently.  What's themost interesting placeyou've been to in thepast year?We travel extensively butour trip to China last yearwas the most differentfrom any of our othertrips.  Exploring theculture and history ofChina was fascinatingfrom anything we hadexperienced before. Tohike the Great Wall wasan experience that willstay with us forever.

What might someone besurprised to know aboutyou?I am the dare devil in thefamily. Para sailing,climbing old temples andgreat walls. Joe stays onthe ground. He says"someone has to take thepictures.

Knowledge about globalaffairs among manyAmerican citizensdoesn't always seem tobe as strong as in othercountries. Why do youthink that is?I don't think there is anyone or easy answer towhy Americans seem toknow so little about globalaffairs. I think as a nationwe are ego centered. As anation we have heard foryears about how we arethe best. the wealthiest,the smartest, the biggest.This has had an effect onour national psyche. I alsobelieve that when manyAmerican have to work 23 jobs to make a living totake care of their familythere is little time left tothink about the rest of theworld.
